To help a foldable phone last longer, keep the screen gap and hinge clear, fold it gently in the direction intended for your model, and follow the maker’s instructions for its inner-screen protector and cleaning. How do I protect a foldable phone screen and hinge?
Check between the screens before closing
Before folding the phone, check that nothing is caught between the two halves and that the hinge area is clear. A card, coin, key, or piece of grit can scratch or puncture the inner display, or keep the phone from closing properly. If you feel resistance, open the phone and check for an obstruction rather than forcing it shut. Samsung’s foldable-care guidance and Motorola’s hardware guidance both warn about objects or debris in the folding area.
Fold and unfold without force
Use the normal motion and folding direction specified for your exact model. Samsung says not to fold its cited devices backward or use excessive force. Avoid pressing hard on the inner screen or crease, and keep fingernails, pens, and other hard or sharp objects away from the display. A case designed for your exact model may offer useful protection, but check that it does not interfere with folding; case fit and hinge coverage differ, and a case cannot guarantee the screen or hinge will avoid damage.
Leave the factory inner-screen protector alone
On models supplied with a pre-installed inner-screen protector, treat that layer as part of the display system. Do not peel it off casually or apply a generic replacement. If it lifts or needs replacement, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider about the correct part and service for your model. Samsung directs owners to authorized service for protector replacement; its US guidance says damage caused by removal by the user or a non-authorized provider is not covered by the cited Standard Limited Warranty. How should I clean a foldable phone?
Keep grit and dust away from the hinge and the gap between the screens. Follow the cleaning instructions for your own model. Samsung advises gently wiping hinge dust with a soft, dry cloth. Motorola’s cited Razr guidance also recommends a soft, dry cloth and warns against rough materials and spraying cleaner directly on the screen. Can a foldable phone get wet or dusty?
Do not treat a water- or dust-resistance rating as permission to expose a foldable to dust, grit, or intentional immersion. Ratings and limits differ among models. Samsung’s US guidance distinguishes ratings by model and says its cited IP48 models are not advised for beach or pool use. Motorola’s Razr Fold page says the phone is not dustproof or waterproof, that resistance decreases with normal wear, and that dust can reduce hinge life and damage the display. Avoid salt water, pools, beaches, pressurized water, and charging while the device is wet; check the exact model’s instructions for its rating and limits. What happens if a foldable screen or hinge needs repair?
Do not assume accidental damage is covered by the standard warranty. Coverage, eligible plans, service options, and out-of-pocket costs depend on the model, country, warranty status, and repair category. Motorola’s US support says physical damage, including broken screens, is not covered by its standard warranty and identifies MotoCare Accident Protection Plan as a separate coverage option. Repair quotes can differ even for the same device depending on what is being replaced. As a US example, Samsung’s pricing page listed $589 for a Galaxy Z Fold7 inner-screen module replacement at the time of the cited research; the page lists a different price for “screen repair.” This is a model-specific, time-sensitive example, not a general foldable repair estimate.
