In OBS Studio, add the aquarium video as a local Media Source, turn on Loop, and send the scene to YouTube Live using an encoder configured for 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps. For YouTube’s H.264 ingest, its current recommended bitrate for 4K60 is 35 Mbps; use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. The Loop setting repeats a file, but it does not guarantee a gap-free boundary for every file and setup—check the edit and watch a real YouTube test across the loop point.

Set up a continuous loop in OBS

  1. Add the aquarium footage. In your OBS scene, add a Media Source and select the local video file. OBS lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM among its supported formats. Confirm that the file plays from beginning to end before streaming. OBS: Media Sources.
  2. Enable the file loop. Open the Media Source properties and select Loop. Keep the source visible in the scene. Avoid scene changes or toggling the source’s visibility at the end of playback; neither is needed for the file to repeat.
  3. Check the footage’s edit point. The last image and movement should lead naturally into the first frame. Loop repeats the file; it cannot correct a discontinuity already present in the video.
  4. For multiple clips, use a playlist. Add OBS’s VLC Video source, create the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source to appear. Review transitions between each adjacent clip and the transition from the last clip back to the first. OBS: Media Sources.

OBS documents repetition at the end of a file, not a frame-perfect, black-gap-free transition across every codec, drive, computer, and OBS build. Treat seamless playback as something to validate on your exact setup.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, start a live stream using the encoder workflow and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for it.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom service, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the corresponding fields. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. Set up the scene with the aquarium source framed to fill the output. In OBS, open Settings → Video and set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and the frame rate to 60 fps. Check that your file, graphics, encoder, and computer can sustain that output.
  4. In Settings → Output, configure the streaming encoder and bitrate. YouTube lists OBS among verified encoder options and supports encoder-based productions combining media and other sources. Follow the codec-specific guidance below rather than applying an H.264 bitrate to a different codec. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.
  5. Start the OBS stream, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health status before making the stream public. YouTube recommends testing the setup and matching stream quality to the reliability of the upload connection. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Encoder settings for a 4K60 YouTube stream

These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. The 35 Mbps figure applies to H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps; YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265.

Setting Recommended configuration What to check
Resolution and frame rate 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps Confirm OBS is outputting the intended resolution and frame rate—not only that the source file has them.
Codec and bitrate H.264: 35 Mbps for 4K60 Use the bitrate guidance for the codec you actually selected. YouTube’s AV1 and H.265 ranges differ.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate) Choose CBR in the encoder settings when available.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds if it is expressed in seconds. Some encoders express it as frames; at 60 fps, 2 seconds corresponds to 120 frames.
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS Use RTMPS where the encoder workflow supports it.

These are ingest settings, not a promise that every viewer will receive 4K60. YouTube transcodes live ingest into viewing formats for different devices and network conditions. Its guidance also says low-latency optimization is unavailable at 4K/2160, so expect normal latency rather than the lower delay available at some other resolutions. YouTube encoder settings.

Test the loop point on the actual YouTube stream

  1. Make a private or unlisted test stream before scheduling a public broadcast.
  2. Let the file play all the way through at least once. Watch the YouTube player across the end-to-start transition; an OBS preview alone does not show every issue in the full streaming path.
  3. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, and watch OBS for dropped frames. If the stream stutters, test whether the encoder is overloaded or the upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
  4. Repeat the test after changing the file, encoder settings, OBS version, or playback hardware. A change to any part of the chain can affect the boundary.
  • Use a stable wired connection if practical. Check available upload speed against the chosen bitrate and allow reasonable headroom; YouTube recommends testing upload speed but does not prescribe a universal headroom multiplier.
  • Confirm the source file is stored somewhere the computer can read continuously and that it plays correctly from start to finish.
  • For extended broadcasts, account for reliability of the computer, encoder, network, and storage. The cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Latency, DVR, and what viewers can control

At 4K, YouTube uses normal latency because its low-latency optimization option is not available for 4K/2160. That is generally compatible with a mostly static aquarium scene, but viewers should not expect real-time interaction.

DVR is a separate live-stream setting: when enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume. YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams beyond 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. DVR does not change how OBS repeats the video. YouTube: Turn on DVR on live streams and YouTube: Manage live stream settings.
