To livestream on YouTube, first confirm your channel is eligible, then choose mobile, webcam, encoder, or a supported console workflow. For a computer stream using an encoder, create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and key into your encoder, test the preview, and select Go live. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before the day of your event.
1. Check whether your channel can livestream
YouTube’s current general requirements say you must have a verified channel, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be at least 16 years old. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Start in YouTube Studio and follow the Live Control Room flow to check your account’s status. YouTube’s livestreaming overview has the current general eligibility guidance.
Mobile livestreaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no restrictions in the previous 90 days, livestreaming enabled, and a supported device. Meeting the general requirements does not necessarily make mobile streaming available. Check YouTube’s mobile livestreaming requirements for the account and device you plan to use.
2. Choose the streaming method that fits
| Method | Best fit | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A quick update or vlog from a phone or tablet | Requires at least 50 subscribers as well as the mobile account and device conditions above. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer broadcast using a camera | You need a computer with a webcam. YouTube presents this as a simple way to stream without setting up an encoder. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video equipment | Requires streaming software or hardware configured with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. |
| Console | Streaming directly from a supported modern console | Some consoles support direct streaming; controls and setup depend on the console, so follow the console maker’s instructions. |
There is no single best method for every broadcast. Use mobile for convenience if your channel meets its extra eligibility rules; use webcam for a simple camera-based computer stream; choose an encoder when you need control over screen or game capture, overlays, or external equipment. YouTube notes that beginners can start with equipment they already have; an additional webcam or microphone is optional if your current setup already meets the need.

- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)

3. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live to enter the Live Control Room.
- For an encoder broadcast, open the Stream tab to create a stream, or choose Manage to schedule one. A scheduled stream can have a shareable URL, and viewers may be able to set reminders.
- Set the title, audience, privacy, and other stream details before you start. Review the privacy setting rather than assuming it is public: YouTube documents private as the default for users aged 13–17 and public as the default for adults, and the setting can be changed.
- When scheduling, allow time to test the encoder and preview before the advertised start time.
For the encoder workflow and its current Live Control Room steps, see YouTube’s encoder livestream setup instructions.
4. Connect an encoder
- In the stream’s Live Control Room, locate and copy the stream URL (server URL) and stream key.
- Open your streaming encoder and paste each value into its matching field. The encoder sends your video feed to YouTube using these credentials.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not show it in a screen share or send it to someone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in the Live Control Room; update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the picture and sound are right before starting the public broadcast.
5. Test the stream before the event
YouTube recommends testing before the actual broadcast. Use an unlisted or public test stream, and, for an encoder event, start sending well ahead of time so there is room to fix problems before viewers arrive.

- Confirm the Live Control Room receives the encoder feed and displays a preview.
- Check that the stream page opens from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- Listen for clear, correctly routed audio and check the video framing and content.
- While live, keep an eye on audio and video quality rather than assuming the preview guarantees a trouble-free broadcast.
6. Go live, monitor, and end the stream
When the preview is ready and your stream details are set, select Go live in YouTube Studio for the encoder workflow. Continue monitoring audio and video during the broadcast. If you choose a lower-latency setting to make audience interaction feel more immediate, weigh that against YouTube’s warning that lower latency can increase playback buffering; for a presentation with little interaction, low latency may matter less.
When finished, select End Stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in the Studio Live tab; do not assume the same archive outcome for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.

7. Follow YouTube’s rules
Livestreams remain subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A stream that violates those rules may be removed or restricted. Use material you have the rights to broadcast and review YouTube’s current policies before using music, video clips, or other third-party content; account eligibility alone does not establish that a broadcast is permitted.
8. Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Problem | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Livestreaming is not available yet | First-time activation may still be processing, or the channel may not meet eligibility requirements. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check verification and any restrictions from the previous 90 days in YouTube Studio. |
| Mobile livestreaming is unavailable | The channel may have fewer than 50 subscribers or may not meet another mobile requirement. | Check the mobile requirements, including subscriber count, account status, and supported-device eligibility. Consider webcam or encoder streaming if those routes are available to your channel. |
| The Live Control Room does not show a preview | The encoder may not be sending a feed, or the URL or key may not match the stream. | Confirm the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied into the matching fields for the intended stream. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live. |
| The encoder cannot connect after a key was exposed or reset | The encoder may still be using an old or compromised key. | Have an authorized channel owner or manager reset the key in Live Control Room, then replace the key in the encoder. |
| Viewers experience buffering with an interactive stream | A lower-latency setting can increase playback buffering. | Consider whether faster interaction is worth the trade-off; choose a less aggressive latency setting if stable playback is more important. |
| No automatic archive appears | The stream may have lasted 12 hours or longer. | Check Studio’s Live tab, but note that YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. |
