To run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream with changing visuals, loop a prepared playlist through an encoder such as OBS, connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream URL and key, and keep the encoder, host computer, and network running. For a true continuous broadcast, plan for monitoring and recovery; a rotating image or playlist does not by itself resolve music rights, archive limits, or monetization eligibility.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility requirements.
  • Audio and visual material you own or are authorized to use in the intended territories, live broadcast, and any replay.
  • An encoder such as OBS, a computer capable of running it continuously, and a reliable internet connection.
  • A plan for monitoring the stream, recovering after interruptions, and handling replays if viewers need a complete archive.

Choose how the visuals and audio will rotate

Loop one prepared file

For the simplest setup, combine the audio and visual into one video file, then add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source and enable its loop setting. This is useful when the entire program should repeat in the same order. OBS documents Media Source looping and supported formats in its Media Sources guide.

Play a playlist

For a rotation of separate files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source. A playlist makes it easier to cycle through different tracks and visuals, but does not automatically create seamless transitions or authorize the material.

Use a local encoder or a cloud service

With a local setup, OBS runs on a computer that must stay powered, connected, and available. That gives you direct control over scenes and playlists, but power loss, computer sleep, software failure, or a home internet outage can stop the broadcast. A cloud service can keep an encoder running without a home computer; compare its YouTube workflow, playlist and visual controls, outage recovery, and costs before choosing one.

Set up the continuous stream in OBS and YouTube

  1. Prepare and verify the media. Test the full playlist locally. Confirm that the sound level is consistent, the visuals display correctly, and the intended loop order is right. Keep copies of the media and any licenses or permissions.
  2. Create an OBS scene. In OBS, create a scene, add either a Media Source for one file or a VLC Video source for a playlist, and enable Loop or Loop Playlist, as appropriate. OBS interface labels can change between versions; consult the current OBS source documentation if a control is not where expected.
  3. Set the stream output. Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the visuals and the connection you can sustain. Configure OBS output using YouTube’s current recommendations rather than guessing at a bitrate: YouTube’s encoder setup and live encoder settings provide the applicable guidance. A radio program with mostly still imagery may not need the same video data rate as fast-moving footage.
  4. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, and create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server information if the workflow requires it. Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  6. Preview before going live. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check both audio and video, then start the public broadcast in YouTube when the preview is correct. Monitor the public watch page as well as OBS.
  7. Keep the whole pipeline running. Prevent the computer from sleeping, keep OBS open, and maintain power and network access. YouTube advises using a reliable connection, leaving bandwidth margin, previewing, and checking stream quality over time; network disruption can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Make the broadcast safe to run and useful to replay

Clear rights before you stream

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the image with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even if a rightsholder has licensed music use, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID to avoid an automated interruption. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains the process, and its Terms of Service put responsibility for necessary rights, including music rights, on the provider.

Do not assume a loop qualifies for monetization

YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its policy update dated July 15, 2025 describes repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content” and says monetized videos, including live streams, should have materially varied substance and creative, educational, or other value. Rotating visuals alone are not proof of that value or a guarantee of YouTube Partner Program approval. Eligible live streams may offer ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, or memberships, but YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and live-stream monetization options.

Plan for the archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on an indefinitely running broadcast to produce one complete replay. If viewers need a replay, plan shorter scheduled broadcasts or another recording and publishing workflow, and verify current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on it. See YouTube’s encoder workflow and archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed Incorrect stream key or server information, an inactive stream setup, or an unavailable connection. Check the key and server details in Live Control Room against OBS Settings > Stream. Regenerate a key if it may have been exposed. Restart the encoder connection and wait for the preview.
The stream stops when unattended The host computer slept, lost power or internet, or OBS stopped running. Disable sleep for the streaming period, check power and network stability, and monitor OBS and the public watch page. If unattended local operation is too fragile, consider a cloud-hosted approach.
The playlist ends instead of repeating The wrong source type or loop control is selected, or a file is unavailable. For a single Media Source, enable its loop option. For a VLC Video playlist, enable Loop Playlist and confirm VLC is installed and every playlist item opens.
YouTube interrupts the broadcast or shows a placeholder Content ID detected third-party material, or a rightsholder’s allowlist requirements were not met. Review the live copyright notice in YouTube Studio. Resolve rights with the owner and request channel allowlisting when required; remove or replace material you cannot clear.
The live broadcast exists but the replay is incomplete or absent The stream ran for 12 hours or longer, or the archive workflow did not preserve the full broadcast. Use shorter broadcasts when an automatic archive matters, and check the archived video in Studio. Keep a separate recording if a full replay is essential.
