You can loop a prerecorded 1080p video on YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add the file as a looping media source, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, and use a hardware H.264 encoder if your PC supports one. Start with 1080p30, 5 Mbps CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. The PC must stay on and connected while OBS streams; if that is not practical, a cloud service can run the loop instead.
Can you stream a prerecorded video on YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube Live can receive an encoder-based stream from OBS, which can send a video file as a live broadcast. A loop repeats the file rather than making the broadcast a camera feed. You remain responsible for having the rights to the video and audio and for following YouTube’s live-streaming rules.
If this is the channel’s first livestream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the time you plan to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the encoder workflow.

YouTube channel eligibility
- The channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance sets 16 as the minimum age to livestream.
- Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live activation.

Low-power PC and upload connection
A hardware encoder can reduce CPU workload, but whether it can sustain a particular 1080p stream depends on the PC’s graphics hardware, generation, drivers, and overall stability. OBS supports Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, and AMD AMF on compatible hardware. Older hardware encoders may produce lower quality at a given bitrate, so test the actual machine rather than assuming that hardware encoding guarantees success. OBS explains hardware encoding options and trade-offs.
Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate. For a 5 Mbps stream, that means having at least 6 Mbps of stable upload capacity available to the stream; other devices and network activity can reduce what is actually available. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and stream health.

Recommended OBS settings for a 1080p YouTube Live loop

These are YouTube’s live-streaming recommendations, not its separate recommendations for uploading a video file. YouTube transcodes live streams into playback formats for viewers. Test with representative movement and audio: a static picture may not reveal problems that appear during busier scenes. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.
Set up the looping broadcast in OBS
- Prepare the source file. Keep the prerecorded video accessible on the PC for the full broadcast. Confirm that it plays correctly and that its audio is present if you expect audio in the stream.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder-based stream. Copy the stream key and keep it private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube or its RTMPS service/preset if available, then enter the stream key. OBS labels can vary by version, so verify the current labels in your installed release. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported.
- Create a scene and add the video. In OBS, add the prerecorded file as a media source in the scene you will stream. Enable the source’s loop behavior. The exact wording and location of the loop control can vary by OBS version; confirm it in your installed version and test that playback restarts at the end.
- Check audio. If the video contains audio, watch the OBS audio mixer while it plays and confirm that the source is registering. Listen to the preview to catch silence, clipping, or unwanted audio before going live.
- Set video and output. Configure the stream for 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps to begin. Set H.264, CBR, 5 Mbps, and a two-second keyframe interval. If the source and PC justify 60 fps, use YouTube’s 6 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 1080p60 and verify the system remains stable.
- Select a supported hardware encoder if available. Choose Quick Sync, NVENC, or AMF only if the PC and its drivers support it. Compare output quality and stability in a test; if it performs poorly or is unavailable, reassess whether the machine can encode the broadcast reliably.
- Preview and test before relying on the loop. Start the encoder feed and check the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room. Test with the same kind of movement and audio as the actual video, verify the loop restarts, and confirm that the broadcast is accessible before leaving it unattended.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for a looping stream
Use video and audio that you own or are licensed to livestream. A file being prerecorded, or being played in a loop, does not itself grant permission to broadcast its contents. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and check the channel’s live-stream eligibility before starting a long-running stream. Also consider whether the content offers enough original value for your channel’s goals; the setup steps cannot guarantee monetization or a particular platform decision.

Why a low-power PC may fail, and how to troubleshoot it
