To live stream from your phone, enable live streaming on an eligible YouTube channel, open the YouTube app, and tap Create > Live. Set the title, audience and visibility, then tap Go live. Before starting, check your channel’s eligibility, choose portrait or landscape, charge your phone, reduce interruptions and test your setup privately or with an unlisted stream.

1. Check that your channel can go live from mobile

YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements include all of the following:

  • At least 50 subscribers.
  • A verified channel.
  • Live streaming enabled on the channel.
  • No live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
  • A supported phone: Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later, according to YouTube’s mobile help guidance.
  • The person streaming must be at least 16, under YouTube’s general live-stream eligibility rules.

If you have just enabled live streaming, YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours before you can start your first stream. Enable it well ahead of an event rather than waiting until you are ready to broadcast. YouTube’s current guidance also says channels with 50–999 subscribers may have a viewer limit and that their live archives default to private. Once a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removing the audience limitation may take several weeks. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and mobile-streaming instructions for current account-specific details.

A restriction on one channel is not something to work around by switching channels. Resolve the restriction through YouTube’s account guidance before planning a live broadcast.

2. Set up the stream and check who can see it

  1. Open the YouTube app and sign in to the channel that will host the stream.
  2. Tap Create, then Live.
  3. Enter a clear title and any other stream details YouTube presents, including audience and visibility settings.
  4. Choose whether to start now or schedule the stream for later. If scheduling, confirm the date, time and visibility before sharing its link.
  5. Review the preview and settings, then tap Go live when ready.
  6. When you finish, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive; you can change its visibility or delete it afterward.

For a rehearsal, use Practice Mode if it is available on your account. YouTube describes the feature as rolling out, so do not assume every creator will see it. An unlisted test is another way to check framing, sound and connection before a public event. Verify the visibility setting before inviting viewers: an unlisted stream is accessible to people with its link, while a public stream can be discovered more broadly.

For guidance on the mobile app flow and archive, see YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream on mobile.

3. Choose portrait or landscape before you start

Decide how viewers should see the scene before going live. Portrait is a 9:16 phone-first composition; landscape is a wider 16:9 view that may suit a scene designed for computers or TVs. A vertical stream can appear full-screen in YouTube’s mobile vertical live experience and may be encountered while people browse Shorts. That can be useful when the subject is naturally framed tall, but it is not a guarantee of discovery or audience size.

On a phone, set the device’s orientation deliberately and turn on rotation lock so a small movement does not change the framing. YouTube says a vertical stream cannot be added after a stream has started. Its dual horizontal-and-vertical workflow, with layouts such as center crop, fit to phone width or stacked, is managed in Live Control Room; it is separate from simply choosing the phone’s orientation in the YouTube app.

Pick the camera that suits the job

The rear camera generally gives better visuals, while the front camera makes it easier to see yourself and follow chat. If you have a second device, use the phone’s rear camera to film and the other device to monitor chat. Keep the camera stable and frame the subject before the broadcast begins.

YouTube explains vertical viewing and its separate dual-format workflow in Get started with live streaming; its mobile filming tips cover camera and orientation choices.

4. Prepare your phone, battery and connection

  • Charge before you begin. YouTube estimates that “1% phone battery is used per 1 minute of stream,” but actual drain depends on the phone and conditions. For a long broadcast, start with a full charge or use a suitable power bank.
  • Reduce interruptions. Turn on Do Not Disturb and check that alarms, calls or app notifications will not disrupt the stream.
  • Test the connection where you will film. A connection that works for browsing may still be unstable during a live broadcast. Test from the same location and network, and move closer to a reliable access point or choose another connection if the rehearsal drops or stalls.
  • Check orientation lock. Lock the phone in the portrait or landscape position you chose.
  • Keep the phone cool and steady. Avoid direct, harsh sun and position the phone securely so it does not shift during the stream.

The battery figure is YouTube’s estimate, not a universal measurement for every device. YouTube recommends considering battery packs for longer sessions. Its mobile live filming guidance also covers Do Not Disturb and connection preparation.

5. Improve light and sound with simple placement

Use soft, even light

Face a window or use a shaded, even light source where possible. Avoid harsh direct sun and strong light behind you, which can leave your face too dark. Make a short test recording or rehearsal and check how the image looks on another screen.

Keep speech clear

Speak close enough to the phone for its microphone to pick you up, and do not cover the mic with your hand, case or mount. In a loud environment, YouTube suggests considering an external microphone. Check that any microphone is compatible with your specific phone and connector before relying on it; an accessory is optional, not a prerequisite for going live.

YouTube’s advice is that “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” See its mobile filming tips for lighting and audio guidance.

6. Promote the stream and make a useful highlight

If viewers need time to plan, schedule the stream and share its link in advance. YouTube recommends promoting a live stream at least 48 hours before it begins. Make sure the link points to the intended stream and that its visibility allows the people you invite to watch.

After a stream, an eligible mobile broadcast may offer a way to create a Short highlight. YouTube’s stated criteria include a vertical stream made with the YouTube mobile app, a duration of 10 minutes to 12 hours, chat enabled, no screencast, a stream that is not marked Made for Kids, and compliance with safety standards. The option depends on the account and stream, so check whether it appears rather than assuming every broadcast can be clipped this way. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance.

Troubleshoot common phone-stream problems

Problem Likely cause What to check or do
The Live option is missing or the stream will not start The channel may not meet mobile eligibility requirements, live streaming may not be enabled, or initial activation may still be processing. Check subscriber count, channel verification, live-stream status and restrictions. If you just enabled streaming, allow up to 24 hours for the first activation.
Few or no viewers can watch The stream may be unlisted or private, or an audience limit may apply. Review visibility and audience settings before sharing the link. Channels with 50–999 subscribers may face a viewer limit under YouTube’s current mobile rules.
The picture is sideways or framed poorly Orientation was not chosen or locked before going live. End the stream if necessary, set portrait or landscape and enable rotation lock before starting again. YouTube says vertical cannot be added after a stream has started.
The stream drops or looks unstable The connection may be unreliable at the filming location. Run a rehearsal from the same spot, check the network, and use a more reliable connection or location if the test stalls.
The phone runs low on battery Live streaming consumes power, with drain varying by device and conditions. Start charged and use a compatible power bank for a longer session.
Viewers cannot hear speech clearly The phone microphone may be covered, the speaker may be too far away, or the environment may be noisy. Uncover the mic, move closer to the phone and reduce background noise. Consider a compatible external microphone if the setting is loud.
