To keep a YouTube Live broadcast running while prerecorded videos change, keep one encoder connected to YouTube and switch the encoder’s media source or scene. A short fade can soften the picture change, but it cannot guarantee gapless video or audio. Rehearse the exact files and inspect the YouTube preview before going live.

What “seamless” switching can—and cannot—mean

YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder using a server URL and stream key. If that encoder stays connected and keeps sending output while its input changes, you can change videos without ending the broadcast at each boundary. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the connection and broadcast workflow, but does not document a native playlist-switching feature or promise gapless transitions. YouTube’s encoder guide

There are two separate things to test: the visible transition and the media handoff. A brief fade may hide a hard visual cut. It does not fix a delay while a file initializes, a mismatched frame rate, a silent gap, or a click at the audio boundary. Whether the sequence feels continuous depends on the files, encoder, and source timing.

Prepare the YouTube stream and playlist

  1. Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not expose it in screenshots or share it. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address. Manage live stream settings
  2. Prepare each item in the encoder. In OBS or another encoder, add each video as a media source, or create a scene for each item and place its media source in that scene. This is a practical workflow, not a YouTube-validated automated playlist recipe. Set up the sources and transitions before the event rather than building them during the broadcast.
  3. Check the files. For every item, verify duration, resolution, frame rate, audio track, and that playback starts and ends as expected. Match the encoder’s output canvas and frame rate to the intended 4K60 broadcast. Confirm that the next source is ready before the current one ends.
  4. Choose and rehearse the transition. Apply a short fade or other scene transition if you want to soften the visible change. Play the actual sequence through its boundaries and listen closely: a video transition alone cannot make audio gapless. Rehearse in an unlisted or private stream and inspect both picture and sound in YouTube’s preview.
  5. Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start sending the encoder output, wait for YouTube to show the preview, and confirm the correct video and audio before starting the public broadcast. Keep the encoder session running while you change scenes or media sources.
  6. End the event deliberately. End the broadcast in the Live Control Room and stop the encoder as appropriate for your workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. YouTube’s encoder guide

Set up the encoder for 4K at 60 fps

Choose 2160p (4K) at 60 fps only if the computer or hardware encoder and upload connection can sustain it. YouTube’s current encoder settings table gives these rates for 2160p60: YouTube’s live encoder settings

Ingestion codec YouTube’s listed 2160p60 bitrate guidance
H.264 35 Mbps recommended
AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps minimum to 40 Mbps maximum

These are YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations, not a guarantee that an internet connection with that upload rate will remain stable. Check stream health during rehearsal and leave enough upload headroom for a steady feed. Match the rate to the codec actually selected by the encoder; do not treat the H.264 recommendation as the AV1/H.265 range.

YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K. If you choose HLS ingestion, account for its higher latency: it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream like RTMP. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance also requires a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Choose a protocol your encoder supports and that fits your latency needs. HDR is optional

4K60 does not require HDR. YouTube’s HDR guidance describes an H.265/HEVC workflow and documents OBS HDR setup from version 30.1 with an HDR source and specific encoder and color settings. Use that workflow only if you have HDR content and have configured the full chain for it. Stream HDR video on YouTube

Preflight the full sequence

YouTube recommends configuring at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes ahead. Its checklist also calls for checking the preview, testing failover, verifying local archive integrity, and monitoring audio and video continuously. YouTube live streaming tips

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • Run the entire playlist, not just the first transition. Check every handoff for a black frame, delayed source start, frozen picture, silence, or audio click.
  • Confirm that scene changes do not stop or restart the encoder’s YouTube output.
  • Check the YouTube preview and stream health before going public, then keep monitoring the broadcast.
  • Test encoder failover and keep a fallback scene or slate ready. For prerecorded items, verify that the next file can start before the current one ends.
  • Confirm that you have rights to livestream every video and audio item. YouTube’s live-stream guidance warns creators to ensure trailers do not infringe rights; the same rights concern applies to playlist content. YouTube’s encoder guide

Troubleshoot black screens and audio gaps

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Black screen between videos The incoming source is not ready, or the scene change exposes an empty source. Rehearse the exact boundary, confirm the next file plays, and prepare a fallback scene. Start the next source before the outgoing one ends if your workflow allows.
Audio gap or click at a cut The audio tracks end and begin at different times, or the incoming source takes time to initialize. Listen to the boundary in a full rehearsal. Adjust the source timing or audio transition; a video fade alone will not correct an audio discontinuity.
Encoder disconnects when switching The workflow is stopping or restarting the encoder output instead of changing its input. Keep the YouTube output session active and switch the media source or scene inside the encoder. Recheck the YouTube preview.
Unstable 4K60 feed The encoder or upload connection cannot sustain the selected output settings. Check stream health and the selected codec’s YouTube bitrate guidance. Test the complete sequence and adjust settings to what the system can sustain.
Unexpected delay 4K does not offer YouTube’s low-latency option; HLS also has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. Review the selected ingestion protocol and latency expectations. For HLS, verify the rolling playlist follows YouTube’s limit of no more than five outstanding segments.
