To loop a white-noise video on YouTube Live overnight, add the file to OBS Studio as a Media Source, enable Loop in its properties, and send OBS to a YouTube Live stream using the stream URL and stream key. The file repeats at the encoder; YouTube’s watch-page Loop option only repeats playback for an individual viewer.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer, and a local white-noise video file. OBS supports common formats including MP4 and MOV. Your file must contain audio if you want the stream to carry white noise.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for your chosen encoder settings. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; a network disruption can break the stream. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and connection planning.
- Permission to stream the video and its audio. Technical setup does not grant rights to use a recording, sound effect or other media.
A computer running software such as OBS is one option, not a universal requirement: YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders. Choose equipment that supports your file and looping workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes both approaches.
Set up the overnight loop in OBS
- Create a scene. Open OBS and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- Add the video. In the scene’s Sources area, select + → Media Source. Create a new source, browse to the white-noise video file and add it. OBS documents the Media Source options in its Media Sources guide.
- Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. This makes OBS restart the file when playback finishes. Confirm the preview shows the intended image and that the audio meter responds while the white noise plays.
- Choose a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server configuration, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it.
- Check encoder output settings. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance to select a supported codec, resolution and bitrate that fit your upload connection. There is no single bitrate required just because the image is static; the audio and chosen video settings still matter. The basic loop does not require HDR or HLS.
- Test before the overnight session. Start the OBS stream, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, and verify both picture and sound. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and monitor the output before relying on it overnight. Follow YouTube’s recommendation to retain connection headroom.
- Start the broadcast. Follow the Live Control Room workflow to take the stream live. Leave the computer, OBS and network connection running for the duration; if any of them stops or the connection drops, the broadcast may end.
Do not confuse viewer looping with a live broadcast loop
YouTube’s player Loop control repeats a video for the person watching it; it does not send that video as a live broadcast. An actual YouTube Live stream needs an encoder to continuously send its output. For this setup, OBS loops the local file and sends the resulting stream to YouTube. Plan for overnight reliability and the recording
Test and monitor rather than assuming it will stay live
Looping prevents the media file from simply ending, but it cannot prevent a computer shutdown, OBS failure, power loss or internet disruption. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings, checking stream health, monitoring audio and video, and leaving bandwidth headroom. Those precautions reduce avoidable problems; they do not guarantee an uninterrupted overnight broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Be careful with streams lasting 12 hours or more
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation does not promise a complete automatic archive for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. If keeping a full recording matters, plan a session shorter than 12 hours or make a separate local recording. YouTube’s encoder setup page describes the archive limit.
Troubleshooting
