The tile should change to Portrait or Landscape, confirming the screen is locked in that position.
Lock the screen in portrait or landscape
- Swipe down from the top-right edge of the display to open Quick settings. If you do not see the rotation tile, swipe sideways through the panel to view more tiles.
- Check the tile label. Auto rotate means the screen follows the tablet’s position; Portrait and Landscape mean rotation is locked.
- For upright reading, enable Auto rotate if needed, hold the tablet upright, then tap Auto rotate. Confirm the tile changes to Portrait.
- For sideways video, enable Auto rotate if needed, hold the tablet sideways, then tap Auto rotate. Confirm the tile changes to Landscape.
Samsung’s US guide says the active Portrait and Landscape lock tiles appear gray, while Auto rotate appears blue or white when enabled. Tile appearance and Quick settings layout can vary by device and software version, so use the label shown on your tablet. Samsung’s screen-rotation instructions explain the documented workflow.
Change the lock or turn rotation back on
Tap Portrait or Landscape to return to Auto rotate. Turn the tablet to the orientation you want, then tap Auto rotate again to lock it there. Leave Auto rotate on if you want the display to follow the tablet as you move it.
If the rotation tile is missing or the screen will not rotate
Restore the Quick settings tile
Open Quick settings and tap Edit. Add the Auto rotate tile, then tap Done. If it is present but not on the first panel, swipe sideways through the tiles.

Check whether the app supports rotation
A system orientation setting cannot force every app to change direction. Samsung notes that some apps support only one orientation and remain in portrait or landscape regardless of how the tablet is held. If only one app stays fixed, check that app’s settings or support information before treating the behavior as a tablet problem. Samsung’s screen-rotation troubleshooting guide also describes this limitation.
Try Samsung’s basic troubleshooting
If rotation does not work across apps, Samsung recommends checking for software updates and restarting the tablet. If the problem persists, check for physical damage and seek appropriate service support.

Pause rotation temporarily while turning the tablet
Samsung documents a temporary method: leave Auto rotate on and keep a finger on the screen while turning the device. The display stays in its original orientation while your finger remains on the screen; release it to allow rotation. Samsung does not establish that this behaves identically on every model or software version.

Samsung’s US instructions say the Home screen rotation option described for phones is not available on tablets. Use the Quick settings orientation tile instead. Samsung’s Global Newsroom also described a Good Lock MultiStar feature called “Rotate with our best” for the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ running Android 11. That announcement is specific to those models and software; it is not evidence that the feature is available or suitable as a current fix on other tablets. Samsung Global Newsroom’s announcement provides that dated context.
