If you are watching a lesson, use YouTube’s Loop control to repeat a video or playlist. That repeats playback only for you; it does not turn a video into a YouTube Live broadcast. To broadcast prerecorded lessons as a live event, a creator must send a video feed to YouTube Live using an encoder. The steps below cover both goals, plus the school-account restrictions that may affect students in India.

Choose the right feature for your goal

What you want to do Feature to use Who controls it Important limitation
Repeat one ordinary educational video Video Loop Viewer It repeats playback for you; it does not broadcast the video live.
Repeat a sequence of lessons Playlist Loop Viewer It repeats the playlist; it is not a live feed.
Pause or rewind during a live event Live DVR, if enabled and available Creator enables it; viewer uses it DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to before the stream began. YouTube’s DVR guidance explains the limits.
Broadcast prerecorded lessons as a live event An encoder sending a feed to YouTube Live Stream creator Requires eligible live-stream access and a configured encoder. A viewer’s Loop control cannot do this.
Show selected videos in a supported classroom platform Player for Education integration Teacher, school and platform provider Availability depends on the school’s tools; it is not a general playlist-loop method.

Loop an educational video while you watch

On a computer

  1. Open the video on YouTube.
  2. Right-click inside the video player.
  3. Select Loop. YouTube documents this as its repeat control for a single video: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube.

On Android

  1. Open the video’s watch screen.
  2. Tap Settings → Additional settings → Loop video.
  3. To repeat a playlist instead, start the playlist and tap Loop in the playlist control box.

For a playlist on a computer

  1. Start a video that belongs to the playlist.
  2. Expand the playlist panel.
  3. Turn on Loop in the playlist box.

On a TV or game console

  1. Play the video and show the playback controls with your remote or controller.
  2. Select Repeat until the control indicates Repeat • Currently playing for one video or Repeat • Playlist for the playlist. The option may also appear in player Settings.

YouTube’s current help page documents these device categories. For iPhone or iPad, check the current controls in the app; the documented sources do not establish a precise iOS menu path. Interface availability can vary by device and app version.

Broadcast prerecorded lessons as YouTube Live

This is a creator workflow, not a setting a student can activate from the video player. YouTube’s encoder instructions require a source feed, an encoder, and a stream configured in YouTube Studio. The guide below follows YouTube’s general workflow; the exact encoder controls depend on the encoder you choose, so use its current documentation for video and audio settings rather than assuming every encoder has the same labels.

Check that the channel can stream

  • YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
  • YouTube’s current live-streaming help page says streamers must be at least 16. Do not have a student under that minimum operate the stream. Students who only want to watch can use available viewer controls and should follow school rules.
  • Check YouTube’s current requirements before scheduling, since eligibility and interface details can change. Get started with live streaming.

Create the stream and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create a stream and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for it.
  3. In your encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and key, then configure the encoder for your source video and start sending the feed.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share it publicly.
  5. For a scheduled event, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, check the picture and sound, and start the event there when ready.

YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event, starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand, previewing before going live, and monitoring audio and video quality. These are recommendations for an encoder event, not requirements for looping a normal video. YouTube’s full process is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Use a prerecorded lesson responsibly

  • Use video, music, images and other material you have permission to broadcast. A live broadcast can still raise copyright issues; YouTube’s encoder steps do not grant rights to third-party material.
  • Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and any school or district rules before broadcasting.
  • Plan how the event will end and whether viewers need a replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in the Live area of YouTube Studio. An archive is a recording after the event, not a way to make the same event live again.

Understand live DVR and replays

DVR is not a loop function. When it is enabled, viewers may pause, rewind and resume during the live event. YouTube warns that DVR functionality may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; viewers also cannot seek back to a point before the stream started. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

After a broadcast, use the archive for replay. If you publish the replay as an ordinary video or add it to a playlist, the regular video or playlist Loop controls are the relevant way to repeat it.

What to do if a student cannot access a video or stream

School-managed accounts can behave differently from personal accounts. Google’s guidance for K–12 Google Workspace for Education describes school-managed YouTube access, including defaults under which YouTube is off for under-18 users unless enabled with parental consent, and says student accounts in the described school-account experience do not have access to live streams or live chat. This is not a claim that every Indian school account has identical settings: access depends on the school’s configuration and available features can change. If a video, live stream or control is unavailable, ask the teacher or school administrator. See Manage YouTube for Schools & Districts.

For classroom assignments, Google recommends Player for Education, an embedded player integrated with supported education technology tools. Google describes it as a simplified experience without ads or recommendations. Ask whether your school’s platform supports it; this is a classroom viewing option, not a promised Loop control. More information is available at YouTube for Teachers.

Common problems and fixes

  • Loop does not appear: Confirm you are using the video’s player controls rather than expecting a live stream to repeat. On supported devices, use the documented Loop or Repeat control; on a school-managed account, ask whether the school has restricted YouTube access.
  • A playlist stops after one pass: Start a video that belongs to the playlist and enable Loop in the playlist control box. On Android, YouTube says tapping Loop again changes it to repeat one video within the playlist, indicated by a “1” on the loop icon.
  • The live event does not show an encoder preview: Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key for the correct YouTube stream, then verify the encoder is running and the stream is selected in Live Control Room.
  • The live stream is unavailable to a student: This may be due to account eligibility or school settings rather than the viewer’s Loop setting. Check with the teacher or administrator and review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements.
  • A viewer cannot rewind to the beginning: DVR cannot seek to before a live stream began, and DVR may be limited on events longer than 12 hours. Use the published archive after the event if one is available.
