Include og:title, og:description and og:url too. This makes the page eligible for a WhatsApp preview, but cannot guarantee that every link will display one.
Add Open Graph tags to the page
Put the tags in the initial HTML document’s <head>, not only in visible page content or in metadata added after the page loads. Use page-specific values and the canonical page URL for og:url.

</head>Replace the example text and URLs with information for the page being shared. Keep og:url canonical and undecorated: the WhatsApp-attributed guidance says not to include session variables, user-identifying parameters or counters. The metadata should be present in the first 300 KB of the HTML response; the whole document does not need to fit in that limit. These limits are described in ChatArchitect’s reproduction of WhatsApp developer guidance, attributed there to Meta and marked updated 2025-11-05.
Prepare an image WhatsApp can fetch
- Use an absolute URL, such as
https://example.com/images/share-image.jpg, rather than a relative path. - Keep the image publicly accessible without a sign-in.
- According to the cited WhatsApp-attributed guidance, the image must be under 600 KB, at least 300 pixels wide and no wider than a 4:1 width-to-height ratio.
- Make sure the page itself is also publicly accessible. A private or gated page or image may not be available for preview generation.
Publish and check the preview
- Save the metadata in the page’s template, CMS fields or HTML source, depending on how the site is built.
- Publish the page, then paste its exact full URL into a WhatsApp message composer.
- Inspect the generated preview before sending. If you update the image or metadata, test the published URL again; available sources do not establish a cache duration or an official cache-reset procedure.
A site built with a CMS or website builder can use its page-level social sharing fields if they output these values in the initial HTML head. With direct HTML or server templates, add the tags to the page template and populate them with that page’s title, description, canonical URL and image. Either route must result in the same publicly fetchable tags and image.

- No preview appears at all: Inspect the page’s returned HTML and confirm all four Open Graph values are nonempty and in the initial head, early enough in the response.
- The preview has no image or the wrong one: Check that
og:imageis an absolute URL and that the image is public, under 600 KB, at least 300 pixels wide and within the 4:1 ratio limit cited above. - The page or image needs a login: Make both available publicly so WhatsApp can retrieve them.
- You see no preview for links you send, though the metadata looks right: Check WhatsApp’s Settings > Privacy > Advanced and turn off Disable link previews. WhatsApp Help Center says this setting prevents previews for links sent by that account; it does not affect previews received from other people. See WhatsApp Help Center.
If the URL and metadata pass these checks, a preview still is not guaranteed. The cited material does not document a definite cache-clearing workaround, so do not rely on a particular waiting period or reset procedure.
