Use ordinary logging for ongoing operations and a more detailed report when diagnosing a fault. Then check YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room: a running FFmpeg process and clean-looking local logs do not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Where FFmpeg writes its output
FFmpeg writes diagnostic messages to standard error (stderr) by default. Its progress display is also enabled by default: -stats reports encoding progress at info level. These messages can be useful for spotting input, encoding, or connection errors, but they are only the VPS-side view of the stream.
For a long-running process, arrange for the service or supervisor running FFmpeg to retain stderr, or redirect it to a file whose access, rotation, and retention you manage. Verify the destination after deployment and again after a restart. The correct retrieval and persistence commands depend on your VPS distribution and service manager; there is no universal systemd or journald command that applies to every host.
Choose a logging method

Save a detailed diagnostic report
Use -report when you need a detailed record to investigate a problem. It creates a timestamped report in the current directory and turns on debug verbosity.

ffmpeg -report -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'This is an illustrative command, not a complete stream configuration: replace the input, encoding options, and destination with your actual values. Ensure the working directory is writable and has suitable access controls. Debug reports can grow noisier than routine logs, so use an appropriate retention policy rather than assuming the file will manage itself.
Set a report filename and verbosity
To choose a report filename and level, set FFREPORT in the environment for the FFmpeg process. The FFmpeg manual documents level 32 as the numeric alias for info.

FFREPORT='file=ffreport.log:level=32' ffmpeg -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'The report parser uses colon-separated key/value options. Escape special characters and delimiters in values as specified in the FFmpeg command-line documentation. This example uses a fixed filename; configure rotation or another retention approach for your host, and confirm that the intended report appears after starting FFmpeg.
Keep routine logs readable and useful
FFmpeg supports log levels from quiet through panic, fatal, error, warning, info, verbose, debug, and trace; info is the documented default. You can add level prefixes and timestamps to diagnostic lines, for example:

Leaving debug reporting on indefinitely can create unnecessarily large logs. For program-friendly progress data, FFmpeg also offers -progress URL; it emits structured progress information. Neither progress output nor diagnostic logs confirm that YouTube accepted or is distributing the stream. See the FFmpeg documentation for option details.
Check YouTube’s stream health separately
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health and its status messages while the broadcast is running. YouTube says those messages include specific errors and instructions. Compare them with the VPS-side FFmpeg logs to distinguish local input or encoding problems from ingest or stream-configuration problems. YouTube describes checking stream health and analytics in its stream metrics guidance and explains status messages in its stream health guidance.

Review the encoder configuration
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the exact protocol, codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing the connection and doing a preflight with representative audio and movement, then monitoring health messages while live. A successful FFmpeg connection alone is not a substitute for that destination-side check.

Protect the stream key
YouTube’s stream URL and key are entered in the encoder to direct and authorize the feed. Treat the key as a secret: avoid including it in public logs, screenshots, support requests, or shell history. If you share a command or report for troubleshooting, redact the key and any sensitive destination details. YouTube explains stream keys in its live stream settings guidance.
Do not assume a 24-hour stream will be archived as one recording
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived under the same condition. Plan your recording and archive needs accordingly; see YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

- No report file appears: check the FFmpeg process’s current working directory and write permissions. For
FFREPORT, verify the environment reaches the process and inspect the filename and level syntax; configuration errors may not appear in the report. - Logs appear in a terminal but not after deployment: the service setup may not be retaining stderr. Configure capture in the actual supervisor or service manager and verify the destination after a restart.
- The report is too large or noisy:
-reportimplies debug verbosity. Use it for diagnosis rather than as an unexamined permanent logging policy, and set retention appropriate to your host. - FFmpeg looks healthy but YouTube reports a problem: check Live Control Room’s specific status message and compare it with the local log. Review ingest settings, bitrate for the selected codec and video mode, CBR, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity.
- A shared log exposes the stream key: remove or redact the key before sharing. Avoid pasting full command lines or reports into public channels.
