You can loop a prerecorded nature video into YouTube Live by running FFmpeg on a computer or server, repeating the file as an input, and sending the output to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Your channel must be eligible for live streaming, and the machine running FFmpeg and its internet connection must stay available for the broadcast. This guide covers setup, recommended settings, testing, copyright checks and what to expect from the archive.

Before you start: check your channel and source video

Confirm live-stream eligibility

YouTube encoder streaming requires live streaming to be enabled on a verified channel. YouTube also says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help before scheduling a broadcast; availability or review time can vary by channel.

Prepare the video and audio

Have the nature video available as a local file that FFmpeg can read. Check that it has the picture and sound you intend to stream, and note its container, video codec, audio codec, resolution and frame rate. A file that plays locally is not automatically suitable for every stream-copy setup; if its streams are incompatible with YouTube’s recommended workflow, encoding them to H.264 video and AAC audio is the conventional option.

Use footage and audio you own or have permission to livestream. A license should cover public streaming, territory, duration and monetization if relevant, as well as any third-party music or other elements. YouTube scans all live streams for third-party content and may replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt it. If a rights owner has licensed content to you, YouTube says the owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to proceed without interruption. Permission, Creative Commons terms, applicable exceptions, YouTube Audio Library and Creator Music are possible routes to lawful use, but none guarantees avoiding a claim or strike; see YouTube’s copyright guidance and copyright issues with live streams.

In India, the Copyright Act, 1957 includes visual recordings and accompanying sound recordings in its definition of a cinematograph film and defines communication to the public broadly. This is a practical rights reminder, not legal advice or a full analysis of Indian copyright exceptions. Labels such as “nature,” “ambient,” “royalty-free” or “public domain” are not substitutes for checking the actual rights and license terms.

Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
  2. In Live Control Room, create or select a stream and choose the encoder workflow. Set visibility to private or unlisted for an initial test if appropriate.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the RTMPS URL when YouTube provides it. The exact labels can vary with the Studio interface.
  4. Keep the key private. It is a credential that allows someone to broadcast to your stream; do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot or message. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP, for encoder ingestion. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Configure FFmpeg to repeat the file and send it live

Understand the command before running it

FFmpeg reads inputs and writes outputs according to the options and URLs you give it. Option placement matters: input options apply to the next input, while output options apply to the output that follows. The FFmpeg documentation describes this command-line model at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html. Because the exact loop-and-RTMPS behavior can depend on the FFmpeg build and input, validate your command with the installed version rather than assuming a generic command is tested for your setup.

  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

At a high level, the command needs to repeat the local file as an input, select compatible audio and video handling, and send the result to YouTube’s stream URL with the stream key included in the manner supported by your FFmpeg build. Do not paste a real key into a publicly visible command example. Store it in a private script or environment-specific configuration, restrict access to that file, and avoid exposing it in shell history or logs.

Choose encoding or stream-copy deliberately

With re-encoding, FFmpeg decodes and encodes the media into a chosen output format. This can make an otherwise incompatible source fit the stream settings, but it uses CPU resources and the output settings must be chosen correctly. With stream-copy, FFmpeg passes the existing audio and video streams through without re-encoding, reducing encoding work, but it only makes sense if the source streams and output container/protocol are compatible. The source file’s codec and container determine which approach is viable; inspect them and test the result in Live Control Room.

Use YouTube-compatible video and audio settings

For a conventional SDR stream, use H.264 video and AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds. YouTube’s recommendation is no longer than four seconds. YouTube lists H.264 bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate; the following are platform recommendations, not guarantees for every network or source:

Output format YouTube H.264 recommendation
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps

The full supported settings and current bitrate table are on YouTube’s encoder settings page. The upload connection must sustain the selected bitrate throughout the stream; leave headroom for normal network variation and other devices using the connection. Nature footage has no special bitrate exemption in the recommendations. If the available upload is unstable, choose a lower supported output rather than a bitrate the connection cannot maintain.

YouTube’s encoder settings page also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Do not confuse YouTube’s separate DASH ingestion requirements with a simple RTMP(S) encoder feed: its DASH specification has distinct track, closed-GOP and segment requirements. The DASH requirements are not settings to paste into an RTMPS command; see Google’s DASH delivery specification if you are implementing DASH specifically.

Test the broadcast and monitor it while live

  1. Start FFmpeg with the stream URL and key for the selected encoder stream.
  2. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and inspect stream health. Confirm that the image moves, the audio is present and in sync, and there are no warnings about bitrate or connection stability.
  3. Watch the local FFmpeg output for errors and monitor the computer’s network connection and resource use. A stopped process, computer shutdown, sleep setting, power loss or network interruption can stop the feed.
  4. When the test is correct, end it deliberately in the way shown by the current Live Control Room workflow, then begin the intended broadcast with the correct visibility and title.

A basic FFmpeg process does not by itself establish automatic restart or failover. If you need unattended operation, plan how you will notice a process or connection failure and restart it, and test that recovery arrangement before relying on it.

What happens when the stream ends—and what YouTube archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a complete archive for an indefinite stream or one that runs longer than 12 hours. If the recording matters, end the broadcast before that threshold and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. The archive is separate from your local source file, so keep an original copy of footage you want to preserve.

Copyright detection can affect both the live broadcast and its archive. YouTube’s live-stream guidance says detected third-party content can trigger a placeholder or interruption, and archived streams may also receive Content ID claims. Read YouTube’s live copyright guidance before using third-party material.

Local FFmpeg versus running it on a remote server

Consideration Local computer Remote VPS or server
What must stay on The computer running FFmpeg and its network connection. The remote server and its network connection; your home computer need not run FFmpeg once the job is set up.
Upload path Uses your local internet connection, so its sustained upload capacity matters. Uses the server’s connection; setup and network behavior depend on the provider and configuration.
Operational work Requires keeping the computer awake, powered and connected, and handling local process failures. Requires server setup, secure handling of the stream key and monitoring or recovery arrangements.
Cost No hosting charge if you use equipment and connectivity you already have, though electricity and internet costs still apply. Hosting is an additional recurring cost; no specific provider or price is established here.

A remote server does not automatically solve FFmpeg configuration, copyright, key security or recovery. Choose it only if you are comfortable operating a server and have checked its cost and network suitability.
