For a fixed sequence of local MP4 files, the simplest practical setup is OBS Studio with its VLC Video source: add the files in order, turn on Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off. Connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream, then verify the picture, audio, and stream health in YouTube Studio. This keeps the playlist cycling only while the computer, files, power, network, and OBS remain available.

Choose the right looping method

Method Best fit Main trade-off
OBS + VLC playlist on a local computer You want free, flexible local control, overlays, scenes, or direct supervision. The computer, source files, power, network, and encoder process must stay available.
FFmpeg on a server You are comfortable with command-line setup and server maintenance. You handle restarts, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Stream-copy looping can encounter timestamp issues at loop boundaries, so verify the actual output rather than assuming the loop will be seamless.
Managed cloud encoder You want playback without leaving a home computer on. Check service cost, upload workflow, provider limits, and current plan details. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded video; the directory is not an independent reliability comparison.

This guide walks through the OBS playlist method. No method can guarantee uninterrupted uptime; consider hardware and network dependency, setup and monitoring effort, playlist editing, conversion needs, cost, and control over scenes and overlays.

Prepare YouTube Live and your media

Enable live streaming and create the event

  1. Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel. YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
  2. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to connect an encoder to your stream.

Check files and rights

  • Use video and audio that you own or have permission to broadcast. The scope and legal effect of any particular license depend on its terms.
  • Put the MP4 files in the order you want them played. Check that each has usable audio and video and note differences in resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, codecs, or audio layout that could affect transitions.
  • Keep a backup of the media files and make sure the local computer can access them for the full broadcast.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast.
  3. In the scene’s Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. Add the MP4 files in the intended sequence.
  4. In the VLC Video source properties, enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable, sequential playback.
  5. Arrange the source and audio in the scene, then check that the video is visible and the sound is audible in the OBS preview and audio mixer.

OBS’s separate Media Source is suitable when you need to loop a single file; for a playlist of multiple files, use VLC Video.

Connect OBS to YouTube and choose output settings

Configure the stream connection

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available, or enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room.
  2. In Settings > Output, choose an encoder and output bitrate that suit the source and your sustainable upload speed. Do not pick a setting just because it appears in an unrelated tutorial: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  3. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS when available.
  4. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Its table provides different recommendations for other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates. For stereo audio, the recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the current table.

Run a speed test and make sure the connection can sustain the selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement, not only a static image.

Start and verify the live feed

  1. Start streaming in OBS. In Live Control Room, confirm the preview appears and check stream health.
  2. Confirm both picture and sound, then watch the first playlist transition and at least one full cycle before relying on the stream.
  3. After changing the playlist, check transitions and stream health again. Keep backup media available in case a source file is missing or fails.

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources VLC is not installed, or its bitness does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS.
The playlist ends instead of starting over Loop Playlist is not enabled on the VLC Video source. Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
Files play in an unexpected order Shuffle Playlist is enabled or the files were added in the wrong order. Disable Shuffle Playlist and review the playlist order.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the channel may not yet have live streaming enabled. Check the URL and private key against Live Control Room, verify live access is enabled, and inspect OBS and YouTube stream status.
Video stutters or stream health is poor The selected bitrate may exceed sustainable upload capacity, or the computer may not sustain encoding. Run a speed test, compare the chosen bitrate with YouTube’s current settings table, and test again with moving video and audio.
Black frames, missing audio, or rough transitions One file may be missing or files may differ in codecs, frame rates, aspect ratios, or audio layout. Check each file and watch transitions across a full cycle; replace or prepare problematic media and recheck the stream.

Understand archives, rights, and monetization

Do not count on one complete 24-hour replay

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That rule does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will have a complete VOD archive. If a full replay matters, check YouTube’s current behavior and plan separate recording or shorter segments.

Use only content you can broadcast

Only stream video and audio that you own or have permission to broadcast. A license’s coverage depends on its terms; a continuous loop does not make unlicensed content permissible.
