What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For an OBS stream, turn on Automatic Reconnect under Settings > Advanced, then confirm OBS is still running and YouTube is receiving the feed. OBS can retry a dropped encoder connection; it cannot relaunch itself after a crash or guarantee that a YouTube broadcast that has ended will resume. A dependable 24/7 setup needs recovery for each part of the chain: encoder, internet connection, stream key and URL, and YouTube’s broadcast state.
What “restart” means—and what OBS can recover
A disconnect can refer to three different failures, and they need different fixes:
- OBS loses its connection to YouTube: OBS Automatic Reconnect can retry the outgoing feed while OBS remains open.
- OBS or the computer stops: OBS’s reconnect setting cannot reopen a closed application. You need a way to relaunch OBS and, if necessary, restart the computer.
- YouTube ends the broadcast: Reconnecting the encoder does not ensure that an ended YouTube event resumes. You may need to start a broadcast again or configure a new one.
Therefore, a reconnect message in OBS is not proof that YouTube has a usable live stream. Check both the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guide and live-stream settings guide describe the relevant ingest setup.
Enable OBS Automatic Reconnect
- Open the setting: In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Advanced and make sure Automatic Reconnect is enabled. OBS identifies reconnect as an Advanced setting in its overview guide.
- Set retry behavior for your connection: Adjust the retry count and retry delay based on the interruptions you need to withstand. OBS’s Output API reference documents retry behavior, including waits that increase between attempts to avoid overloading services. A finite retry configuration can run out during a long outage; do not assume the stream will keep retrying forever.
- Save and test: Apply the settings, start a test stream, and simulate a brief network interruption if practical. Check whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube resumes receiving the feed. A test should use representative audio and motion so you can see whether the actual content remains stable.
Check the encoder, YouTube ingest, and broadcast state
1. Make sure OBS is still running
If OBS has crashed, frozen, or been closed, Automatic Reconnect has no running application to do the retry. Check OBS’s status and logs to distinguish an application failure from an internet interruption. For unattended use, arrange a way to relaunch OBS after a crash or computer restart, and test that whole recovery path before relying on it.

2. Verify the stream key and URL
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and compare the current stream key and stream URL with the values configured in OBS. The key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If OBS reports a start error, follow YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and update the encoder with the current key from Live Control Room. Resetting or replacing a key is a troubleshooting step, not a routine response to every short disconnect.
3. Confirm YouTube is receiving a usable feed
Look at the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. If there is no preview, investigate OBS output, the local connection, and the ingest URL and key. If OBS says it is live but YouTube is not receiving the stream, treat those as separate states and diagnose the path between them. YouTube’s stream settings and encoder settings and stream-health guidance explain what to check.

4. Determine whether the YouTube broadcast ended
If the event has ended, sending video again may require a new start action or a newly configured broadcast. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not promise that every ended event automatically resumes when an encoder reconnects. Check the event state in Live Control Room rather than repeatedly changing OBS settings.
Make a local 24/7 setup more resilient
Recovery depends on the complete chain: OBS must be running, the network must carry the feed, the ingest settings must be correct, and YouTube must be in a state that can receive it. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, using representative content in preflight tests, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder settings guidance covers these checks.

If OBS must start streaming when it launches, its documented --startstreaming launch parameter can do that. It does not ensure that the computer has restarted, the network is available, credentials are valid, or the YouTube event is ready. See the OBS launch-parameters guide, then test the exact startup and recovery sequence on your system.
- Check upload stability and YouTube stream health during tests, not just whether OBS displays a live status.
- Test what happens after a short internet outage, an OBS restart, and a computer restart; these are distinct recovery cases.
- For wired troubleshooting, first check the existing connection and cable. Ethernet may help isolate a local wireless problem, but it is not a universal fix.
Or let it run in the cloud

Common recovery problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reconnects but the outage continues | The connection is still unavailable or the configured retry attempts have been exhausted. | Check internet and upload stability, OBS status and logs, and retry behavior. Test recovery after connectivity returns. |
| OBS has closed or crashed | Automatic Reconnect only works while OBS is running. | Relaunch OBS or configure and test a supervised startup path. Confirm the computer and network also recover. |
| OBS reports a start error or YouTube has no preview | Possible ingest, connection, stream URL, or key problem. | Compare OBS settings with Live Control Room. If YouTube reports an encoder start error, use its troubleshooting steps to copy the current key into the encoder. |
| OBS reports streaming, but the YouTube event is over | The broadcast may have ended rather than merely lost its encoder feed. | Check the event in Live Control Room and take the required start action or configure another broadcast; reconnection alone is not a universal resume mechanism. |
| The stream returns but quality or stability is poor | Upload capacity or connection stability may not support the feed reliably. | Test upload speed with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. |
