Choose the calendar’s format before choosing its gifts: the compartments set the size and type of items you can include. Then tailor the contents with a mix of small presents, personal notes and activities that suit the recipient. A simple envelope garland is quick to assemble; pouches or boxes offer more room and can be reused.
Choose a format that fits the gifts and the space
Compare the container’s capacity, how much construction it takes, where it will be displayed and whether you want to reuse it. Think, too, about whether the recipient will enjoy opening a parcel, reading a note or doing an activity.

For a first project, an envelope or pouch garland is a straightforward option. Choose boxes if the gifts need more room, or a door calendar if you want each compartment to provide a small reveal.
Plan the recipient’s calendar before building
Pick a theme and a manageable schedule
Start with the recipient’s interests, routines, favorite treats, shared memories and activities they can realistically do. Decide how many compartments the calendar will have: many tutorials use 24, while Hersheyland’s activity-card project uses 25. Choose a count that suits your plan rather than assuming every calendar must follow the same schedule.

Check compartment size before choosing gifts
Make or select the containers first, then measure or test what fits. Envelopes work well for notes and flat items; pouches and boxes can take bulkier small gifts. For an oversized present, leave a clue in its numbered compartment and hide the present elsewhere.
Make a hanging envelope or pouch calendar
Gather materials
For an envelope version, use envelopes or folded cardstock, number tags, marker, string or twine, clips or adhesive, and a sturdy board, frame or other support. For a pouch version, use small drawstring bags, numbered tags, hooks or hangers, and a sturdy display surface. Keep the support and fastenings appropriate for the weight you plan to hang.

Assemble, number and fill
- Choose the display support and decide how the envelopes or pouches will hang. Leave enough space between them so they do not crowd.
- Number each compartment with a tag, marker or decorative sticker. Put the numbers in date order for a predictable countdown; a search-style arrangement can work if the recipient will enjoy finding the next number.
- Plan contents to fit the compartments, mixing small gifts with notes or activity prompts. Use a clue for any larger gift that will not fit.
- Fill the compartments and hang them. Distribute heavier pouches along the support so the display stays balanced.
Make a paper-cone garland
A paper-cone calendar turns the containers themselves into a decorative display. Caran d’Ache’s project uses thick paper, scissors, pencil, paint or markers, a hole punch, glue, string, tape and optionally mini pegs.
- Roll and fold the paper into cones, then glue them into shape.
- Decorate the cones and number them.
- Punch holes, thread the string through and arrange the cones on the garland.
- Add the gifts, then close the cones.
Choose paper sturdy enough to hold its shape, and keep the gifts small enough for the finished cones.

Fill it with gifts that feel personal
A meaningful calendar does not need a purchased item for every day. Rotate among small presents, personal messages and activities to make the contents varied without making every compartment a shopping task.
- Personal words: a handwritten note, short poem, affirmation, joke or a memory you share.
- Activities: a realistic prompt for a shared outing, family activity or creative task. Choose something that fits the recipient’s schedule.
- Small items: a toy, puzzle, mini game, craft accessory, stationery, stickers or a coloring sheet.

Use craft tools safely
Paper calendars may involve scissors, glue and, for door designs, a craft knife or scalpel. English Heritage’s printable door calendar instructions say an adult should cut the doors. For an upcycled wood-supported design, Bostik advises that an adult handle cutting with scissors or a saw, use gloves and goggles if needed, and sand the wood ends to remove sharp edges.
