You can use VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) to repeat a prerecorded showroom video or playlist, but looping the footage and sending a compatible live feed to YouTube are separate jobs. VLC’s documentation explains how to loop a broadcast input list; YouTube requires an encoder that supports the ingest protocol selected in Live Control Room. The official documentation cited below does not confirm that a particular VLC version can publish directly to YouTube over RTMPS, so verify that compatibility before relying on a direct connection.

What you need to make the loop work

A continuous YouTube Live presentation needs both repeated playback and a working encoder-to-YouTube connection. VLM’s loop behavior restarts its input list after the last item finishes. Separately, YouTube accepts a live feed through a compatible encoder and provides the current ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room.

  • Playback: one file or an ordered list of showroom clips, configured to repeat.
  • Ingest: an encoder that supports the protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room, such as RTMPS or HLS.
  • Continuity: a setup that keeps the outgoing stream active as playback reaches a clip boundary. Test this; a playback loop alone does not prove the live connection will remain uninterrupted.
  • Availability: for a local setup, the playback and encoding equipment and its internet connection must remain available while you are live.

VideoLAN documents VLM as a way to define broadcast inputs and outputs. Its VLM reference describes loop and unloop behavior. The example in VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 uses sout-keep to prevent a stream from breaking when a playlist item ends, but demonstrates a local HTTP receiver—not YouTube ingest. See the VLM reference and the VLC Desktop 3.0 VLM playlist example.

Prepare the showroom footage

  1. Choose the playback plan. Decide whether VLM should repeat one long showroom video or cycle through a list of shorter clips. For a playlist, check the order and confirm that the final item should lead back to the first.
  2. Review the presentation. Play the files before streaming. Check picture and sound, aspect ratio, and whether transitions or pauses between clips are acceptable for a continuously running showroom.
  3. Confirm the files are yours to stream. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still apply to prerecorded footage, including music, voiceovers, and material supplied by others. Obtain the rights or permissions you need; looping does not change those obligations.

Configure a repeating VLM broadcast

VLM can define a broadcast with an input list and a stream output. Its documented loop behavior restarts that list once the last input finishes. The exact configuration depends on your VLC version and how its stream output is set up; the official sources here do not establish a tested YouTube-ready VLM configuration or a universal GUI menu path.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  1. Define the broadcast inputs. Add the showroom file, or the playlist items, to the VLM broadcast in the intended order.
  2. Enable looping for that broadcast. Use VLM’s documented loop option. The loop applies to the broadcast’s input list; it does not create a YouTube connection by itself.
  3. Set an output that your encoder path supports. VLM needs an output, but the documented VLC Desktop 3.0 playlist example outputs to a local HTTP receiver. Do not treat that example’s local URL or its sout-keep setting as a YouTube ingest configuration.
  4. Check continuity at item changes. If your VLC setup uses a playlist stream output, VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 example uses sout-keep so streaming does not break when an item ends. Treat it as a versioned example, not a guarantee of seamless transitions in your installation.

If you are adapting the VLM example, follow its instructions for the VLC version it documents and keep the local receiver test distinct from publishing to YouTube. The sources do not establish that direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS output works in a particular release. Verify the installed VLC version’s protocol and encoder support rather than assuming compatibility.

Connect an encoder to YouTube Live

RTMPS

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and instructs creators to use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room with an encoder that supports RTMPS. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream settings, reveal the RTMPS URL with the lock icon, and copy the current URL and stream key into the compatible encoder. Use the values shown for your stream rather than a hard-coded server address. YouTube’s guide is at Stream using RTMPS.

Keep the stream key private: it is a credential used by the encoder. Do not include it in screenshots, shared configuration, or public notes. If YouTube reports an SSL error, its RTMPS guidance describes checking the protocol and server URL and suggests port 443 in certain cases.

HLS

HLS is another YouTube ingest option, but it is not a VLC loop feature. You need an encoder with HLS support and the HLS URL and stream key provided for that ingest method. YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption apart from HTTPS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. See Use HLS ingest for live streaming.

Test before starting the public event

Because playback, encoding, and YouTube ingest are separate parts of the chain, verify them together before depending on the stream. Use a private or unlisted test workflow, as appropriate for your channel, and check YouTube’s preview before starting the public event.

  • Confirm the correct showroom file or playlist appears in the preview.
  • Listen for audio and check the aspect ratio and framing.
  • Wait for a clip boundary and confirm playback starts again as intended.
  • Check that the outgoing feed remains active across that boundary and that YouTube’s preview stays stable.
  • Confirm the stream is using the intended ingest protocol and current Live Control Room values.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely issue What to check
The video plays once and stops. Looping was not enabled for the VLM broadcast, or the intended files are not all in its input list. Check the broadcast’s input list and its loop setting. VLM loops the list after its last input; ordinary playback alone does not establish that behavior.
The local loop works, but YouTube does not receive a stream. The output path may not use an encoder compatible with the selected YouTube ingest protocol. Check whether the encoder supports the RTMPS or HLS method selected in Live Control Room. VLC’s documented local HTTP example is not proof of YouTube compatibility.
The stream drops as a clip ends. The stream output may be closing between playlist items. Review the output behavior for your VLC version. VideoLAN’s Desktop 3.0 example uses sout-keep to keep streaming at item ends, but test your own configuration.
YouTube reports an SSL or connection error. The protocol or server URL may be wrong, or the encoder may not support RTMPS. Copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, verify RTMPS support in the encoder, and consult YouTube’s connection guidance. Its page suggests port 443 in certain SSL-error cases.
The video repeats but sound or framing is wrong. The source file or presentation settings may not suit the intended live output. Review the source playback and inspect audio and aspect ratio in YouTube’s preview before the public event.
