To loop a store promotion on YouTube Live, add the video to an OBS Studio Media Source, enable Loop, then send OBS to an encoder stream created in YouTube Studio. For several promotions, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. The video repeats while your computer and internet connection remain available.
Before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips
- A computer that can run OBS Studio, the promotion video file, and a reliable internet connection.
- For a playlist, VLC installed on the computer. OBS’s VLC Video source may not appear without VLC; OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS media sources documentation
- Permission to stream all video, graphics, logos, and audio in the promotion, including music.
You do not need a camera for this workflow: OBS sends the prerecorded file as the live program.
Loop one promotion video in OBS
- Enable live streaming on the channel. In YouTube Studio, use Create → Go Live and complete any first-time activation steps. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up a stream using an encoder. Keep the Live Control Room open so you can copy the stream URL and stream key in the next step.
- Make an OBS scene. Open OBS Studio and add a scene if the Scenes panel is empty. In the Sources panel, select +, then Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name and choose OK.
- Select the promotion video and enable its loop. In the Media Source properties, select Local File, browse to the video, and check Loop. OBS describes this property as specifying whether the file plays again after playback has completed. Select OK, then confirm the video appears in the OBS preview. OBS media sources documentation
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder from OBS and confirm the incoming video and audio in YouTube’s Live Control Room. When the preview is correct, use the Live Control Room’s controls to start the public broadcast if it is not already set to start automatically.
Loop several promotion videos as a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a source with + and select VLC Video. If that source is missing, check the VLC installation and architecture.
- Add the video files to the VLC source’s playlist in the order you want them to play. Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the start after the last clip.
- Check the OBS preview for the right order, image, and audio, then connect and start the encoder as described above.

Prepare and monitor the broadcast
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. That gives you time to check the preview and the watch page before viewers arrive. Monitor audio and video during the broadcast rather than assuming the loop is still playing correctly. - Confirm the correct video or playlist is visible in the OBS preview.
- Check that audio is audible and at an appropriate level; muted or unexpectedly loud promotion audio is easy to miss if you only check the picture.
- Open the YouTube watch page and confirm viewers can reach it.
- Keep OBS running with the source files available on the computer for the whole broadcast. This local method depends on the computer and its connection remaining available.
Rights, YouTube rules, and monetization
You are responsible for having the rights needed to stream the promotion’s content on Google services, including music rights, and for complying with applicable law and YouTube’s Community Guidelines. A store’s permission to use a song in an in-person promotion does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it online. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and channel monetization policies.
Looping is a playback setting, not a route to monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policy says content should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is covered; the company said the update clarified the existing policy rather than changing it. Consider the channel’s overall originality, viewer value, and policy compliance instead of assuming a repeating video will qualify.

Keep a copy of a long broadcast
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a durable record, save a local archive as well as relying on YouTube’s archive. YouTube archive live streams
When OBS is not the right fit
OBS is useful when someone can supervise a store event and keep the computer running. If the goal is an unattended, continuous YouTube broadcast, a cloud service is another approach: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists Gyre as a tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. Evaluate any service’s playlist support, scheduling, recovery behavior, destination, access requirements, rights responsibilities, and cost before choosing it. YouTube encoder streaming guidance
