Private or unlisted: which should you choose?

Use Private when you need to restrict access to a defined invite list. Use Unlisted when the link itself is sufficient and you accept that it can be passed on. Neither setting is the same as a public stream.
YouTube documents these privacy behaviors for videos and live uploads in its video privacy settings and live stream settings.
Change the visibility of an existing stream or archive
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Content.
- Open the Live tab to find the live upload.
- Open the relevant stream or archive’s details, or use its visibility control.
- Under Visibility, select Private or Unlisted.
- Save the change.
YouTube’s guidance describes changing an archive’s privacy from the Live tab and changing live archive privacy on the Content page. The exact layout can vary as Studio changes; look for the video’s Visibility setting. See YouTube’s privacy-setting steps and guidance for managing live stream archives.

Set privacy when creating a stream
For a new encoder or mobile stream, choose the visibility in the stream’s details in Live Control Room before starting. Webcam creation also provides a privacy choice, but its setup flow is distinct: YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance covers encoder and mobile workflows, not webcam streaming. Use the relevant creation flow rather than assuming every stream type has identical controls. See YouTube’s live stream settings and webcam live-streaming instructions.
What happens to a 24/7 stream’s replay?
A private or unlisted visibility setting does not guarantee that YouTube will save a complete archive of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams that are less than 12 hours long; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Because a 24/7 broadcast runs beyond that threshold, do not rely on YouTube’s archive as a complete recording. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Can you change privacy while the stream is live?
YouTube’s published instructions do not clearly establish that every stream type can be switched between Private and Unlisted in place while actively live without interruption. For a new broadcast, set the intended visibility during setup. For an existing archive, use the documented Content or Live-tab visibility control once the upload is available.
