Google Drive is the library, not the broadcaster: YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a live audio-and-video feed, so your playback setup must be able to access and play the files. For continuous operation, either keep a local computer, network, and encoder running or use a hosted service that can play uploaded videos from the cloud.
What you need to set up
Plan for four separate parts: authorized video files, a way to play them in sequence, an encoder that sends the resulting feed to YouTube, and a YouTube broadcast for viewers to watch. A Google Drive folder alone does not create a live stream, and the standard YouTube encoder workflow does not ingest a Drive folder directly.
- A rights-cleared library: confirm that you may stream every video and soundtrack, including music. A copy in your Drive does not prove that you have streaming rights.
- Playback and encoding: choose either software running on a computer you keep available or a hosted service. Confirm how it accesses files, handles playlists and loops, and recovers if playback or the connection stops.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- A broadcast and encoder connection: create or schedule the viewer-facing event in YouTube Studio, then configure the encoder with the YouTube server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
1. Audit and prepare the Drive library
Check rights before building the playlist
Make a list of the videos and their audio, and record the rights status for each one. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the rights needed for worldwide use on Google services, including music licensing rights. If a rights holder licensed material for your channel, check whether they also need to allowlist your channel for live use in Content ID.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. A match can lead to a warning or replacement of the stream with a placeholder; continued use may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Do not treat a successful upload to Drive, a license for an ordinary video upload, or permission to possess a file as automatic permission to broadcast it live.

Make files accessible to the playback setup
Decide how the selected player or service will read the files. A local encoder may use files available on that computer; a hosted service needs a way to receive or access its playback files. Check access permissions and test a representative file before assembling a long playlist. If a file is renamed, moved, deleted, or made inaccessible, the player may not be able to continue; the exact behavior depends on the software or service you choose.
Keep a rights record and a separate playlist order. Test the end of a file, the transition to the next item, and what happens when the final item ends. Looping, scheduling, and recovery behavior are implementation-specific, so verify them in your chosen tool rather than assuming YouTube provides them.

2. Choose where the playback and encoder will run

In either arrangement, test the entire chain before announcing a permanent stream: file access, playlist order, looping, YouTube preview, and recovery after an interruption. YouTube’s general encoder instructions explain how to send a feed; they do not establish the file-access, playlist, uptime, or restart features of a particular player or provider.
3. Enable live streaming and create the YouTube broadcast
- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, start the live-stream setup for your channel and complete any verification or eligibility steps requested. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the current live-stream eligibility and account restrictions before scheduling; requirements can change.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s live controls, create or schedule the viewer-facing broadcast. Set its title, description, visibility, audience settings, and schedule as appropriate for the channel.
- Keep “broadcast” and “stream” distinct. The broadcast is the YouTube video or event viewers see; the stream is the incoming audio/video feed from the encoder. Reusing an encoder stream does not, by itself, make one broadcast last forever. YouTube’s API documentation describes broadcasts as distinct videos and allows a stream to be bound to up to three broadcasts.
- Copy the connection details from Live Control Room. Use the server or ingestion URL and stream key associated with the broadcast or stream you intend to use. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it on-screen, or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
4. Configure the encoder and confirm the feed
- Select YouTube in the encoder, if offered. Otherwise, use the encoder’s custom-server option and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Use the encoder’s YouTube workflow rather than substituting a different ingest protocol without confirming compatibility.
- Choose compatible video and audio settings. Match the output to the source files, your available upload connection, and the encoder’s supported YouTube settings. Use the current recommendations shown by YouTube and the selected encoder; the correct bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval depend on the intended output and are not one universal setting for every Drive library.
- Start playback and inspect the preview. Confirm that both picture and sound are present, the correct file is playing, and the stream health shown in Live Control Room is acceptable before making the broadcast public.
- Start the broadcast from the encoder workflow. After the encoder begins sending content, YouTube’s encoder guide says a watch page is created and the channel is live. Follow the Studio controls for the broadcast you created, and confirm the public-facing page behaves as intended.
- Test the loop and recovery path. Allow the playlist to reach a file boundary and, if practical, test a controlled interruption before depending on unattended operation. Confirm whether playback resumes, the encoder reconnects, and YouTube continues the intended broadcast. These behaviors are tool-specific.
YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion. Most creators should use the YouTube settings built into their encoder. HLS is intended for compatible encoders and has additional format and playlist constraints; YouTube Help notes that its latency is higher than RTMP. Do not switch protocols just because a player supports them—confirm the selected encoder’s YouTube compatibility and follow its configuration instructions.

5. Plan around archives, rights, and monetization
A continuous stream is not necessarily one complete replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. A stream running 24 hours or longer is outside that stated automatic-archive guarantee, so do not promise viewers that one uninterrupted all-day broadcast will be saved as a complete replay. If preserving replays matters, plan a schedule that ends and starts broadcasts in segments under 12 hours, and verify the archive after each one. Remember that each broadcast is a distinct viewer-facing video.
Permission does not guarantee monetization
Live streams are covered by YouTube channel monetization policies, including rules on reused and inauthentic content. YouTube describes reused content as material repurposed from YouTube or another online source without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Its policy is separate from copyright enforcement and can apply even when you have permission to use the material. Repetitive or mass-produced content is also covered by the inauthentic-content policy, renamed from repetitious content in a 2025 update. A playlist of authorized videos therefore does not, by itself, establish monetization eligibility.

6. Troubleshoot common failures
