You can use videos stored in Google Drive for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but Drive is the file store—not the broadcaster. Make the files available to a playback source, such as an encoder running on your computer, then send that encoder’s feed to YouTube Live. YouTube’s documented workflow uses an encoder and a stream URL and key; it does not establish a direct Drive-to-YouTube streaming feature.
How the setup works
The workflow is Drive files → playback or playlist source → encoder → YouTube Live. The files must be accessible to whatever plays and sends them. With a local setup, that usually means downloading or syncing authorized files to the computer running the encoder. A cloud service is another possibility, but check that it can import or synchronize Drive files before relying on it.
YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time using a video feed and chat. In this setup, the encoder supplies the video feed; Google Drive supplies the source files.
Before you start
- Confirm live-stream eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until launch day. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Check file access and rights: Ensure you are authorized to use every video and audio track in the live broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed for the live content, including applicable music rights.
- Choose a playback method: For the local method below, download or sync the source files to the computer that will run the encoder. Organize them in the order you want to play them. A shared Drive link is not established as a reliable encoder ingest URL.
- Plan for continuity: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will become one complete archived video.
Set up a local 24/7 stream from Drive videos
- Make the files available locally. Download or sync the authorized Drive videos to the encoder computer. Keep the source files in a stable folder and prepare the intended playlist or sequence. Confirm that the computer can play each file before configuring the live stream.
- Enable live streaming on the channel. In YouTube Studio, complete the channel’s live-stream setup and allow time for first-time enablement, which YouTube says can take up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule a YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the broadcast and open its stream settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select the local prerecorded video or playlist as the playback source. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream destination settings. Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to its servers.
- Start sending and check the preview. Start the encoder, then check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. When the feed is ready, use the available go-live control in YouTube Studio as applicable. Keep the stream key private: it is used to send a feed to the configured stream.
- Operate for the intended duration. Keep the playback source, encoder computer, and internet connection running. For a broadcast expected to exceed 12 hours, plan how you will restart or continue the broadcast and manage the resulting archives rather than relying on one 24-hour archive.
YouTube’s encoder instructions cover creating or scheduling a stream, entering its server URL and key in an encoder, and checking the preview and go-live flow. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and its recommended encoder settings for the current platform guidance. Encoder controls vary by software, so use the encoder’s own instructions for selecting a file or playlist and configuring its output.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Having a file does not establish broadcast rights
Before streaming, confirm you have the rights to use the video and audio in a public live broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to warrant that it has the rights needed to exploit the live content, including relevant music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other rights holders. Google’s guidance on copyright basics can help explain copyright considerations, but it does not grant rights to a file stored in your Drive.
Technical permission and monetization eligibility are different
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. The platform says monetized material should be original and authentic, not mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. Reused content—material repurposed from YouTube or another online source without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value—can also affect monetization eligibility. YouTube treats reused-content review separately from copyright enforcement, so permission to use a video does not by itself assure monetization.

On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content was already ineligible under its existing policy. That clarification is not permission to loop material for monetization. For eligible YouTube Partner Program creators, live Watch Page ad and Premium revenue require acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module; enabling ads does not guarantee ads will serve, because content goes through standard review. Troubleshooting a stream that will not stay live
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and restrictions, then confirm that initial enablement has completed. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no feed: Confirm the encoder is running, the selected file or playlist is playing, and the server URL and stream key match the stream created in YouTube Studio. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube preview.
- The encoder cannot play a Drive file: Make the video available locally by downloading or syncing it, then select that local file in the encoder. Do not assume a Drive share link functions as a video ingest source.
- The broadcast stops when unattended: In a local setup, check that the computer is not sleeping, the encoder remains open, and the internet connection stays available. A local method depends on those components continuing to operate.
- The broadcast lasts longer than the expected archive: A stream over YouTube’s 12-hour automatic-archive threshold is not promised as one complete archive. Plan restarts and archive management in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stream directly from Google Drive to YouTube?
The documented YouTube encoder workflow does not establish a direct Drive-to-YouTube broadcast feature. Use an encoder with accessible source files or verify a cloud service’s Drive integration before depending on it.

Do I need a dedicated mini PC?
No. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes software or hardware encoders; an existing computer can run encoder software. A dedicated machine is an optional way to keep a local setup running, not a YouTube requirement.
