You can loop an ocean-wave video through FFmpeg and send it to YouTube Live, but a continuous broadcast depends on the computer, power, internet connection, and restart plan—not just the command. First confirm your channel can livestream and that you have rights to broadcast the audio and visuals continuously. Then create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, test the FFmpeg output privately or unlisted, and monitor it after going live.
Before you begin: channel access, media rights, and a continuity plan
Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the streamer must be at least 16, the channel must be verified, and it must have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guide.
Use audio and visuals you are allowed to stream
Use recordings and visuals you made yourself, or material whose license explicitly permits continuous public livestreaming, looping, monetization if relevant, and any archive you intend to keep. Save proof of permission. “Royalty-free” does not automatically mean unrestricted. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, and a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder’s settings require allowlisting. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Decide how you will handle a failure
With a local FFmpeg setup, continuity relies on the computer staying awake, powered, connected, and able to encode. Plan how to detect a stopped process or dropped connection and restart it; a restart may not resume the same YouTube event seamlessly. Also decide whether you need a complete recording: YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume a continuous 24-hour broadcast will appear as one complete archive.

Prepare a seamless ocean loop
Make one audiovisual file that contains the ocean audio and the visual you want on screen—such as a still shoreline, a slow-moving sea, or your own footage. Check that the audio loops without a click, silence, abrupt change in wave level, or other distracting seam. Listen through the intended loop point and inspect the visual transition before streaming; FFmpeg can repeat a file, but it cannot make a poorly joined recording sound seamless.
- Confirm the media file plays from beginning to end and contains the expected audio and picture.
- Check its frame size and frame rate so you can choose an output that does not demand unnecessary encoding or upload capacity.
- Keep permission records with the source files, including any terms that apply to continuous livestreaming and archiving.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live.
- Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube. Keep the key private: treat it like a password and do not put it in screenshots, public posts, source repositories, or published command examples.
- For the first test, set the stream visibility to private or unlisted. Confirm you have selected the intended event before starting FFmpeg.
Exact interface labels can change. YouTube’s current encoder walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Choose a resolution, bitrate, and audio format
Choose settings your upload connection can sustain with headroom, rather than choosing the highest resolution by default. For a mostly static meditation scene, 1080p at 30 frames per second is a practical starting target if the source and connection support it; it is an editorial recommendation, not a YouTube requirement. Audio is the focus, so 4K is usually unnecessary for this format.

| Setting | Practical choice or YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported encoder video codecs. The example below uses H.264. |
| 1080p30 H.264 video bitrate | YouTube’s current settings table recommends 14 Mbps. The example command uses 6 Mbps, which is a lower-bitrate illustrative setting and does not match that recommendation. |
| Rate control | Use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends for encoder streams. |
| Keyframe interval | Target 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second GOP is 60 frames. |
| Audio | AAC is supported. The example uses AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. |
| Ingest transport | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a given upload line or computer can sustain them. Choose a lower output resolution or bitrate if necessary, then test stream health. The current table is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Loop the file and send it with FFmpeg
For a single prepared file, this command shows the basic pattern. Replace the ingest host and key locally with the values from YouTube Studio; never publish a real key. The command is an illustrative starting point, not a tested preset. Check the behavior against your installed FFmpeg build and test your actual file before broadcasting.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i ocean-loop.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST/STREAM_KEY"
-rereads the file at approximately its intended playback rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. The source still needs a clean loop point.-c:v libx264encodes H.264 video;-r 30requests 30 fps, and-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to two seconds at 30 fps.-b:vand-maxrateset the illustrative 6 Mbps video target and cap;-bufsize 12Msets the rate-control buffer. This is below YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation for 1080p30 H.264, so use an appropriate rate for your target quality and connection.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at the shown bitrate and sample rate.-f flvselects the container used for this RTMP-family ingest pattern. Keep the RTMPS server URL and stream key together in the final destination.
Do not paste a live key into a public terminal transcript or log. If you need to keep it in a script, restrict access to that file and avoid sharing its contents.

Test the broadcast before making it public
- Start FFmpeg while the YouTube event is private or unlisted, then wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room.
- Listen for clipping, excessive loudness, silence, and the loop seam. Check that the picture moves or changes as intended.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the connection remains stable for a representative test period.
- Verify the correct stream and visibility before announcing it or switching it to public.
YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health and messages. A short static preview may not reveal a loop seam, intermittent network problem, or failure that appears only after longer operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the stream running and recover from interruptions
The infinite input loop handles the end of the media file; it does not guarantee recovery from an encoder crash, computer sleep, power outage, network loss, or YouTube disconnect. Keep the host awake, provide reliable power and upload capacity, monitor FFmpeg and Live Control Room, and arrange a manual or supervised restart process. After any restart, check YouTube’s event state and preview rather than assuming the broadcast resumed cleanly.
FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for supported protocol inputs, including retry-count and delay options, and reconnect_at_eof for treating end-of-file as an error on live or endless inputs. Those input-side controls do not establish that every RTMPS output disconnect will reconnect seamlessly. See the FFmpeg protocols documentation and test the behavior you actually need.

Troubleshoot common FFmpeg YouTube live-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube never receives the encoder feed | Wrong server URL or key, wrong event selected, or live streaming not activated. | Copy the URL and key again from the intended Live Control Room event; check channel eligibility and activation. Keep the key private. |
| Stream health warns or the feed buffers | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the computer cannot encode consistently. | Reduce resolution or bitrate, leave upload headroom, and test the same audio/video workload before going public. |
| Video appears choppy or is rejected | Output settings may not match the intended frame rate, keyframe interval, or supported format. | Check the FFmpeg output and YouTube encoder recommendations; for 30 fps and a 2-second keyframe interval, the example uses -r 30 -g 60. |
| Audio clicks, clips, or has an obvious break | The source may have a bad loop join, excessive level, or unintended silence. | Inspect and listen to the source at the join; fix the media and re-test rather than expecting the loop option to repair it. |
| FFmpeg stops or the event goes offline | Process exit, sleep, power or network loss, or an ingest interruption. | Check FFmpeg output and host/network status, restart the encoder if needed, and confirm the event is receiving video and audio again. |
| Live broadcast is interrupted over a rights claim | Third-party audio or visuals matched YouTube’s systems or the rights holder requires allowlisting. | Review the rights and Content ID status; obtain appropriate permission and ask the rights holder about allowlisting before restarting. |
| No single complete 24-hour archive appears | YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule covers streams under 12 hours. | Plan a separate recording/archive workflow if a full-day file matters. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your priority is avoiding a computer and home connection as single points of failure, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live around the clock. Upload the ocean-loop recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the service loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
Cost, archiving, and monetization considerations
Running FFmpeg locally avoids a separate hosted streaming service, but you are responsible for the computer, power, internet connection, storage, monitoring, and recovery. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not prescribe a particular computer or hardware encoder; actual encoding capacity depends on your file, settings, and installed build. If you need a full-day recording, account for the fact that YouTube says only streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program subject to its requirements; this setup alone does not establish eligibility.
