To loop recorded sermons on YouTube Live, create an FFconcat playlist in playback order and pass it to FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1. The method works best when every file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and accurate duration metadata. FFmpeg then encodes the playlist as a continuous live output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
Before you start
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the H.264 encoder
libx264and AAC audio encoding. Available encoders depend on how FFmpeg was built. - Keep sermon files on storage that will remain connected and available throughout the broadcast. A removable drive or computer that sleeps can interrupt playback.
- Confirm the files have compatible streams and reliable duration metadata. The concat demuxer requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases; it does not make mismatched sources compatible for you. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.
- Have a YouTube channel and the stream URL and key for the stream you will use. Retrieve them from Live Control Room; treat the key like a password.
- Check that the computer can encode the selected output and that its internet connection can sustain the bitrate with headroom.
1. Create the sermon playlist
Place the files in a stable directory and make a plain-text playlist named, for example, sermon-playlist.ffconcat. List each file in the intended order:

file 'sermon-03.mp4'The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading text or byte-order mark, so FFmpeg can recognize the format automatically. Paths with spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping. Relative paths in the playlist’s working directory are generally simplest.
The concat demuxer uses safe-path checks by default. It accepts portable relative paths but rejects absolute paths, protocol-like paths, and components beginning with a period. If you need absolute paths, -safe 0 relaxes those checks. Use it only for a playlist you trust; do not add it when safe relative paths are sufficient.

2. Check file compatibility and transitions
Match streams, codecs, and time bases
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Check for differences such as one sermon having no audio track, stereo audio in one file and a different layout in another, or video encoded with different formats or parameters. A playlist that violates these assumptions can fail or produce playback and timestamp problems.
If the sources do not match, either normalize them to a common set of dimensions, frame rate, video and audio codecs, audio layout, and time base before using the demuxer, or use a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes the material. FFmpeg distinguishes the concat demuxer from the concat filter: the latter is intended for cases where re-encoding is needed. A filter workflow requires a different command and more processing, so do not assume the simple playlist command below will handle mismatches automatically.
Check duration and timestamps
The demuxer places each file after the preceding one using duration information. If a duration is wrong—for example, because a file is truncated or its duration estimate is inaccurate—FFmpeg warns that artifacts can result. Files with different audio and video lengths can also leave gaps as timestamps are adjusted across the playlist.

Before streaming, run the playlist through at least one full cycle locally. Check audio continuity and levels, aspect ratio, the transition from the last sermon back to the first, and any black frames or silence. This rehearsal is an operational check, not a guarantee that every playlist will behave identically on air.
3. Choose output settings for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. The example command below uses H.264 and AAC. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps as recommended bitrates. These are guidance values, not proof that your computer or connection can sustain them. YouTube advises choosing a quality that fits reliable upload capacity; its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload headroom. Account for other traffic using the connection as well.

Set the GOP length to match the fixed output frame rate and a two-second keyframe interval: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 50 frames at 25 fps. The buffer size and bitrate should also be chosen for the output and encoder. Do not copy placeholder values into a live command; replace them with numbers suitable for your setup.
4. Start the looping live output
Use this as a template, not a universal tested command. Replace the bitrate, buffer, GOP, and destination with values and connection details for your stream. Run it from the directory containing the playlist if you use relative paths.

Confirm behavior on your installed FFmpeg build and rehearse the complete setup.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. It must appear before the playlist input;-1means infinite looping. Omit it for safe relative paths.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode the outgoing video and audio. Re-encoding creates a consistent output but uses processing capacity and can affect quality. Check that your FFmpeg build includes the required encoder.-f flvsets the output container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest. Use the exact server URL and key format displayed in Live Control Room; do not rely on an old endpoint copied from another guide.
Some configurations append the stream key to the base ingest URL. Protect the completed destination where practical: command-line arguments may appear in shell history or process listings. Never include a real key in a public transcript, screenshot, or source repository. YouTube explains stream URL and key controls in Manage live stream settings; reset the key in Live Control Room if it is exposed.

5. Connect through YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube, create or select the live stream and open its Live Control Room settings. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and key provided for that stream into your FFmpeg destination configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; use the RTMPS URL when it is available for your stream. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled stream, review the preview and then select Go live when ready.
- Watch stream health and messages, and check that both audio and video are arriving as expected. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream.
YouTube’s current help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the planned continuous broadcast will exceed 12 hours, plan around session limits and archive continuity rather than assuming YouTube will accept one indefinitely running event.
Preflight checklist
- Playlist first line is exact; file order and paths are correct.
- All files are accessible for the full run and have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases.
- Durations, audio/video sync, levels, aspect ratio, and loop transition have been checked in a rehearsal.
- Output resolution and frame rate suit the source and encoder; bitrate leaves upload headroom.
- Keyframe interval is two seconds where possible and does not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Correct RTMPS URL and stream key are set, and the key is not exposed.
- Live Control Room preview and stream health are checked before and during the broadcast.
- A plan exists if the intended continuous event exceeds YouTube’s stated 12-hour automatic-archive threshold.
Troubleshooting
FFmpeg rejects the playlist or cannot open a file
Check that the first line is exact and the file has no byte-order mark or preceding text. Verify spelling, working directory, quoting, and permissions. If a path is absolute or otherwise rejected by safe-path checks, prefer a safe relative path; use -safe 0 only for trusted local playlist contents.
Playback breaks or artifacts appear at sermon boundaries
Compare the files’ streams, codecs, time bases, audio layouts, and duration metadata. Correct inaccurate or truncated sources, normalize the files before concatenation, or use a filter-based concat workflow when the inputs need re-encoding and alignment.

The loop does not begin or does not repeat
Confirm that -stream_loop -1 precedes -i sermon-playlist.ffconcat, and that the intended playlist is the input. Rehearse a complete cycle, including the last-to-first transition.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm FFmpeg is still running, and inspect its error output and YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
Video stutters or the computer struggles
The selected bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, another device may be using bandwidth, or encoding may exceed the machine’s capacity. Reduce output resolution or bitrate to a sustainable level, leave the recommended upload headroom, and verify encoder performance in a rehearsal.
Audio is missing or inconsistent
Check that every source has a compatible audio stream and layout and that the AAC encoder is available. A sermon without audio or with a different layout can violate concat-demuxer assumptions; normalize it or use a workflow that explicitly handles the difference.
