You cannot change OBS’s Video-tab resolution while an output is active using its documented workflow. OBS requires you to turn off outputs before changing Video settings, so lowering resolution means a planned stream interruption: stop the output, change Settings > Video > Output (Scaled) Resolution, then restart. YouTube’s viewer-side transcoding does not keep the OBS feed connected during that change.
What to change in OBS
For a lower-resolution stream, adjust Output (Scaled) Resolution, not usually Base (Canvas) Resolution. Output (Scaled) Resolution sets the resolution sent to the stream or recording after scaling. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace used to arrange sources in your scenes.
OBS notes that changing the canvas can require repositioning or resizing sources; changing the output resolution does not have that effect. For example, you can keep a 1080p canvas and scale the stream output to 720p.
Change resolution with a planned interruption
- Prepare the change before going live. Choose the target output resolution and check whether your scenes remain legible at that size. Test the intended setup in advance where possible.
- Stop the active output. OBS’s Video settings warning says, “Video output is currently active. Please turn off any outputs to change video settings.” Stop the stream output before proceeding.
- Open Settings > Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the desired lower resolution, such as 1280×720 for 720p. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at the size appropriate for your scene layout unless you have a separate reason to change it.
- Apply the setting and restart your stream. Start the output again using the intended configuration, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Do not assume the restart preserves the same YouTube live event or viewer session. The available YouTube guidance does not promise that outcome. Schedule the change as maintenance, tell viewers about the expected interruption if appropriate, and avoid describing it as seamless.

Lowering resolution is not the only performance option
Reducing output resolution can reduce encoder load. If the system is struggling, OBS also identifies reducing frame rate as a way to lower rendering and encoding work; for example, try 30 fps instead of 60 fps if 60 fps is not working. The trade-off is less image detail at lower resolution or less smooth motion at lower frame rate. The actual performance and visual result depend on your system and stream content, so test before making a production change.
Changing Base (Canvas) Resolution is more disruptive because source positions and sizes may need adjustment. OBS cautions against lowering it except when GPU resources are severely constrained.

Use profiles to prepare, not to avoid the restart
If you switch between configurations, you can create an OBS Profile in advance to save Stream, Video, and Output settings. Profiles do not save Scenes, and selecting a profile does not remove the active-output restriction on changing Video settings. Prepare and test the profile before the maintenance transition.
Check YouTube stream health after restarting
YouTube recommends choosing a stream quality reliable for your internet connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube also transcodes incoming live streams into different formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions; that affects viewer playback options, not whether OBS can change its active encoder configuration without stopping.

Troubleshooting
- OBS will not let you change Video settings: An output is still active. Turn off the relevant outputs, then return to Settings > Video.
- Your scenes look misaligned after changing resolution: Check whether you changed Base (Canvas) Resolution. Restore the intended canvas size or realign and resize sources as needed; output scaling alone does not require that layout work.
- The restarted stream has health warnings: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify that the chosen quality is reliable for the available connection. Test with representative audio and motion before the next scheduled change.
- You expected transcoding to prevent a break: Transcoding creates viewer playback formats from an incoming feed; it does not keep OBS connected while its output is stopped.
