To loop one podcast recording in OBS, add it as a Media Source and turn on Loop. For a playlist of several recordings, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. Then configure OBS to send the scene to YouTube and check the Live Control Room preview: repeating a file in OBS does not, by itself, start a YouTube broadcast.
Loop one podcast file with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene you want viewers to see. Under Sources, add a Media Source, then choose the local podcast audio or video file. OBS lists support for common formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
- Open the source properties and enable Loop. OBS will play the file again when it reaches the end.
- Set Restart playback when source becomes active separately, according to how you want playback to behave. This restarts playback when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible; it does not control whether the file repeats at its end.
- For a non-looping file, Show nothing when playback ends can control what appears when playback finishes. With Loop enabled, the file should continue repeating instead.
- If you hide the source or switch scenes, check its visibility and activation behavior. Confirm that playback starts at the point you expect when the source becomes visible.
- For video with embedded audio, check that the source’s sound registers in the OBS audio mixer and that the scene you intend to broadcast is selected. Play a representative section to verify both picture and sound.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video Source
Use VLC Video Source if the podcast is split across several files or needs VLC’s broader media support. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source to be available; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Add the VLC Video Source, select the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the last item. OBS documents these source options in its Media Sources guide.
For a single recording, Media Source is the more direct option. Choose VLC when you need a playlist or its additional format support, and account for the separate VLC installation requirement.
Send the OBS scene to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or select an encoder stream and follow YouTube’s current instructions to connect OBS using the stream destination and key. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance says encoder streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its general guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. Confirm the current requirements and interface before going live, since they can change.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Enter it in OBS as directed, but do not show it in a screen recording or share it.
- Choose OBS output settings that match your intended resolution and frame rate, and use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance. There is no single bitrate that suits every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, codec, and network capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported.
- Before making the stream public, test the full scene with representative podcast audio and video movement. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm your upload connection has enough capacity, and monitor the stream’s picture, audio, and health while live. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; see its streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common loop and stream problems
- The file plays once and stops: Reopen the source properties and check Loop for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video Source.
- Playback does not begin when you switch to the scene: For Media Source, check Restart playback when source becomes active and confirm the source is visible in the active scene. For VLC, check the source’s visibility behavior.
- VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- The picture works but there is no sound: Check whether the source’s audio appears in the OBS mixer, then listen to the YouTube preview and verify the intended scene is being sent.
- The YouTube preview or stream is unhealthy: Test with representative audio and motion, review YouTube’s stream-health messages, and check that your upload connection has the recommended headroom. Revisit YouTube’s current encoder settings for your chosen output.
