If precise tapping or pressing is difficult, start with the phone’s built-in authentication and accessibility options: use fingerprint or face recognition if your model supports it, adjust how the touchscreen responds, or use an alternate input such as voice or a switch where supported. These options do not all unlock the phone; some help only after authentication. Check your phone model and software version first, then choose the method that requires the least difficult movement.

Choose an option that matches the movement that is difficult

Option Movement or input Can it unlock the phone? Key consideration
Touch ID on supported iPhones Place a registered finger on the sensor Yes No press is needed, but the finger still has to reach the sensor. Apple’s Touch ID guide lists compatible models.
Face ID on supported iPhones Position the face for the camera Yes An accessibility setup option can help if the usual head movement is not possible; unlocking requires more consistency. Apple’s Face ID and attention settings guide covers setup.
Voice Access on Android Speak commands and PIN digits Yes, with a PIN when Voice Access is listening on the lock screen Speaking a PIN can expose it to people nearby. See Google’s Voice Access commands and troubleshooting guide.
Switch Access on Android Use a compatible switch or keyboard to select scanned items No; it provides alternate navigation, not an authentication bypass Setup and compatible connections vary by device. See Google’s setup guide and control guide.
Touch response settings Adjust taps, holds, swipes, or gestures No; they change how input is interpreted Useful when touch timing or accidental holds are the problem, but not a general substitute for entering a passcode.

On iPhone: reduce the effort needed to authenticate

Use Touch ID without pressing the sensor

If your iPhone has Touch ID, register a finger and enable the setting that allows authentication by resting it on the sensor rather than pressing. This removes a press movement, though it does not remove the need to position a finger accurately. Touch ID is available only on certain iPhone and iPad models. Follow Apple’s Touch ID instructions for your device.

Set up Face ID with Accessibility Options

Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and start Face ID setup. If you cannot complete the usual head movement, choose Accessibility Options during setup. Apple says this option still secures Face ID but requires more consistency when unlocking. The exact setup experience depends on your iPhone and iOS version; see Apple’s Face ID and attention settings guide.

On iPhone: make touch input easier after unlocking

Adjust Touch Accommodations

Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations. These settings change how the screen recognizes taps, swipes, and other gestures, which can help when touch timing or precision is difficult. Apple recommends setting your preferences before turning Touch Accommodations on, because it changes how touches are interpreted. Read Apple’s Touch Accommodations guide before adjusting it.

Details are in Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide.

Consider Assistive Access only for a simplified experience

Assistive Access simplifies the iPhone interface, but it is not a universal unlocking method. Apple says Face ID or Touch ID may be configured during setup depending on the model. On Android: use voice or an alternate input

Enter a PIN with Voice Access

When Voice Access is active and listening on the lock screen, Google documents using spoken commands to bring up the unlock controls and select PIN digits by their labels. The documented lock-screen method supports a PIN, not other password types. Speaking a PIN where other people can hear it creates a privacy risk. Activation and exact controls depend on the phone and its settings. Consult Google’s Voice Access commands and Voice Access troubleshooting.

Use Switch Access to select items without direct tapping

Switch Access scans and highlights items so they can be selected through an external switch or keyboard connected by USB or Bluetooth. Google also describes built-in buttons as an option intended for developers. It provides an alternate way to navigate; it does not change the phone’s authentication requirements. Setup may require another person’s help if the user cannot initially operate the touchscreen. Review Google’s Switch Access setup instructions and device control guide. If considering an adaptive switch for Android, check compatibility with the specific phone and connection before buying.

Try Camera Switches if a facial gesture is easier

Camera Switches, part of Android Switch Access, can use facial gestures to navigate. Google recommends securely mounting the phone and keeping the camera’s view of the face clear. Setup itself may require assistance. This is an input method, not a way around authentication. See Google’s Camera Switches instructions.

On Android: adjust when a touch becomes a hold

If the problem is accidental long presses rather than PIN accuracy, use Android’s Touch & hold delay accessibility setting and try Short, Medium, or Long. It changes how long a touch must last to count as a hold; it does not generally solve the need to tap precise PIN digits. Menu names and locations may differ by device. Google’s instructions are at Touch & hold delay.

Set up and test the method safely

  1. Identify the phone and software version. Check the device model and operating-system version so you can confirm whether the feature exists and find the matching menus.
  2. Choose the input that fits the person. Fingerprint or face authentication can address unlocking directly on supported devices. Voice Access can enter an Android PIN under its documented conditions. Touch adjustments and alternate navigation help with interaction but do not bypass authentication.
  3. Configure accessibility features while the phone is unlocked. Some options require navigating settings or completing setup on the touchscreen. Ask a trusted helper to assist if needed, while ensuring the phone owner controls their passcode and account credentials.
  4. Test more than once before relying on it. Confirm that the person can unlock the device in ordinary conditions and still knows the passcode required for fallback or settings changes.
  5. Check privacy and accessory compatibility. Avoid speaking a PIN where it can be overheard. For a switch or keyboard, verify compatibility with the exact phone and connection method before purchase.
