To loop a school open-day replay on YouTube Live, send a scheduled YouTube stream to an encoder that can play the recording repeatedly. YouTube receives the encoder feed; the encoder—not a universal YouTube loop switch—creates the repeat. Schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, connect it with the stream URL and key, enable looping in the encoder, then test the full cycle before the event.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
  • The open-day recording as a playable video file, plus software or hardware that can play a local media source and repeat it. YouTube supports encoder-based streams; the repeat control depends on the encoder you choose. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate, preferably with at least 20% bandwidth headroom. Shared school networks may have less capacity available during busy periods. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth planning.
  • A local recording or archive copy as a backup, and a plan for who will monitor the stream while it is live.

YouTube says streamers under 16 may be subject to limitations, including for streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult. School consent, safeguarding and district rules depend on the institution and jurisdiction; check the applicable policies before broadcasting students.

Set up the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation workflow and create or schedule an encoder stream. Enter the title, description and intended visibility: public, private or unlisted. Use the watch page and access checks to ensure the chosen setting reaches the intended audience. Unlisted relies on sharing its link; it should not be treated as secure access control. YouTube’s live-stream settings guide covers stream options.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it could send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions show the connection workflow.
  3. Choose the stream resolution, frame rate and bitrate supported by your source, encoder and upload connection. Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen format rather than guessing or setting a bitrate your network cannot sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings table lists recommended resolutions and bitrates.
  4. Decide whether to enable DVR in the stream settings. With DVR on, viewers can pause and rewind during the live stream when supported; with it off, viewers cannot seek backward during the broadcast, though the completed recording may still be watched afterward. Very long streams can have DVR limitations. YouTube’s DVR guidance explains the behavior.

Make the replay repeat in your encoder

  1. Add the open-day video to the encoder as a media source or playlist item. Confirm that it plays with the expected picture and sound.
  2. Enable the encoder’s repeat or loop option for the source or playlist. The location and name of this control vary by encoder; YouTube does not provide one universal “loop replay” switch for encoder streams.
  3. Run the recording through a complete cycle, including the transition from its end back to the beginning. Look for a pause, black frame, frozen image, abrupt audio cut or silence. If the replay contains several clips, test the transitions between each one as well.
  4. Check the stream preview in Live Control Room, then open the watch page as a viewer and test on a phone or tablet. Verify that the intended audience can access it and that audio and video remain synchronized. YouTube recommends testing in advance and checking audience access across devices. YouTube’s live-stream tips include preparation and access checks.
  5. Start a local recording in the encoder or other suitable recording setup. Confirm that the file is growing during the test; do not rely solely on the YouTube archive.

Prepare and run the event

Before the scheduled start

YouTube recommends preparing the encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Use that lead time to confirm that Live Control Room shows the incoming preview and that the watch page works for the intended audience. YouTube’s preparation guidance gives these timings.

While the replay is live

  • Keep an operator available to monitor the picture, sound, stream status and repeating transition.
  • Check that the local recording is still active and its file continues to grow.
  • If the school network is shared, watch for quality warnings or interruptions that may indicate insufficient upload capacity.

When the event ends

Stop the stream through the encoder and YouTube workflow as appropriate, then confirm the archive appears in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep the local backup until you have checked the archive. YouTube’s archive guidance describes this limit.

Choose software or hardware encoding

For a prerecorded school replay, the essential capability is reliable playback and repeat—not a particular class of encoder. YouTube lists software and hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Consider the operator’s experience, session length, ability to repeat a media source, network conditions and available support before choosing. Hardware is not established as necessary just to loop an existing video. YouTube’s streaming tips discuss encoder preparation.

Troubleshooting common problems

The stream appears on YouTube, but the replay stops

Looping is controlled by the encoder’s playback source or playlist. Recheck its repeat setting, confirm the correct media source is selected, and test through the end-to-start transition. If using a playlist, verify that repeat applies to the entire playlist rather than only the current item.

Live Control Room does not show a preview

Confirm the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key shown for the scheduled event, that the key has not been changed, and that the encoder is actually streaming. Re-enter the current credentials if needed; reset a compromised key rather than continuing to use it. See YouTube’s encoder connection steps.

The stream buffers or loses quality

Check the encoder’s outgoing bitrate against available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the bitrate requirement; a shared school connection may not consistently provide its advertised capacity. Lower the outgoing bitrate or resolution if necessary, then test again. Consult YouTube’s bandwidth advice and recommended encoder settings.

Viewers cannot pause or rewind

Check whether DVR is enabled for the stream. DVR can be limited or unavailable for very long streams; with DVR disabled, viewers cannot rewind within the live broadcast. YouTube’s DVR instructions explain the setting.

The YouTube archive is missing

Check the stream duration and retain the local recording. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an automatic archive, so do not make YouTube’s archive the only copy of a long event. YouTube’s archive guidance covers the duration condition.
