To repeat a video while streaming to YouTube Live, loop the file as an input, pace it in real time, and send it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Those steps keep the video repeating; they do not guarantee an interruption-free connection. FFmpeg can also attempt to recover from some temporary output failures, but a reconnect may still be visible to viewers.

What “looping without interrupting” means

There are two separate jobs: repeating the media and maintaining the stream connection. A loop makes the source continue after it reaches its end. Output recovery can help FFmpeg resume after certain temporary failures. Neither prevents every interruption caused by a broken network, a stopped FFmpeg process, or an ingest-side problem.

The simplest approach for a recording with its own audio is to loop the whole input with -stream_loop -1. That repeats the file’s video and audio together. The loop video filter is a different tool: it repeats buffered video frames, so audio needs its own loop or synchronization plan.

Prepare YouTube Live and the source file

Get the destination details

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password; if you reset it, update the value FFmpeg uses.
  3. Confirm that the account and live event are ready to accept an encoder feed before starting FFmpeg.

Check the recording and your connection

  • Check that the file has the audio and video tracks you expect. The example below assumes one file containing both.
  • Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that the source and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube publishes bitrate guidance by codec, resolution, and frame rate in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  • Use content you have the rights to stream. A technically healthy feed does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the recording.
  • Run a test with representative motion and audio before relying on the setup for a live event.

Loop a complete file with FFmpeg

This Bash example loops the entire input file, reads it at its native rate, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV feed to YouTube. Replace the file path, bitrate, server URL, and key with values appropriate to your recording and YouTube event. It is an example to adapt, not a universal command for every file or FFmpeg build.

STREAM_KEY='YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY'

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Use the actual server URL and key provided for your event; do not publish them. In this example, the URL is shown schematically, and the shell variable is declared to illustrate safe handling rather than used to assemble the destination. To use the variable in Bash, construct the destination from your actual server URL and ${STREAM_KEY}, and avoid saving the expanded key in a publicly readable script or log.

Understand the options that matter

  • -re tells FFmpeg to read the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful when sending file content as a live feed. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so place input options such as -re and -stream_loop before that input’s -i. Do not use low read rates this way with actual capture devices or live inputs; FFmpeg warns that this can cause packet loss. See FFmpeg Documentation.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. Because it loops the complete file, audio and video repeat together when both are present in that input.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac encode video and audio. The example’s video bitrate and audio bitrate are starting values, not YouTube requirements. Pick settings from YouTube’s published guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and verify that your upload can sustain the total outgoing bitrate.
  • At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; match the keyframe interval to the frame rate you choose. The example sets a two-second interval at 30 fps. For other frame rates, adjust -g and -keyint_min accordingly.
  • -f flv selects the output format used in this RTMP/RTMPS-style example. YouTube recommends RTMPS; follow the protocol and server address provided by YouTube for the event.

Choose a loop method that fits the media

Whole-input looping

Use -stream_loop -1 when you want a file’s audio and video to repeat as a unit. It is usually the most direct choice for a self-contained recording. The transition is determined by the end and beginning of the file: FFmpeg does not make the content blend smoothly across that boundary.

Video-frame looping with the loop filter

The documented loop video filter repeats buffered frames. Its loop=-1 setting means repeat indefinitely; size sets the number of frames buffered, and start chooses the first frame. It affects video frames, not the audio track. If you use it, decide separately how audio should behave and check synchronization at each boundary. See the FFmpeg Filters Documentation.

Attempt recovery after temporary output failures

Looping the source does not reconnect a failed output. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes this RTMP recovery example:

The FIFO options configure an attempt to recover from certain temporary output failures and continue processing in real time. They are not a guarantee that viewers will see no gap, that YouTube will preserve event continuity, or that every failure can be recovered. Dropping packets on overflow also means some data may be discarded. The example in the FFmpeg-devel mailing list is at FFmpeg-devel, March 2024; verify that the options are supported by your installed FFmpeg version and build before using them.

Start, test, and monitor the stream

  1. Check the installed build with ffmpeg -version. If an option is unavailable, consult that build’s help and documentation rather than assuming all installations behave identically.
  2. Start the command and watch FFmpeg’s console output for input, encoding, or connection errors.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream-health messages. Confirm that the loop reaches its boundary and restarts as expected.
  4. Test the actual file, settings, and network conditions you intend to use. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health during it.
  5. If you change the source, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or stream key, test the updated configuration again.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg exits when the file ends The input is not configured to repeat. For a whole-file loop, place -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i. For a frame-filter loop, check the filter’s frame count and plan audio separately.
The feed runs too quickly or YouTube sees irregular pacing File-to-live pacing or output capacity. For a file input, put -re before its -i. Check that the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Do not apply low read rates to a real live or capture input.
YouTube does not receive the feed Destination details, event readiness, protocol, or connectivity. Recheck the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm the key has not been reset, and verify the RTMPS destination and network access.
Video or audio is rejected, missing, or unstable Codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or track mapping. Compare the outgoing settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and inspect the source’s actual streams. Adapt the example rather than assuming its codec and bitrate fit your file.
Audio drifts or cuts awkwardly at the loop boundary Separate video-frame looping, source timing, or a non-matching file boundary. Prefer whole-input looping when the audio and video should repeat together. If filtering video frames, design and test the audio loop separately; a hard file boundary may remain audible.
The stream stops after a connection failure Output recovery, network loss, process exit, or ingest-side failure. Check FFmpeg’s error output and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Confirm FIFO recovery options are supported by the installed build. Recovery is an attempt for some temporary failures, not an uninterrupted-delivery guarantee.
