To live stream from your phone, open the YouTube app, tap Create → Live, set up the stream, and tap Go live. Your channel must meet YouTube’s mobile-live eligibility rules: at least 50 subscribers, verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

Check that your channel and phone are eligible

YouTube’s mobile-live requirements, as currently stated in YouTube Help (publication year not shown), are:

  • Your channel has at least 50 subscribers.
  • Your channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • Live streaming is enabled. The first activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • Your device runs Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to livestream under YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance.

Having a YouTube account by itself does not guarantee mobile live access. YouTube’s mobile eligibility page is the relevant source for these mobile-specific rules; its general live-streaming page supplies the age minimum.

Start a live stream in the YouTube app

  1. Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet and sign in to the channel you intend to use.
  2. Tap Create, then Live.
  3. Tap Edit and enter the stream details. Review the title, visibility, audience settings, live chat, age restriction, monetization, and any other options shown for your account.
  4. Choose whether to start now or schedule the stream for later.
  5. When the setup is ready, tap Go live.
  6. When you are finished, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive that you can later make private or delete.

To start a scheduled stream, return to Create → Live, tap the calendar, select the scheduled stream, and tap Go live. YouTube says a private practice mode is rolling out to creators; look for it in the app, but do not assume it is available on every account.

Set privacy and audience deliberately

Check the visibility and audience settings before you start rather than relying on defaults. YouTube says its default mobile privacy setting is unlisted for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older, although creators can change the setting. The general minimum age for livestreaming is 16, so these default descriptions do not remove the need to follow YouTube’s age rules.

Channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a limit on the number of viewers for mobile streams, and their stream archives are set to private by default. YouTube says these policy changes can take weeks to reflect. At 1,000 subscribers, removing the mobile audience limitation can also take several weeks; YouTube does not give a fixed removal date. A channel that falls below 50 subscribers loses access to mobile live streaming.

Choose vertical or horizontal for this stream

Choose orientation based on how viewers will watch and which features matter. A vertical stream fills a phone screen and may be discovered in the Shorts feed. YouTube’s comparison lists memberships for both orientations, while clickable links in chat or the channel description and live ad pre-rolls and midrolls are available in horizontal live but not in the vertical live feed.

If the stream is primarily a phone-first vlog or quick update for viewers browsing on mobile, vertical may fit. If clickable links or horizontal viewing are central, consider horizontal instead. YouTube documents dual-format streaming through Live Control Room/Studio; the simple direct mobile-app workflow should not be assumed to produce both formats. In the documented Live Control Room workflow, vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.

What you need—and what is optional

The phone and YouTube app are the core setup for this method. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do,” and recommends trying a test live stream to get comfortable with the steps.

  • Optional phone holder or tripod: useful if you want hands-free, stationary framing. Check that the holder fits your phone.
  • Optional external microphone: consider one if you need a different audio-capture setup; confirm that it is compatible with your phone and connector.

Neither accessory is part of YouTube’s mobile eligibility checklist. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a required upload speed, battery capacity, or mobile-data allowance, so plan those around your own connection and stream duration rather than treating an unsupported number as a YouTube requirement.

If you need a different YouTube streaming setup

YouTube positions mobile streaming for vlogging and quick updates. Its other paths serve different needs: webcam streaming is a quick computer option, while an encoder is suited to gameplay, overlays, or additional hardware such as cameras, microphones, and preamps. Choose those paths when you need their added production control; for direct phone streaming, the app’s Create → Live workflow is the simpler route.

The stream starts but has fewer viewers than expected

If your channel has more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may be limiting the audience for mobile streams. Reaching 1,000 subscribers does not necessarily remove the limit immediately; YouTube says the change can take several weeks.

The archive is private

Check the archive’s privacy setting and your subscriber band. Mobile archives for channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers are private by default. You can change the archive’s privacy later.

You cannot add vertical format after starting

YouTube’s documented Live Control Room workflow does not allow adding vertical format once a stream has started. Choose the format before going live; do not count on changing an existing stream mid-broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
