You can use VLC’s documented VLM feature to loop a broadcast playlist, and VLC can send media output over a network. However, the official VLC and YouTube instructions do not provide a complete, verified setup for looping an MP4 in VLC and sending that continuous output to YouTube Live. Treat a direct VLC configuration as version-dependent experimentation—not a guaranteed recipe—and test it privately before relying on it.

YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is clear: create or select a stream in Live Control Room, enter its stream URL and key in encoder software, start the encoder, then check the preview and stream health. Below are the supported pieces, the settings to check, and a cloud option if you need an uploaded video to keep running without leaving a computer on.

What VLC can—and cannot—do here

VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 desktop guide describes a stream-output pipeline that can process media VLC can read and save the result as a file or send it over a network. The pipeline can include transcoding. That establishes VLC’s general streaming capability, but it does not document YouTube’s ingest requirements or a complete VLC-to-YouTube procedure. VideoLAN’s stream-output guide

For looping, VideoLAN documents a VLM broadcast option: when a broadcast’s input list reaches its final item, the loop option restarts the list. This is different from clicking VLC’s ordinary repeat control while playing a file. The documentation does not establish that ordinary playback repeat keeps an outbound network stream alive. Create or select a stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select a scheduled stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter them in the encoder’s corresponding server and key fields. Use the exact URL provided in Live Control Room; do not guess or substitute one.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as a password-like credential. Do not share screenshots that show an active key. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder; YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key. YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings

For standard RTMP/RTMPS workflows, YouTube recommends RTMPS where the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; copy the exact RTMPS address from Live Control Room rather than constructing one yourself. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Use YouTube’s published encoder settings as a target

These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee that VLC can produce a compatible feed through every version or configuration. Match the resolution and frame rate to the source and choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain.

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended

YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Those are YouTube’s published settings, not evidence of a tested VLC configuration. Review the full current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Build and test the VLC configuration cautiously

VLC’s documented components give you a basis for experimentation, not a verified recipe. Exact controls depend on your VLC version and operating system; the VLC guide cited here covers version 3.0. If you need a reliable, supported setup for an event, use an encoder with a documented YouTube workflow instead of assuming VLC’s general network output will work with YouTube.

  • Durable USB Capture Card: The aluminum alloy casing easily dissipates heat and is lightweight while effectively shielding against EMI, ensuring stable signal transmission. The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
  1. Choose the loop mechanism. If you are building a VLM broadcast, use its documented loop behavior to restart the broadcast’s input list at the end. Do not assume the ordinary repeat button loops the outbound stream.
  2. Configure output for the target ingest. VLC’s stream-output documentation explains the general pipeline, including network output and optional transcoding. You must verify that your VLC build’s protocol, mux, codecs, bitrate, and keyframe controls can meet YouTube’s requirements; the official VLC instructions do not supply a complete YouTube configuration.
  3. Connect using the values from Live Control Room. Put the exact stream URL and key into the encoder’s server and key fields. Never put the key in a public post or share it in a screenshot.
  4. Start a private or unlisted test first. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives the feed before making a scheduled broadcast public. YouTube Help: encoder settings
  5. Test the loop boundary and the actual content. Let the MP4 reach its end and confirm that the next loop begins while the YouTube feed remains connected. Use representative motion and audio: a static or silent segment can conceal bitrate, sound, or transition problems.
  6. Monitor Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health, and listen to or watch the feed. A successful initial connection alone does not show that the stream will remain healthy through repeated playback.
  7. End the broadcast deliberately. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that archive behavior as a substitute for ending a broadcast. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom What to check
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Confirm the channel is eligible, the encoder is running, and the stream URL and key were copied from the selected Live Control Room stream into the correct fields. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
The feed appears, but YouTube reports poor stream health Check the selected codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Ensure the upload connection can sustain the bitrate, then retest with moving video and audio.
The MP4 repeats in VLC, but the YouTube feed ends Ordinary playback repeat is not documented as maintaining an outbound feed. Check whether the configuration is a VLM broadcast using its broadcast-list loop option, and test whether the network output stays connected at the end of the input.
The output settings do not match YouTube’s ingest The official VLC documentation reviewed does not specify a complete YouTube-compatible protocol, mux, and codec setup. Check the documentation for your exact VLC build and use an encoder with a documented YouTube workflow if the combination cannot be verified.
