To live stream a prerecorded video on YouTube, play the file through an encoder and send that encoder’s video and audio to a stream created in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s standard computer-encoder workflow is the flexible option; its encoder directory also lists the AJA HELO Plus as a specialized device that can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer.

Before you set up the stream

Check channel eligibility

YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions cover these requirements.

Clear rights to the whole program

Having a copy of a video does not automatically give you the rights to broadcast it. Check the rights for its footage, images, music, and other included material, including music licensing rights. YouTube’s livestream terms require that you have the necessary rights for Live Content on Google services worldwide and require compliance with its Community Guidelines and applicable laws: YouTube livestream terms. Copyright strikes or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast can lead to a live-stream restriction; see YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance.

How to stream a prerecorded video with a computer encoder

The encoder is the bridge between your media playback and YouTube Live. YouTube’s instructions explain how to connect an encoder using the stream URL and key, but the way you select or play a media file depends on the encoder software and its version. Confirm in that software’s current documentation that it supports a file as a source and any scheduling or looping you need.

  1. Prepare the channel. Verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance if this is its first broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room. Set a title, audience and visibility—public, private or unlisted—as appropriate. A scheduled stream can appear as an upcoming listing so viewers can opt in to a reminder. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and stream settings guidance.
  3. Set up the media source in your encoder. Choose an encoder that can play the prerecorded file as its source. Check its documentation for the correct file-playback workflow, supported formats, scheduling behavior and whether it can loop. These controls are not identical across encoders, so do not assume a particular menu path or unattended playback feature.
  4. Connect the encoder to YouTube. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. YouTube’s encoder connection instructions explain the connection.
  5. Start early and verify the incoming feed. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview, check picture and sound, and confirm the stream is accessible to the intended audience before starting the scheduled broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder preparation and monitoring tips.
  6. Monitor, then end the broadcast cleanly. Watch the stream while it runs, including audio and video. When the program is over, stop the encoder feed and end the stream in YouTube. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer broadcasts, do not assume that archive behavior applies.

Choosing between a computer encoder and dedicated hardware

A computer encoder is the ordinary flexible route: it avoids buying specialized hardware, but the computer and playback workflow must remain available for the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a dedicated option whose PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a specialized alternative, not a requirement for using prerecorded video. YouTube documents the capability, but availability, package contents and pricing are not established here. Compare the current options in YouTube’s encoder directory and setup page.
