A 6,000mAh battery does not guarantee a set number of hours: screen use, apps, signal, workload, software, and battery condition all affect runtime. To stretch the charge you have, start by reducing screen use, check which apps are consuming power, and use battery-saving modes when their trade-offs are acceptable. The settings below vary by phone and operating system.
Why a 6,000mAh battery may not last as long as expected
The 6,000mAh figure describes battery capacity, not a promised screen-on time or number of hours between charges. Google notes that battery life depends on the device, while Apple points to the way software and hardware features are used. A demanding workload, weak signal, frequent screen use, or an older battery can all change the result. Neither capacity alone nor general support guidance can predict runtime for an unspecified phone.
What to change first for longer runtime
Reduce screen power use
Lower brightness to a comfortable level, enable adaptive or automatic brightness if it behaves well on your phone, and shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner. These are among Google’s recommended Android power-saving settings. On supported Galaxy phones, Samsung offers a 15-second timeout option and lists 30 seconds as the default; that is a setting choice, not a guaranteed runtime improvement. Google’s Android battery-saving guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy battery guidance cover these controls.
Find the actual drain before restricting apps
Open your phone’s built-in battery usage report and look for apps or activity using unusually high power, especially in the background. Restrict only activity you do not need; limiting an app can delay its updates or notifications.

- Samsung Galaxy: Use the battery and app usage details available in Settings; options vary by model. Samsung battery guidance
- iPhone: Review Battery settings for app activity, including background activity. Apple also identifies Background App Refresh as a setting you can adjust. Apple’s battery performance guidance
Use a battery-saving mode when its trade-offs make sense
Battery Saver, Samsung Power saving, and iPhone Low Power Mode can reduce background activity or disable or limit selected features. Depending on the phone, this may delay app updates or notifications, affect performance, or change network and visual behavior. Turn the mode on when extending runtime matters more than immediate background updates or some features, and check your manufacturer’s description for its exact effects. Android Battery Saver guidance, Samsung Power saving guidance, and Apple Low Power Mode guidance describe platform-specific behavior.
Cut back on demanding activities and unnecessary connections
Navigation, GPS, hotspot use, video or music streaming, camera use, and graphics-heavy games can consume substantial power. When conserving charge, reduce or pause those activities where practical. Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery than cellular networks and advises using a location with a strong signal. If there is no coverage, Airplane Mode can avoid searching for a signal, but you will not be able to make or receive calls while it is on. Google’s Android guidance and Apple’s battery guidance explain these factors.

Keep the phone cool
Avoid leaving the phone in hot surroundings, particularly while it is charging. Google warns that a hot battery drains faster even when the phone is not in use, and that heat-related drain can damage the battery. Keeping the device cool can therefore help both current runtime and long-term battery condition. Google Pixel battery care guidance
Runtime today and battery health over time are different goals
Charging limits and adaptive overnight charging are intended to help preserve battery health over time; they do not maximize the charge available at the start of a particular day. Google’s Pixel guidance offers an 80% limit on supported Pixel 6a and later devices and says to turn the limit off when you need longer battery life. Samsung’s Battery protection options vary by model. If you need the most charge for today, do not cap the battery at 80%. Pixel charging optimization guidance and Samsung battery protection guidance

Where to start on each phone
The controls are similar in purpose but not identical in name or availability. Use your phone maker’s instructions for exact menus, particularly if the steps below do not match your Settings app.

If the phone still drains quickly
Use the battery report to determine whether one app or activity stands out, then change that specific behavior before applying broad restrictions. If drain remains unusually high after reducing screen use and demanding activity, consider the device’s age and battery condition: capacity in mAh does not reveal how much usable capacity remains. Exact diagnosis requires the phone model, operating system, battery condition, and usage pattern; general settings advice cannot establish a model-specific fault.
