You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live by running FFmpeg on an Amazon EC2 instance, reading the file in real time with -re, looping it with -stream_loop -1, and publishing to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your YouTube event. The loop option makes FFmpeg repeat the input indefinitely; it does not guarantee that YouTube or the EC2 instance will stay live indefinitely.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- An Amazon EC2 instance that can access the video and run FFmpeg at the media’s required rate, with enough outbound network capacity for the stream. Instance sizing and current costs depend on your workload and are not specified here.
- A video file you are authorized to broadcast, and FFmpeg installed on the instance. Installation steps vary by operating system; check the current documentation for your EC2 image and FFmpeg build.
- A YouTube encoder stream’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to publish to that stream.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and get its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream that uses streaming software or an encoder, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS URL if offered and supported by your FFmpeg setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection using TLS/SSL; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Store the key securely and avoid putting it in shell history, shared logs, scripts accessible to other users, or public repositories. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
Build the FFmpeg command
Place the input options before -i. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping, and -re reads the input at its native frame rate rather than consuming a prerecorded file as quickly as possible. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Replace the file path, bitrate values, keyframe interval, and output URL with values appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current guidance. The URL must be the exact RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room joined to the stream key in the format expected by that URL; do not leave the placeholders in place.
Choose compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. The example command uses H.264 and AAC because those are the codecs named in the command, not because they are required for every stream. Match resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and codec to the source, the encoder’s capacity, and YouTube’s current recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. With a constant frame rate, set -g to approximately twice the frame rate for a two-second interval: for example, 60 fps corresponds to 120 frames. This is a calculation from the recommended interval, not a fixed value for every source. Set a constant bitrate and appropriate maximum rate and buffer settings rather than treating the template’s placeholders as literal FFmpeg values.
Check the network and encoder capacity
YouTube recommends leaving 20% network headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Allow for the combined video and audio bitrate, and confirm the EC2 instance can sustain the required outbound rate. If FFmpeg cannot encode at real time, reduce the encoding workload or choose an instance with more suitable compute capacity. Low-latency settings are not required simply to loop a video; YouTube notes that lower latency can increase viewer buffering.

Start the stream and verify it
- Run FFmpeg on the EC2 instance with the completed command. Watch its output for connection errors, encoding speed, and dropped or failed frames.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the encoder preview. Confirm the video and audio are correct and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Start the scheduled live event in YouTube Studio when the preview is ready. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring audio, video, and stream health while live. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- To end the broadcast, stop FFmpeg and end the event in Live Control Room. Do not assume stopping one automatically completes the other in every workflow.
What looping does—and does not—guarantee
-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to keep repeating its input. It does not establish an unlimited YouTube broadcast duration or guarantee uninterrupted operation of the EC2 instance, network, or encoder. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not infer from that guidance that a longer continuous broadcast is guaranteed to be archived. Plan to monitor the event and recover it if the process or connection stops.
For YouTube’s specific example of starting an encoder stream and going live, follow Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. AWS’s prerecorded-video example uses Amazon IVS as its destination, not YouTube. Its loop and encoding pattern may be informative, but its IVS endpoint and key are not interchangeable with YouTube’s: AWS’s Amazon IVS setup guide.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only stream material you have the rights and permissions to broadcast. A file looping successfully does not establish that its music, footage, or other content is authorized, nor does it guarantee that YouTube will leave the stream available. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and channel policies before broadcasting, especially for music, third-party footage, and repeated or reused material.
Troubleshooting
