To loop a playlist file forever in FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to, then encode and send the output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. An .m3u extension alone does not tell you whether the file is compatible with FFmpeg’s playlist input: the command below uses the concat demuxer’s text-list format, not an arbitrary M3U file.
Use the right playlist format
A local playlist is a way to tell FFmpeg which media files to read. YouTube HLS ingestion is a different protocol that sends media segments and a rolling playlist to YouTube. Do not treat a local music playlist as an HLS playlist just because its filename ends in .m3u.
The command below expects playlist.txt to be in the concat demuxer’s file-list format. It is a command shape, not a tested, universal command; check compatibility against your installed FFmpeg build and your actual media files.
Prepare the media list and YouTube destination
Check the playlist entries
- Confirm that each entry points to a file the FFmpeg process can open. Entries may be local paths or URLs; paths must be valid from the machine running FFmpeg.
- Use the concat demuxer’s expected file-list syntax. An ordinary M3U file is not necessarily a valid concat list, and the available technical guidance does not establish that every M3U dialect works as FFmpeg input.
- Check that successive files’ codecs and timestamps can be joined cleanly. Differences can cause playback or transition problems even when each file plays by itself.
- Quote paths with spaces or special characters as required by the playlist syntax; shell quoting and playlist-file quoting are separate concerns.
Get the ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current ingest URL and stream key for your stream. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it in a public script or leave it exposed in shared logs.

Run FFmpeg with infinite looping
For a concat-format text list containing media with both audio and video, a starting command is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS ingest URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. This example assumes a suitable concat list and inputs that can be encoded as H.264 video and AAC audio; it does not guarantee that every file list, FFmpeg build, or YouTube workflow will work without adjustment.

What the important options do
-rereads file input at a real-time rate instead of sending a file as fast as the machine can process it.-stream_loop -1requests infinite looping. It is an input option, so put it before the-ifor the input you want to repeat. Zero means no looping;-1means loop indefinitely.-f concatselects FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, and-safe 0permits paths beyond the concat demuxer’s restricted safe-path rules. Use that option only with playlist entries you trust.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio, while-f flvselects the output container used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example.
FFmpeg’s option placement matters when there is more than one input: put -stream_loop -1 immediately before the relevant input so it applies to that input, rather than another one.
If the playlist has no video
The example expects video as well as audio. If your files contain audio only, add a suitable video input, such as a static image, and explicitly map the intended audio and video streams. YouTube’s ordinary live-stream route expects an encoded live stream; whether audio-only input is accepted in a particular account and workflow is not established here, so do not assume it will work without confirming in your current setup.

Match YouTube’s live encoder guidance
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, checked on 2026-10-03; choose video resolution and bitrate for your stream and available upload connection rather than treating one setting as right for every channel. YouTube automatically transcodes live input for viewer formats.
Test with representative audio and video, then check YouTube’s stream health. A short test can reveal missing video, silent audio, bad transitions, a wrong key, or an ingest problem before you rely on the stream.

Do not confuse this with YouTube HLS ingestion
YouTube’s HLS option is for encoders that send HLS, not for passing a local song list to FFmpeg. YouTube’s current HLS instructions, checked on 2026-10-03, specify 1–4 second segments in TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. An .m3u suffix alone does not satisfy these transport and playlist requirements.
Preflight and troubleshoot the stream
Before relying on a long-running broadcast
- Confirm the playlist format and verify that FFmpeg can open every referenced file or URL.
- Start a short private or unlisted test using the intended command and representative media.
- Check that playback advances across a playlist boundary, audio continues, video reaches the viewer if your setup requires it, and YouTube reports healthy ingest.
- Verify that the stream key and RTMPS endpoint are the current values from Live Control Room, and that the key is not exposed publicly.
- Observe the process and connection during the test; a successful start alone does not establish uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Common problems and fixes
- The loop ends instead of repeating: place
-stream_loop -1before the playlist’s-i. Check that it is attached to the intended input. - FFmpeg rejects the playlist: confirm it uses the concat demuxer’s required file-list format. Do not assume a regular M3U can be read as concat input; convert or create a list in the expected format.
- A file cannot be opened: check each path or URL from the FFmpeg machine, permissions, spelling, and required quoting for spaces or special characters.
- Playback breaks at a file boundary: inspect whether adjacent files have compatible codecs and timestamps, and test the transition with the actual list and FFmpeg build.
- YouTube does not receive a healthy stream: recheck the ingest URL, stream key, output encoding and connectivity; monitor YouTube’s stream-health status during a test.
- The connection drops: FFmpeg documents FIFO options for attempting recovery after temporary network failures. They do not guarantee reconnection or uninterrupted playback; configure and test recovery in your own environment.
- There is audio but no picture: confirm the inputs include video. If not, add a suitable video input and explicitly map audio and video; do not assume the example creates a visual stream for audio-only files.
- You are using HLS: implement YouTube’s separate segment, rolling-playlist, transport, and request requirements rather than relying on the local playlist command.
Copyright and channel eligibility
Only stream recordings you have the rights and permissions to broadcast. Having a track in a local playlist does not establish that you may retransmit it on YouTube. Copyright claims or platform enforcement can disrupt or restrict a broadcast. Also consider YouTube’s policies on reused content if you intend to monetize a channel: technical ability to loop files is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility. Review the current YouTube rules that apply to your content and account before broadcasting; specific licensing rights for playlist tracks are not determined by this setup guide.
