You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from Ubuntu with GStreamer, but the loop itself needs explicit control: the GStreamer documentation cited here does not establish a built-in single-file repeat option or a tested, ready-to-run YouTube pipeline. First configure YouTube-compatible encoding and verify RTMPS output on your Ubuntu installation; for a dependable continuous loop, put repeat and recovery logic in a GStreamer application rather than assuming a one-line launcher command will handle it.
What you need before streaming
- An Ubuntu system with GStreamer command-line tools and the required plug-ins. The GStreamer project identifies
gstreamer1.0-toolsas the Debian/Ubuntu package for its tools; package versions and plug-in availability vary by Ubuntu release. The Ubuntu Noble package page, for example, lists version 1.24.2-1ubuntu0.1, which should not be generalized to other releases. - A prerecorded video with an audio/video format your installed GStreamer plug-ins can decode and encode.
- A reliable upload connection with capacity above the stream’s total bitrate.
- A YouTube stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password; do not put it in source control, shared logs, screenshots, or shell-history examples.
Choose YouTube-compatible stream settings
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as encoder protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it must not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not independent performance-test results. The figures are YouTube’s settings guidance; the page does not state a publication year. Select the resolution and frame rate your connection and machine can sustain, rather than choosing the highest setting automatically. Get the stream URL and key from YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Open the stream settings and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so confirm that the selected URL uses RTMPS.
- Provide the URL and key to your encoder using a secret-safe method. Do not publish or share the key; reset it in Live Control Room if you believe it has been exposed.

Prepare GStreamer on Ubuntu
- Install the GStreamer command-line tools using your Ubuntu release’s package manager. The documented Debian/Ubuntu package name for the tools is
gstreamer1.0-tools; make sure the relevant source, decoder, encoder, muxer, and network-sink plug-ins are also installed for your media and target settings. - Check the installed GStreamer version and available elements with the tools provided by your distribution. In particular, confirm that
rtmpsinkis present before designing around it. The element is documented in GStreamer’s Bad Plug-ins set, and documentation alone does not confirm that your particular Ubuntu build can connect to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. - Test file decoding and local playback or encoding before adding network output. GStreamer tutorials use elements such as
uridecodebinandx264encto illustrate decoding and encoding; they do not constitute a complete YouTube-ready pipeline.

Build the stream pipeline—and account for the loop
A typical GStreamer streaming pipeline has four jobs: decode the input file, encode video and audio in YouTube-compatible formats, mux the encoded tracks into FLV, and send the result to the RTMP-family endpoint. GStreamer documents flvmux followed by rtmpsink as an RTMP-output pattern. That documentation does not prove that an installed Ubuntu build supports the required RTMPS connection, or that a particular pipeline works with your file and stream settings. Treat a pipeline assembled from these elements as illustrative until you test it on your own release and media.

The key complication is repeating a single file. The GStreamer pages for multifilesrc and splitmuxsrc cover, respectively, numbered file sequences and parts created by splitmuxsink; neither demonstrates indefinite replay of an ordinary MP4 or other single video. Do not assume that adding rtmpsink makes the input loop, or that reaching the end of a file will restart the stream.
For a quick pipeline experiment
Use gst-launch-1.0 to validate individual decoding, encoding, muxing, and network-output stages. Avoid placing a real stream key in a published command or a command that could be captured in shell history or logs. Do not rely on a guessed single-file loop property: the official pages cited here do not establish one.

For a continuous production stream
Put loop control in a small application using the GStreamer API, or use a separately verified looping source or pipeline design. The application must handle reaching end-of-stream, restarting playback, maintaining audio/video synchronization at the boundary, and reconnecting if the network stream fails. The documentation cited here does not verify exact API calls, seamless boundary behavior, or automatic recovery for a particular implementation, so test those behaviors with your file, plug-ins, and YouTube endpoint before relying on them.

- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with representative audio and motion, not just a static frame or silent clip.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, and confirm that picture and sound are both present and synchronized.
- Verify that the Ubuntu machine’s outbound bandwidth has the recommended 20% headroom above the total configured bitrate.
- Let the test run across at least one file boundary. Confirm that playback restarts as intended and that the stream remains healthy; the GStreamer reference material does not guarantee seamless looping.
- Monitor audio and video while streaming. When the event is over, stop the encoder rather than leaving an unintended stream running.

Troubleshoot common failures
