Use OBS with a VLC Video source to play a rights-cleared playlist, then prepare visuals in the same song order—or render each song as a complete audiovisual video. VLC can advance, loop, or shuffle playlist files; it does not automatically create song-matched graphics or guarantee that separately prepared visuals switch in sync. Test the complete stream before leaving it unattended.
What you need to make visuals change with each song
The dependable approach is to make the song and its intended visual part of the same playlist item. For example, pair each track with a prepared video containing that track’s artwork or animation, then put those videos in order in OBS. If you want to play separate audio files while changing separate visual sources, you will need an additional switching or automation setup; the OBS VLC playlist documentation does not describe automatic per-song visual matching.
- Rights-cleared media: audio and visuals you are authorized to broadcast live and, if applicable, leave available as a replay.

Confirm music rights before building the stream
YouTube’s livestream terms make the creator responsible for having the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Check the rights for the actual recordings and underlying compositions, intended territories, live online use, monetization if relevant, and any archived replay. In India, the Copyright Act defines communication to the public to include making a work or performance available for the public to see or hear, and separately addresses broadcast reproduction rights. These provisions make it important to verify the rights chain and permitted uses for the specific material; they do not establish whether any individual track or playlist is cleared for your stream. A consumer music subscription, purchased track, or publicly viewable upload does not by itself show that you have permission for this particular broadcast and replay. When the scope is unclear, confirm it with the relevant rights holders or qualified counsel.
Build the playlist and visuals in OBS
- Organize your files. Put rights-cleared media in the intended song order. For predictable song-to-visual changes, use complete audiovisual files—one prepared video per song—rather than assuming OBS will match independent audio and graphic files automatically.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and configure its playlist with the prepared files. If this source is missing, install VLC; on a 64-bit OBS installation, install 64-bit VLC. The exact controls can vary by installed software version. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Choose the sequence behavior. Keep shuffle off for a deliberate song order. Turn it on only if you want the playlist randomized. Enable looping if the playlist should start again after its last item.
- Compose the scene. Set the VLC source’s position and size in the OBS preview. Add only the overlays or other sources you intend to use, and check that they do not obscure important visuals.
- Check audio and transitions. Play through representative items and confirm that audio is audible, the correct visual appears for each song, and the transition works at the end of one item and start of the next. A separate visualizer or automation tool may need its own setup and testing; compatibility and unattended operation are not established by OBS’s playlist documentation.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming if needed. Complete YouTube’s activation process; YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open the encoder details for that stream.
- Enter the stream URL and key in OBS. Use YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
- Check the YouTube preview before going live. Wait for the encoder preview, confirm that both audio and video are present, and start the stream from OBS when the preview and planned broadcast are ready.
Set a sustainable video bitrate and test the whole playlist
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists a minimum bitrate of 5 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 10 Mbps. These are encoder settings recommendations, not a guarantee of stream quality or uptime. Before promoting a 24/7 schedule, test representative audio and motion, the playlist loop, and the exact visual changes on both the encoder preview and the YouTube watch page. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and messages. Keep monitoring available during the broadcast, and test your recovery procedure; neither OBS playlist playback nor YouTube guidance promises uninterrupted operation. Know what can interrupt a music livestream
YouTube’s live Content ID matching can warn a streamer when matching content is detected. If the match continues, YouTube may replace the stream with a static image without sound or terminate the broadcast. Eligibility for YouTube’s live matching feature has conditions, including global rights and exclusive ownership for content submitted to that feature; access to a claim policy or a belief that a track is licensed is not proof that your stream has the required rights. - Playlist does not advance: confirm that the VLC Video source contains the intended files and that playback has not stopped at the end of the list; check the loop setting if it should repeat.
- Wrong visual for a song: verify playlist order and whether shuffle is enabled. For exact song-to-visual pairing, prepare each song as a complete audiovisual item.
- VLC source is unavailable: install VLC and confirm that its architecture matches OBS; OBS calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- YouTube preview has no audio or video: check OBS source visibility, playback, audio levels, and the selected stream URL and key. Test again before starting a public broadcast.
- Stream health degrades or the broadcast ends: check YouTube’s stream health messages and your upload connection, then restore the encoder connection and verify the preview. YouTube may also interrupt a stream for live Content ID matching.
