OBS can reconnect a supported stream output after a temporary disconnection, but it does not restart itself when the OBS process crashes—and neither OBS nor YouTube documents a guarantee that a VLC playlist will reopen at the exact track and timestamp. For a resilient 24/7 lofi stream, configure output reconnection, build a looping playlist, arrange for the operating system or a supervisor to relaunch OBS, and test what happens to both the YouTube broadcast and media position.

Understand what has failed

“Resume the stream” can mean three different things. Treating them separately matters because each needs a different recovery mechanism.

  • Encoder connection drops while OBS remains open: OBS automatic reconnect can retry an output that supports reconnection.
  • OBS exits or crashes: OBS cannot reconnect because the application is no longer running. A separate operating-system or process-supervision mechanism must restart it.
  • OBS restarts but the playlist starts in the wrong place: restarting the encoder is not the same as restoring the VLC source’s previous playlist item and timestamp. OBS documentation describes looping and playlist behavior, but does not promise crash checkpointing.

Plan and test these as separate outcomes: encoder recovery, application recovery, and media-position recovery.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect for dropped output

For a network interruption or other supported output disconnection where OBS stays open, enable automatic reconnect in OBS. OBS lists this under Settings > Advanced > Network > Automatically Reconnect; exact labels and available controls may vary by OBS release. The OBS output reference describes retry intervals that increase between attempts for outputs that support reconnection. This setting does not relaunch OBS after a crash.

  1. Open OBS and choose Settings.
  2. Open Advanced, then find the network or reconnect controls.
  3. Enable Automatically Reconnect and review the retry interval and maximum retries available in your installed version.
  4. Apply the settings and test by interrupting the network while leaving OBS running. Confirm whether the output reconnects and how the YouTube event behaves.

For OBS’s overview of reconnect and other settings, see OBS documentation. The behavior depends on the output and the installed release, so verify your own setup rather than assuming a particular retry duration.

Build a looping lofi playlist in OBS

OBS’s VLC Video source supports multiple media files and a looping playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear; a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. For a predictable lofi rotation, use a fixed file order and leave shuffle off.

  1. Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS (for example, 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS).
  2. In the scene that is actually streamed, choose Sources > + > VLC Video. If VLC Video is missing, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Add the media files in the order you want them played.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want the same rotation order each time.
  5. Set the source’s visibility behavior intentionally, then confirm the source is visible in the active streaming scene. A hidden source may not behave as you expect when the scene changes.
  6. Start a private or otherwise non-public test and watch the playlist pass from one file to the next, then loop.

These settings create a looping playlist; they do not establish that OBS saves the current item and playback timestamp on a process crash. The official source documentation describes playlist looping and visibility behavior, not crash recovery of playlist position. See OBS media sources documentation.

Restart OBS after the process exits

An external process supervisor or an operating-system scheduled task can be used to relaunch OBS if it terminates. This is an implementation approach, not a built-in OBS reconnect feature, and it does not by itself restore the last media position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a supervisor or scheduled restart

  • Configure the supervisor or scheduled task to start OBS with the intended profile and scene collection, rather than an unrelated default setup.
  • Use the startup options supported by your installed OBS version and operating system, and verify that OBS opens the expected streaming scene.
  • Decide whether a relaunch should automatically start streaming or only reopen OBS for review. Automatic streaming may send a signal to YouTube as soon as the encoder is ready, so test it privately first.
  • Prevent a restart loop from launching multiple OBS instances. Confirm that the old process has ended before the supervisor starts another one.
  • Test a deliberate OBS termination and confirm that the supervisor relaunches the application and that the intended output actually begins.

Because this is external to OBS, its exact setup depends on your operating system and supervisor. Do not treat successful application relaunch as proof that the YouTube broadcast continued or that the playlist resumed at its old position.

If resuming the exact track and timestamp matters

Use a playback arrangement that explicitly saves and restores its current item and time, or build a restart workflow that persists this state and returns it to the player. The reviewed OBS documentation does not establish a built-in checkpoint-and-restore option for a VLC playlist after an OBS process crash. If you do not add state persistence, accept that a restart may begin elsewhere in the playlist and test the actual behavior on your installed OBS/VLC combination.

Check YouTube’s stream settings and event after recovery

YouTube describes a stream key as the credential and address the encoder uses to send a feed: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. YouTube allows custom stream keys to be reused, and its auto-start and auto-stop controls can start or stop a stream when enabled. Those settings manage the encoder workflow; they do not restore playlist state or guarantee that the same broadcast remains available after a crash.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room for the stream and confirm which stream key is assigned to the encoder. Menu labels can vary; avoid exposing or sharing the key.
  2. If you use auto-start or auto-stop, check the relevant controls for that stream and understand that enabling them changes how encoder start and stop signals affect the event.
  3. After a controlled OBS restart, inspect YouTube Studio to see whether the event is receiving the encoder feed, ended, or needs a new event or action.
  4. Do not assume that a reusable key means YouTube will preserve the same event or broadcast for every failure duration. YouTube’s documentation does not specify a universal crash-recovery window.

See YouTube’s stream-key and encoder setup guidance for its explanation of keys and stream controls.

Run a controlled end-to-end recovery test

  1. Baseline: start the stream and note the YouTube event state, current playlist item, and approximate playback position.
  2. Network interruption: interrupt the connection while OBS remains open. Check whether automatic reconnect retries, whether the output returns, and what YouTube shows.
  3. Process crash: terminate OBS deliberately. Confirm that your external supervisor relaunches the correct profile and scene collection.
  4. Broadcast state: check YouTube Studio after OBS restarts. Record whether the original event is receiving video or whether a different action is required.
  5. Media state: note the first playlist item and timecode after restart. Repeat the test if you need confidence in a particular setup.
  6. Longer interruption: test a restart after a longer interval if your real failure scenario could last longer. Do not infer a universal YouTube recovery duration from a short test.

Compare the recovery approaches

Approach What it addresses Does OBS need to stay running? Same YouTube broadcast guaranteed? Same playlist position guaranteed?
OBS automatic reconnect Supported output disconnections Yes No; verify the event state No
External OBS restart OBS process termination No, but a supervisor must run No; verify the event state No
Playback-state persistence Restoring item and timestamp, if your player/workflow supports it Depends on implementation No; verify separately Only if the implementation saves and restores state; test it
StreamNeo cloud looping Running uploaded videos as a YouTube stream from the cloud No home OBS computer needs to stay on Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream, but same-event continuity is not stated Exact crash-position restoration is not stated

No approach in this comparison is documented as guaranteeing every requirement at once. Define whether your priority is returning the channel to air, preserving the same YouTube event, or continuing at the identical track and timecode.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want to avoid keeping an OBS computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. The stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of pooled storage per slot, 24/7 looping and playlists, and team support. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot regardless of quality.

The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Fix common recovery problems

  • OBS never reconnects after a network cut: confirm automatic reconnect is enabled, that the selected output supports it, and that the network has returned. Test with OBS still open; a process crash is a different failure.
  • OBS does not relaunch after a crash: automatic reconnect cannot restart the application. Check the external supervisor or scheduled task, its launch target, and whether it is configured for the correct user and OBS profile.
  • The VLC Video source is missing: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist starts at an unexpected file or time: looping does not mean checkpointing. If exact continuation is required, add a playback-state mechanism and test its saved item and timestamp.
  • The stream is back in OBS but not on the expected YouTube event: inspect YouTube Studio’s event state and auto-start/auto-stop settings. A reused stream key does not establish that the same event remains active.
  • The playlist order changes: turn off Shuffle Playlist and check the ordered file list.
  • The stream appears without the lofi video: confirm the VLC source is visible in the active streaming scene and that the intended scene collection loaded after restart.

Protect the channel’s content and live setup

Use music and visuals you have the rights to stream. A long-running broadcast is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules, and a playlist loop does not make third-party tracks permissible. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and your channel’s permissions before making a stream public; the stream-key documentation linked above covers encoder setup, not a blanket copyright clearance.
