You can run the encoder on a computer, use standalone hardware, or use a cloud service. Before starting, confirm your channel is eligible, clear the rights to every lecture and supporting asset, and plan for YouTube’s limits on archiving streams longer than 12 hours.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s guidance, checked October 3, 2026, says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- A playlist of prerecorded lectures in an encoder capable of continuous playback. YouTube supports software encoders, standalone hardware, and listed cloud services; its verified encoder directory includes OBS and cloud services such as Gyre. Listings are options, not endorsements. YouTube’s encoder directory.
- A stable connection and an encoder host or service that can stay active. For a computer-based encoder, the computer and connection must remain available while it sends the stream.
- Permission to broadcast each lecture and every included photograph, map, archival film, illustration, music track, and embedded clip. Educational subject matter or online availability does not itself grant rebroadcast rights.
- A separate local recording workflow if you need a dependable copy of the full program. YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours as an archive.
Choose how to run the encoder

No purchase is required by YouTube’s setup guidance. A dedicated computer such as a mini PC is one possible host for software encoding, not a YouTube requirement or recommendation. Compare the operating burden and recording needs alongside price: YouTube’s encoder directory does not establish that any route is universally more reliable.
Prepare the lecture playlist and rights
Build a coherent schedule
Arrange lectures in an intentional order rather than treating 24/7 playback as a substitute for programming. Check that the encoder can return to the start of the playlist after its final item, and test transitions, audio levels, and any gaps between files. Keep an independent copy of the playlist and source files so a host or service issue does not erase your program materials.
Clear every item for live rebroadcast
YouTube says creators are responsible for the rights needed for live content and scans streams for third-party matches. Its help guidance says a matched feed can be replaced with a placeholder, and a stream may be interrupted or terminated if the issue remains. Even a licensed third-party work can interrupt a stream if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

- Check rights for the lecture recording itself, not just the lecture topic or speaker.
- Review every image, map, film excerpt, illustration, music cue, and clip embedded in the recording.
- Confirm that your permission covers continuous live streaming and the relevant territories.
- Do not assume that educational use or another person’s public upload makes rebroadcasting permissible.
These checks are practical precautions, not a legal determination about any particular work.
Create the YouTube stream and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a new live stream or schedule one. Use the stream details shown there for the encoder. YouTube explains that the stream URL and stream key direct the encoder’s feed to the right live event. YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your stream. Keep it private, and use YouTube’s stream controls if you need to replace it.
- Load the lecture playlist. Set the encoder or service to play the prerecorded items continuously. Verify that it advances through the playlist and restarts it as intended. Exact playlist controls depend on the encoder you choose.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed and inspect the preview before you go live. Confirm the picture, audio, stream destination, and selected live event are correct.
- Start the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Monitor the live preview and stream-health messages after going live. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to YouTube Live. YouTube’s stream-health troubleshooting guidance.
Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. A single continuous 24-hour feed therefore is not a dependable YouTube replay archive. Keep a local recording if preservation matters, and test your encoder and recording process before relying on them. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Decide in advance how you will handle the local files: monitor available storage, verify that recordings are actually being written, and check that the resulting files can be played back. The YouTube archive caveat does not establish how a particular encoder records, so verify that behavior separately.
Monetization and educational value
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. Monetization depends on Partner Program access, feature eligibility, rights, and compliance with the applicable policies. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic; mass-produced, generic, or repetitive content is ineligible, and its policy applies to videos including live streams. A long running schedule alone does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

For a history channel, make the programming meaningfully educational and editorially deliberate: explain the sequence, provide context where appropriate, and use material you created or have permission to broadcast. Review the current YouTube policies and feature requirements rather than assuming that continuous hours or a particular subject guarantees monetization.
