Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can stream a recorded lecture with a still image in OBS by adding the lecture as a looping Media Source, placing the image in the scene, and sending OBS to YouTube Live with your stream URL and key. A 24/7 broadcast depends on the computer, power, and internet connection staying available; it is not an uptime guarantee, and YouTube does not promise a complete archive for a stream that long.
Prepare the lecture and still image
Before opening OBS, confirm that you have the right to stream the lecture and every asset it contains, including slides, music, video clips, and background images. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and educational use alone does not guarantee that a stream will be cleared.
- Keep the lecture video and image in an accessible folder on the computer that will run OBS.
- Choose a still image sized and composed for the output canvas. If it contains text, check that it remains legible at the intended resolution.
- Decide whether the image should fill the screen behind the lecture, appear alongside it, or remain visible only when the lecture video is not covering it.
Build the OBS scene and loop the lecture
Use Media Source for one lecture
- In OBS, create or select the scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add an Image source. Choose the still image file and position or resize it in the preview.
- Select + again and add a Media Source. Choose the lecture video file.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. Loop is off by default, so without this setting the source stops when playback reaches the end.
- Arrange the sources in the Sources panel. Sources higher in the list appear in front of sources below them. Put the image behind the video if it should serve as a background; put it in front only if you intend to obscure part of the lecture.
- Use the preview to adjust the image and video to the canvas. Confirm that the lecture is visible at the intended size and that the still appears in the intended areas.
Use VLC Video for a playlist
For several recordings, add a VLC Video source and select a playlist, then enable its Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed, and a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. Check the end of one recording and start of the next, as well as the playlist wraparound, to make sure the image and transitions look as intended.
OBS documents media looping and playlist controls, but not a dedicated 24/7 scheduler. If a source stops or the scene is changed, the broadcast will not automatically restore the intended lecture presentation just because looping is enabled.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube, or use the connection option available in your current OBS setup.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Start the OBS stream and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public.
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete that step well before a scheduled launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and current live-streaming eligibility information.
Choose output settings and test the stream
Use YouTube’s recommendations for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send; bitrate needs to fit the available upload connection. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists a 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 14 Mbps. These figures are YouTube-specific recommendations for that format, not universal OBS settings or guarantees of a stable stream.

- Use RTMPS where supported, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Do not set bitrate solely by the computer’s theoretical internet plan. Leave capacity for connection variation and other network use, and test the actual connection and encoder before launch.
- Run a test stream and inspect both the OBS connection indicators and YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. YouTube’s recommendations are on its live-streaming encoder settings page and live-streaming tips page.
What 24/7 means for power, connection, and archives
A continuous OBS broadcast requires the computer to keep running OBS and the media source, with working power and a sufficiently stable network connection. OBS’s dropped-frame indicator can reveal that the connection to the destination is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate; it does not diagnose every possible computer, encoder, or power problem.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat one 24-hour broadcast as a dependable way to obtain a complete lecture replay: the reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a full-archive guarantee for a stream longer than 12 hours. If a complete VOD matters, schedule shorter sessions and check YouTube’s current archive behavior before relying on it. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder and trigger a warning; unresolved third-party content can interrupt or terminate the stream. Claims may also be placed on an archived stream after it ends.
If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm permissions before going live.

Troubleshoot common OBS lecture-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The lecture stops at the end of the file | Media Source Loop is off, or the source is not the one playing the lecture. | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For VLC Video, check Loop Playlist. |
| The still image is hidden | The source order places the video over the image, or the image is not fitted to the canvas. | Reorder sources in the Sources panel and resize or reposition the image in the preview. |
| The playlist does not play | VLC may not be installed, the OBS/VLC bitness may not match, or the playlist may not be configured. | Install VLC matching OBS’s architecture (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC), then check the VLC Video source’s playlist and loop setting. |
| OBS shows rising dropped frames or YouTube reports poor stream health | The connection to YouTube may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. | Test the connection, reduce bitrate if upload capacity cannot sustain it, and monitor OBS and Live Control Room. OBS explains dropped frames in its network troubleshooting guidance. |
| YouTube does not accept the stream key or no preview appears | The wrong stream URL/key may be entered, the key may have been changed, or the channel may not yet be eligible for live streaming. | Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room, keep the key private, and confirm verification and channel restrictions. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. |
| The stream is replaced by a placeholder or interrupted | YouTube may have detected third-party content. | Review the warning and rights for the material. If licensed content is involved, ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel through Content ID as YouTube directs. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the recorded lecture to keep streaming without leaving an OBS computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
