To live stream on YouTube, first enable live streaming for an eligible channel, then choose a method—mobile, webcam, encoder, or console—set up the stream, test it, and go live. For a computer-based production, YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room connects your encoder to YouTube using a server URL and stream key.

Check whether your channel can go live

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says creators must be at least 16, verify their channel, and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. A first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Mobile streaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and an Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ device. YouTube says channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have mobile viewer limits, and their archives may be private by default. These mobile-specific thresholds do not apply universally to webcam, encoder, or console streaming. Details are in YouTube’s mobile live-streaming guidance (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Choose the streaming method

Method Best fit What to expect
Mobile On-location streams and quick updates Create or schedule a stream in the YouTube mobile app. Mobile eligibility requirements apply.
Webcam A straightforward stream from a computer with a webcam YouTube describes webcam streaming as a quick way to stream from a computer.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, multiple inputs, or external audio/video equipment An encoder—software or hardware—sends your production to YouTube. You configure it with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
Console Streaming gameplay directly from a modern console YouTube supports direct streaming from modern consoles; follow the relevant console maker’s instructions for its controls.

The distinctions above follow YouTube’s descriptions of its available streaming methods, not comparative performance tests. Choose based on the device you have, whether you need screen sharing or gameplay, the number of inputs, and how much production setup you want to manage.

Set up the stream page and schedule it

Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. To schedule a future stream, open the Manage tab and create a scheduled stream.
  2. Enter the title and description, and review the audience and privacy settings. Do not assume a stream is public by default: YouTube says default privacy settings differ depending on age.
  3. If promotion matters, schedule ahead. A scheduled stream can have a shareable page, and viewers can set reminders.

For current interface guidance, see YouTube’s instructions for creating and managing live streams and its live-stream settings guidance (accessed October 3, 2026; publication dates not displayed).

Connect an encoder

  1. In the Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the server URL and stream key.
  2. Enter both values in your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen, share it publicly, or include it in a public recording.
  3. Start sending the encoder feed to YouTube. Wait for the preview to appear in the Live Control Room, then check that the picture and sound are right before selecting Go live.

Test your setup before the event

YouTube recommends an unlisted test stream so you can check how the audio and video look and sound before broadcasting to your intended audience. Use a quiet location, frame the shot, plan the segments, and check the network. For computer streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet and says to check outbound capacity against the stream bitrate. Its guidance gives about 10 MB of mobile data per minute as a rule of thumb; actual use depends on the stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

  • Listen for clear speech, background noise, and audio that is too quiet or distorted.
  • Check framing, lighting, and whether the encoder preview shows the intended picture.
  • Confirm that the stream is unlisted during a private rehearsal and that the intended event has the right privacy setting.
  • A tripod or similar accessory can reduce camera shake; a microphone can improve audio. YouTube presents these as suggestions, not prerequisites, and says expensive equipment is not required to get started.

Live broadcasts do not offer the multiple takes available when filming a video, so rehearse transitions and any screen or scene changes you plan to make. YouTube’s filming tips for live streams include this distinction.

Go live, monitor, and end the stream

Start the broadcast

For an encoder stream, start the encoder feed, wait for and inspect the Live Control Room preview, then select Go live. With mobile or webcam streaming, follow the prompts in the relevant YouTube app or Studio flow and check the final title, audience, and privacy settings before confirming.

When the event is over, end the stream in the Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; find them in the Live section of YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s guidance for managing live streams (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Follow YouTube’s rules and protect your stream

Only broadcast material you have the right to use, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube lists a copyright strike during an active live stream and matching another copyrighted live broadcast among possible causes of live-streaming restrictions. If your channel is restricted, do not try to bypass the restriction by streaming from another channel. Read YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Troubleshoot common problems

  • You cannot enable live streaming: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a live-streaming restriction occurred in the previous 90 days. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
  • The mobile app does not offer live streaming: Check the mobile-specific subscriber and device requirements, as well as channel verification and restrictions. YouTube says a private Live Practice Mode is rolling out to creators, so it may not be available on every channel.
  • The encoder preview does not appear: Confirm the encoder is sending to the server URL shown for this stream and that the matching stream key is entered correctly. Keep the key private. Wait for the Live Control Room preview before selecting Go live.
  • The stream looks or sounds wrong: Run an unlisted test, check the camera framing and microphone, and confirm the encoder’s output is reaching the preview. Check network capacity against the selected bitrate; YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streams.
  • Viewers cannot access the stream: Recheck the stream’s privacy setting and audience details in YouTube Studio. A scheduled stream may not be public unless its settings make it so.
  • YouTube blocks or restricts a broadcast: Review copyright and policy compliance, including whether the live stream contains material you do not have permission to use. Do not use another channel to evade a restriction.

Or let it run in the cloud
