To keep original bedtime stories repeating on a YouTube Live broadcast, configure the media source in OBS—not the YouTube player’s Loop button. Use Media Source → Loop for one compiled video, or VLC Video → Loop Playlist for multiple files. OBS can keep encoding while the source repeats, so you do not need to restart OBS between stories.
Choose the right OBS source for your story files
| Your files | OBS source | Loop setting | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| One video containing all the stories | Media Source | Loop | The stories are already combined into a single file. |
| Several separate story videos | VLC Video | Loop Playlist; keep shuffle off for a fixed order | You want OBS to play individual files in sequence. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. |
The YouTube player’s Loop button repeats playback for an individual viewer; it does not make the encoder’s live output repeat. Set looping on the OBS source instead.
Set up a single compiled story video
- In OBS, open the scene that will carry the live show. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then choose OK.
- In the source properties, select the local video file. Enable Loop, then select OK.
- Keep the Media Source in the scene you will use for the broadcast. When the file reaches its end, the source is configured to play it again while OBS continues encoding.
Set up a playlist of separate story videos
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC.
- In the active scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Name the source and open its properties. Add the story files to the playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle off if the stories should play in the order you set.
- Select OK and keep the VLC Video source in the active scene during the broadcast.
These settings configure OBS to repeat the source or playlist; they do not establish that transitions will be seamless or that every system will behave identically. Check the sequence on your own setup before a public broadcast.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and preview the output
- Confirm your channel is verified and has had no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube requires both conditions for encoder streaming.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and use the stream’s Stream settings to get the connection information.
- Enter that information in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a password: it gives the encoder access to send video to your channel, so do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder feed from OBS and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the intended scene, video, and audio are present before starting the public broadcast.
- Monitor the picture and sound while live. A private or unlisted rehearsal is a useful precaution for checking the complete setup before an audience sees it.
Plan for rights, archives, and long broadcasts
Clear every element in the program
Having written the stories yourself does not automatically give you rights to background music, illustrations, or other third-party material. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party matches, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. A rights holder may cause an interruption if a match is detected. YouTube also notes that a licensed track may still cause a problem if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Make sure you have the necessary rights for every part of the broadcast.

Decide whether the archive and DVR matter
YouTube warns that it may fail to capture an archive when a stream runs longer than 12 hours. It also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including those longer than 12 hours. If preserving the recording matters, make a local recording backup and consider whether DVR is useful for your audience. A local backup is a precaution, not a requirement for looping the playlist.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The stories stop after one play: Confirm that Loop is enabled on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. The YouTube player’s Loop button is unrelated to OBS’s live output.
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC on the computer running OBS, then check the source menu again.
- Stories play in an unexpected order: Review the playlist order and turn shuffle off if you need a fixed sequence.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Check that the stream connection information in OBS matches the stream settings in Live Control Room, then verify the channel’s streaming eligibility.
- Viewers cannot hear the story or see the intended scene: Check the OBS scene and source, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before going public. Continue monitoring audio and video once live.
- The stream is interrupted after music or artwork appears: Review the rights for that element and any Content ID allowlisting requirements. Original authorship of the stories does not clear third-party additions.
Or let it run in the cloud
