To loop local videos into a YouTube Live stream with FFmpeg, put compatible files in a concat-demuxer text playlist, then send that playlist to YouTube’s ingest server using your stream URL and key. The playlist handles the sequence; FFmpeg handles encoding and transmission. You must test the files, transitions, and stream health before relying on an unattended broadcast.
What you need before you start
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can read the video files and stay connected for the duration of the stream.
- Local video files that are compatible with one another for the concat demuxer.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you select.
- Permission to stream every video and audio track in the playlist.
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access before planning a broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Build the text playlist
Create a plain-text file, for example playlist.ffconcat. When FFmpeg is expected to recognize the concat format automatically, the exact first line must be ffconcat version 1.0, without leading whitespace or a byte-order mark. Add one file directive per video, in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
Save the playlist where the file paths resolve correctly. Relative paths are interpreted from the working directory; alternatively, use paths appropriate to your operating system. Paths with spaces or special characters need quoting or escaping according to the concat syntax. Test the list with your actual files before sending it to YouTube. The FFmpeg formats documentation describes the concat demuxer and its playlist syntax.

Make the videos compatible
The concat demuxer reads packets from files in sequence as though they had been joined into one input. For this to work reliably, inputs need the same streams, codecs, and time bases. A playlist of files with mismatched audio or video streams, codecs, or time bases may fail or produce playback problems; convert or otherwise standardize the files before using them together.
FFmpeg adjusts timestamps to place each file after the previous one. If a file’s duration is inaccurate—for example, because it is truncated or its duration is estimated incorrectly—timestamp artifacts or bad transitions can result. The concat format supports a duration directive to override a file’s duration when necessary. Avoid disabling the default safe=1 behavior simply to make a questionable path work: it rejects unsafe paths and directives. Fix the path or playlist entry instead, and test any change with the exact FFmpeg build and media you will use.

Get YouTube’s stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or select the stream you intend to use.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder setup.
- Keep the key private. Treat it as a credential: do not put it in a public script, share it in a screenshot, or post a command containing it. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio.
YouTube’s encoder guide explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest; prefer RTMPS where available. Its ingest address and stream key are separate values, and both must be entered correctly for the encoder to connect. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your FFmpeg build, operating system, chosen video and audio codecs, and desired repeat behavior. Confirm the appropriate looping and output options against your installed version and test the command with your playlist before broadcasting; do not assume a command copied from another setup will work unchanged.

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as a starting point, not as a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream. The following are YouTube’s recommended bitrate figures for the specified H.264 modes, accessed in 2026:

| Output mode | Video codec | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 8 Mbps |
YouTube’s current guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the YouTube Live encoder settings for the bitrate recommendation matching your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Test your upload capacity at the intended setting; an internet plan’s advertised download speed does not establish that its upload is sufficient.
Test the playlist and broadcast
- Run a local test of the playlist to check that every file opens and plays in the intended order.
- Listen for audio continuity and watch transitions between files. Check for missing sound, black frames, freezes, or unexpected gaps.
- Start the YouTube stream as a test before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast.
- Check the Studio preview, stream health, and any encoder messages. Confirm the stream remains live and that the playlist advances across a file boundary.
- Only rely on unattended operation after the full sequence and intended repeat behavior have been verified in your setup.
A successful connection alone does not prove the whole playlist is sound: inspect transitions and stream health while the test is running.

Set visibility and confirm rights
Choose public, private, or unlisted visibility deliberately in YouTube Studio, and configure any scheduling or channel controls there. Confirm you have the rights needed for every video and audio track before streaming. YouTube provides rights-management controls, but whether a particular recording may be broadcast depends on the rights attached to that material.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the playlist header: Check that
ffconcat version 1.0is the first line with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, and that the file is plain text. - A file cannot be opened: Check the working directory, relative or absolute path, spelling, and quoting or escaping for spaces and special characters. Keep the default safe-path behavior unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- The playlist stops or has broken transitions: Verify every input has matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Check for truncated files or inaccurate durations; a concat
durationdirective may be needed for a known duration discrepancy. - YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key, ingest selection, encoder output, and channel live-stream eligibility. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The stream health is poor or the feed stalls: Compare your sustained upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test at a lower supported output setting if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- The stream goes live but video or sound is wrong: Inspect the preview and encoder messages, then test representative files for missing or incompatible streams and confirm audio continuity at playlist boundaries.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer and home connection to keep the broadcast running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
