To let people open a Google Drive folder from a link, set its General access to Anyone with the link. Choose Viewer for read-only access, save the change, and share the copied link. This does not automatically make the folder searchable on Google.
Make a folder accessible to anyone with its link
Google’s desktop and Android instructions use slightly different menus. Use the steps for the device you have:
On a computer
- Open Google Drive and select the folder.
- Choose Share.
- Under General access, change Restricted to Anyone with the link.
- Choose a role. Select Viewer if people should only open and read the folder’s contents.
- Choose the option to copy the link, then complete the sharing dialog to save the change.
- Share the copied link with the people who need access.

On Android
- In the Google Drive app, find the folder and open its More menu.
- Tap Manage access.
- Under General access, tap Change.
- Choose Anyone with the link, select a role, and save the change.
- Copy and share the folder link.
Google’s labels can vary by platform. Its Android folder-sharing instructions describe the app steps.

What “public” means in Google Drive
For most people asking how to make a folder public, Anyone with the link is the relevant setting: people who have the link can open the folder. Google Drive Help states, “If you allow access to anyone with the link, anyone can open the folder.” This setting does not mean Drive will list the folder in Google Search.
Google also describes a Public sharing option for files that allows anyone to search for and access them without signing in. That is different from Anyone with the link; enabling link access alone does not make a folder searchable. See Google’s file-sharing guidance.

Choose the right access role
The role determines what link holders can do. For a folder meant to distribute documents or other files, Viewer is usually the appropriate choice.
| Role | What it allows | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Viewer | Open and view items. | Share materials for reading or downloading without granting editing access. |
| Commenter | Comment on and suggest changes to items, but not change or share them with others. | Invite feedback without allowing people to edit the contents directly. |
| Editor | Open, edit, delete, or move files, and add files to the folder. | Use only when link holders need to manage the folder’s contents. |

Check the folder before sharing its link
Changing a folder’s access affects the files and subfolders inside it. Items can inherit permissions from a parent folder, and files added to the shared folder later can inherit its access too. A file with broader access granted directly to it may retain that access.
- Review the folder and its subfolders for anything you do not intend link holders to access.
- Use Viewer unless people genuinely need to edit or organize files.
- Keep sensitive items in a separate folder with more restrictive access, or use limited access where available.

If “Anyone with the link” is unavailable
A work or school account may be restricted from sharing outside its organization. Shared drives are for work or school accounts, and an administrator can limit link-sharing options. If you cannot select the setting, check the shared-drive rules or ask your organization’s Drive administrator whether external link sharing is allowed.
