To make a quote post on Threads, open the original post’s actions and choose its quote-post option if it’s available. Add a specific explanation of what you’re responding to, keep the original post and its attribution attached, and link to the full source when the discussion depends on a longer article or document. Before publishing, check that readers can tell which words are yours and where the original came from.
How to make a quote post on Threads
- Open the original post’s actions. Find the post you want to discuss and open its actions menu. Choose the quote-post option if it appears. Meta confirms that Threads supports quote posts, but its feature announcement does not specify a current, universal tap sequence or exact button label; placement can vary by app version or rollout. Meta’s April 24, 2025 announcement also describes controls that let authors limit replies and quote posts to followers.
- Write a clear lead-in. Say what you agree with, dispute, or want to add. For example: “This misses an important detail…” or “For context, the announcement also says…”. A vague reaction can leave readers guessing which part of the original you mean.
- Keep the original attached. Check that the quote-post preview and attribution identify the intended post and account. Make your commentary visibly distinct from the original author’s words; don’t present a paraphrase or excerpt as the author’s complete point.
- Add the context a reader needs. If an excerpt could mislead without a date, speaker, event, or caveat, state that information in your own words. If your point depends on a longer external article or document, add a direct link to the full source in your post. Meta says Threads supports linking to full off-platform content in the main post; see Meta’s announcement about text attachments and longer perspectives.
- Review before publishing. Ask whether someone who has not seen the original can identify the claim being discussed, who made it, and where to read the complete source. If not, add the missing context before you post.
What to do if the quote option is missing
Check the actions and interaction controls on that specific post. Meta says authors can limit replies and quote posts to followers, and feature availability or interface placement may change. A missing option does not necessarily mean you are using Threads incorrectly; the author’s controls or the version available to your account may affect what you can do. Meta’s announcement describes the follower-only controls and notes that they build on Quote Controls introduced in November 2024.
Do not assume every viewer will always be able to see the original post. It may be unavailable to some people or become inaccessible later. When the context needs to last, include the essential facts in your commentary and link to the primary material where possible.
Choose the sharing method that fits your goal

Keep your interpretation separate from the original
A quote post combines your response with someone else’s post, but it does not make the two voices interchangeable. Identify the point you are addressing, preserve attribution, and label any added explanation as your own. If you quote or summarize only part of a longer source, avoid implying that the excerpt captures the whole argument.

Threads also supports sharing a post as a link to another platform, and Meta describes controls for who may mention or reply to a user in its Threads launch announcement. Those options serve different purposes from a quote post: choose the one that lets your audience follow the source and understand your commentary.
