Maintain a first-generation Honda NSX by following the owner’s manual for its exact model year and market, performing each task at the mileage or time limit that comes first, and documenting every operation. Give special priority to proving the timing-belt and water-pump history, then keep current on oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, tires, belts, hoses, brakes and underbody inspections. A car with missing records should receive a documented baseline service from a technician who knows the NSX before it is treated as “sorted.”
What “classic NSX maintenance” involves
This guide covers the first-generation NSX, commonly identified as NA1 and NA2. It does not assume that one interval applies to every year, market, engine or transmission. The cited Honda schedules are U.S. owner’s-manual examples for 2000 and 2002; use the manual issued for the car you actually own.
Age changes the maintenance question. A low-mileage NSX can still have ten-, twenty- or thirty-year-old coolant hoses, seals, brake fluid, tires and electrical components. Conversely, a frequently driven car may reach a mileage interval long before its calendar interval. Honda’s instruction is to service at the indicated mileage or time, whichever comes first.

Identify the car before choosing parts
- Record the model year, market, chassis number, engine designation and transmission type.
- Collect every invoice, inspection sheet, owner’s-manual entry and parts receipt. A seller’s verbal statement that a belt was “done” is not a service record.
- Ask the servicing shop to write down the date, mileage, work performed, parts brand and part numbers.
- When a part or interval differs by year, transmission or update, resolve the difference with the matching Honda service information rather than a generalized internet interval.
Use a baseline inspection for an undocumented car
For a car with incomplete history, inspect fluids, leaks, belts, hoses, cooling-system connections, brakes, tires, steering, suspension, driveshaft boots, fuel lines, exhaust, lights and the underbody before planning discretionary upgrades. Photograph findings and separate safety-critical repairs from preventative work. This creates a known starting point without assuming that every commonly reported NSX issue is present.

Ask for measurements, not only a pass/fail statement. A useful report records tire date codes and tread depth, brake-pad and rotor measurements, battery and charging voltage, visible hose condition, fluid appearance, leak locations and any warning lights. Have the technician identify which observations require immediate attention, which can be monitored, and when each monitored item should be reinspected.
Honda schedule figures you can use—within their limits
The following figures come from specific U.S. owner’s manuals and are examples, not a universal NSX schedule.
| Task | Published interval | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | 3,750 miles (6,000 km) or six months | American Honda Motor Co., Inc., 2000 owner’s manual |
| Coolant replacement | 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or 10 years; then every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or five years | American Honda Motor Co., Inc., 2002 U.S. owner’s manual |
| Manual-transmission fluid | 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or six years | American Honda Motor Co., Inc., 2002 U.S. schedule |
| Automatic-transmission fluid | 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or six years; then every 90,000 miles (144,000 km) or five years | American Honda Motor Co., Inc., 2002 U.S. schedule |
| Brake fluid | Every three years | American Honda Motor Co., Inc., 2002 U.S. schedule |
The 2000 manual also calls for checking engine oil and coolant at fuel stops, recurring brake and tire inspections, timing-belt replacement with water-pump inspection, coolant and transmission-fluid service at schedule points, belt and cooling-system checks, and fluid-condition checks. Honda’s manuals state that valve clearance should be checked and adjusted when it is noisy.

Do not transfer the 2002 figures to a different year or market without checking that car’s manual. The 2000 and 2002 examples demonstrate why the original schedule matters: Honda’s published time limits and sequence can change.
Turn the schedule into a calendar
Enter every task twice in your log: once by mileage and once by date. For example, record the next oil service as “6,000 km or six months, whichever comes first,” rather than writing only a target odometer reading. Add the severe-use designation if the car regularly takes short trips, idles in traffic, operates in extreme heat or mountainous terrain, or sees mud, dust or de-iced roads. At each visit, the shop should stamp or sign the entry and note the actual mileage.
Timing belt and water pump: the service to prove
Why records matter
The timing belt is a scheduled maintenance item, and Honda’s schedules pair its replacement with a water-pump inspection. Belt age is calendar-dependent, so a garage-kept NSX with very low mileage can still be overdue under its applicable schedule. If no dated, itemized evidence exists, have an NSX-qualified shop inspect the records and plan the service rather than guessing from appearance.

What a complete job should identify
Request an itemized scope that names the belt, water pump, seals and gaskets, tensioning hardware, accessory belts and any other components the technician intends to replace. A specialist supplier markets a timing-belt and water-pump kit around a 90,000-mile/six-year interval and lists related filters, gaskets and seals. That is the supplier’s guidance and kit content, not Honda’s universal interval. The shop should reconcile it with the vehicle’s own manual and prior updates.
Recommended Free Tools
Clarify whether the quote covers cleaning, coolant refill and bleeding, disposal of old fluids, inspection for oil contamination and a post-service leak check. Ask which parts are being reused and why. A low quote that excludes seals, belts or proper coolant service may not represent the same job as a higher, fully itemized estimate. Obtain the written estimate before disassembly so additional findings can be approved deliberately.
Check water-pump fitment before ordering
Science of Speed notes a short weep-nipple water pump on 1991–96 NSXs and a longer-nipple design introduced in 1997; it also says some early cars may already have the later pump and cover. Treat this as a supplier fitment note. Have the parts source identify what is installed on the individual engine before selecting a pump, cover or kit.
Fluids and routine checks
Engine oil and coolant
Follow the exact oil grade and capacity in the applicable manual, replace the filter at the scheduled interval, and look for leaks or contamination at every check. The 2000 U.S. manual’s 3,750-mile or six-month oil-and-filter interval is especially useful for setting a conservative recordkeeping rhythm on an older car. Check oil and coolant at fuel stops as Honda instructs, but never open a hot cooling system.
Use the 2002 coolant limits only for cars to which that schedule applies: 120,000 miles or 10 years initially, then 60,000 miles or five years. At each service, inspect hoses, clamps, radiator and engine connections, expansion-tank condition and evidence of dried coolant. A replacement interval does not excuse repairing a soft, swollen or leaking hose immediately.
Transmission fluid
Manual and automatic cars have different Honda schedule entries. The cited 2002 manual lists manual-transmission fluid at 120,000 miles or six years. Its automatic-transmission schedule lists 120,000 miles or six years, then 90,000 miles or five years. Verify the fluid specification and filling procedure for the transmission actually fitted; do not substitute a generic fluid because the car shares a manufacturer.

Brake fluid
The cited 2002 U.S. schedule calls for brake-fluid replacement every three years. Test the system for leaks, inspect lines and hoses, and assess pedal feel and fluid condition. A fluid flush cannot compensate for a seized caliper, corroded line or worn friction material; those are separate repairs.
Inspection checklist for an aging NSX
Cooling system and belts
- Look for cracked, hardened, swollen or oil-contaminated coolant hoses and loose or corroded connections.
- Inspect accessory belts for glazing, fraying and incorrect tension.
- Check the radiator, water pump area, expansion tank and hose joints for leaks or dried residue.
- Confirm that the temperature gauge behaves normally during a controlled road test and that fans operate as designed.
Brakes, tires and wheels
- Measure pad and rotor condition rather than judging by remaining friction material alone.
- Inspect brake lines, flexible hoses, calipers and the parking-brake mechanism.
- Check tire age, sidewall cracking, tread, pressures and uneven wear; low mileage does not make an old tire safe.
- Look for bent wheels, damaged wheel studs and vibration during braking or cruising.
Steering, suspension and driveline
- Inspect steering joints, boots, rack area and power-assistance leaks.
- Check dampers, springs, bushings, ball joints and mounting points for play, cracking or corrosion.
- Examine driveshaft boots for tears and grease loss.
- Inspect the underbody for impact damage, corrosion, fluid leaks and missing fasteners.
Fuel, exhaust and electrical equipment
- Inspect fuel lines, connections and the tank area for smell, wetness or deterioration.
- Check exhaust components, shields, hangers and heat damage.
- Test exterior lights, warning lamps, climate-control functions, windows, locks and charging voltage.
Known issue reports: useful prompts, not diagnoses
A secondary NSX maintenance guide flags coolant-hose deterioration, early manual-transmission snap-ring concerns, climate-control electronics, window regulators and ABS faults. Use these as inspection prompts on the actual vehicle. They are not proof that a particular car will fail.
The guide reports that some 1991–92 manual cars may fall within a snap-ring serial-number range, but that range was not established here from an official Honda bulletin. Ask an NSX specialist or Acura/Honda service source to check the individual transmission and chassis history. Do not describe a secondary range as a confirmed campaign for every early car.
Severe-use schedules and cars that sit
The 2000 U.S. manual directs owners to use its severe-conditions schedule when the NSX is mainly driven on short trips, in extreme heat, with extensive idling or stop-and-go traffic, in mountainous conditions, or on muddy, dusty or de-iced roads. If the car sees those conditions, follow the severe schedule in the correct manual instead of the normal schedule.
Storage does not stop calendar aging. A seldom-driven car still needs time-based coolant, brake-fluid and belt attention, plus battery, tire and leak checks. Record the date of each service so the next owner or technician can distinguish mileage-driven work from age-driven work.
After storage, inspect for rodent damage, fluid spots and tire pressure loss before driving at speed. Verify that the brake pedal is firm, all warning lamps behave normally at startup, and the cooling system reaches normal operating temperature without overheating. A short, gentle test drive followed by a second leak inspection can reveal problems that were not visible while the car was parked.

How to choose a dealer, specialist or DIY approach
There is no universal price comparison supported by the available service information; location, parts sourcing, corrosion, condition and job scope dominate the estimate. Compare providers on the following points:
- NSX experience and information access: ask whether the shop has worked on NA1/NA2 cars and can consult the correct model-year service information.
- Fitment control: require the quote to identify year, market, engine, transmission and chassis number.
- Itemized scope: ensure the timing-belt quote states whether the water pump, seals, gaskets, tensioning parts and accessory belts are included.
- Parts verification: ask how Honda part numbers, supersessions and already-updated components will be checked.
- Warranty and records: obtain written warranty terms, mileage and date, and retain the final invoice with part numbers.
- DIY limits: do not undertake belt, cooling or brake work without the correct procedures, lifting equipment, torque information and a way to verify the result.
A dealer may offer direct access to Honda records and current part-number systems; an independent NSX specialist may provide deeper hands-on familiarity with older updates. The sensible choice is the provider that can demonstrate correct information, safe procedures and clear documentation, not simply the lowest hourly rate.
Parts sourcing when availability is uncertain
Honda Heritage Works publishes NSX parts-catalog material and a continuing-supply list, while warning that some parts have been discontinued. Catalog illustrations are not disassembly drawings. Before ordering, confirm the model, chassis number, exact part number and quantity with a dealer or qualified parts source. Do not assume that an old catalog price represents current cost or that a part shown in a catalog is in stock.
For a timing-belt search, use the vehicle’s year and VIN or chassis number and require fitment confirmation. A generic Honda belt is not automatically correct for an NSX. Keep the packaging and supersession information with the service record so future work can identify what was installed.
A practical maintenance workflow
- Build the identity file. Write down VIN or chassis number, model year, market, engine, transmission and current mileage.
- Reconstruct history. Sort invoices by date and mileage; mark timing-belt, water-pump, coolant, transmission-fluid and brake-fluid evidence separately.
- Resolve the largest uncertainty first. If belt service cannot be proved, obtain a written inspection and estimate from an NSX-qualified technician.
- Perform the baseline inspection. Cover cooling hoses and connections, belts, fluid condition, brakes, tires, steering, suspension, driveshaft boots, fuel lines, exhaust, lights and the underbody.
- Set recurring reminders. Enter both mileage and calendar deadlines because the first limit reached controls.
- Use severe-service guidance when applicable. Tell the technician about short trips, heat, idling, mountains, dust, mud or de-iced roads.
- Close the record. File the invoice, parts numbers, measurements, photographs and next due mileage/date after every visit.
Questions to ask when buying an older NSX
- When, at what mileage and with which parts was the timing belt replaced?
- Was the water pump inspected or replaced at the same service?
- When were coolant, manual or automatic transmission fluid and brake fluid last replaced?
- Have coolant hoses, belts, brake lines, tires and suspension components been inspected recently?
- Can the seller provide invoices rather than relying on memory?
- Has an NSX specialist checked the transmission, ABS, windows and climate-control operation?
If the answers are unknown, price the car and schedule around the work required to establish a safe baseline. Do not convert a reported issue list into a diagnosis without examining the specific chassis.
Keeping the NSX maintainable for the long term
Use one record system, retain old parts and photographs when practical, and note every superseded part number. Have the shop record fluid types, measured brake and tire condition, cooling-system findings and any component that was already updated. Recheck unresolved observations at the next visit rather than allowing them to disappear into a verbal handoff.

Keep a copy of the applicable owner’s manual with the car and give the technician the relevant pages when an interval is disputed. When the car changes hands, transfer the invoices, photographs and parts list; continuity is especially valuable when a component has been superseded or discontinued.
The most defensible maintenance plan is therefore neither “oil only” nor a blanket list of internet intervals. It is the correct Honda schedule for the car, applied at the earlier of mileage or time, supplemented by condition inspections that recognize the age of a classic vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a classic Honda NSX receive an oil change?
The 2000 U.S. owner’s manual specifies engine oil and filter replacement every 3,750 miles (6,000 km) or six months, whichever comes first. Confirm the interval in the manual for your model year and market.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
When should the NSX timing belt and water pump be serviced?
Use the timing-belt interval in the exact owner’s manual and verify the water-pump inspection at the same service. If dated, itemized records are missing, have an NSX-qualified technician assess the car rather than relying on mileage or visual belt condition.
What coolant interval applies to a 2002 U.S.-specification NSX?
The cited 2002 schedule lists coolant replacement at 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or 10 years, then every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or five years. Those figures are specific to that schedule and should not be applied automatically to another year or market.
How often should NSX brake fluid be replaced?
The 2002 U.S. owner’s manual schedule calls for replacement every three years. Inspect the entire hydraulic system as well; fresh fluid does not repair worn pads, seized calipers or corroded lines.
Are reported NSX snap-ring, ABS, window and climate-control problems guaranteed failures?
No. They are inspection prompts reported in secondary guidance. Confirm applicability and condition on the individual car, and ask an Acura/Honda or NSX specialist to verify any transmission-range or campaign concern through authoritative records.
How can I confirm that a replacement part fits my NSX?
Provide the model year, market, chassis number, engine and transmission, then have a dealer or qualified parts source verify the exact Honda part number, supersession and quantity. Honda Heritage Works warns that some parts are discontinued and that catalog illustrations are not disassembly drawings.
The Bottom Line
Maintain a classic NSX by using its own Honda schedule, servicing at the earlier of mileage or time, proving the timing-belt and water-pump history, and inspecting age-sensitive systems at every baseline and scheduled visit. Keep itemized records and verify every part by chassis and part number; when history or fitment is uncertain, use an NSX-experienced technician rather than a generalized interval.
