To live stream music on YouTube, enable live streaming for your channel, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, connect your streaming method, and check the preview before going live. Rehearse the complete audio and video setup and make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. Separately, secure the music permissions needed for the planned performance, recording, use, and territories: a technically successful setup does not clear music rights.
Choose a YouTube streaming method
YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. Choose based on the event’s inputs and production needs; music-rights requirements do not become different just because you choose a different method.
| Method | When it fits | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A straightforward event that can be captured with a phone. | Consider whether the phone and its audio capture are suitable for the performance and location. YouTube’s cited pages do not establish specific device requirements here. |
| Webcam | A simple, fixed-camera stream from a computer. | Consider how you will get the music into the stream and whether the camera and audio setup meet the event’s needs. |
| Encoder | A more controlled production with external audio or video hardware, multiple microphones, cameras, or other inputs. | It adds setup steps, so leave time to connect and test the whole signal path. YouTube says an encoder can connect external audio and video hardware. |
You do not need expensive gear to begin. A microphone is optional: it may help in an encoder setup, but the right choice depends on the room, instrument, mixer, and production. No particular microphone model is established as best for this use.
Prepare the channel and create the stream
- Enable live streaming. If this is the channel’s first time streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that delay before scheduling an event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live. Create a stream or schedule it for the event.
- Copy the stream URL and key. For an encoder workflow, enter these into the corresponding streaming settings in your encoder. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the stream.
- Connect and configure your production gear. Route microphones, mixers, instruments, cameras, or other equipment through the encoder as your production requires. Check that the encoder is sending the intended audio and video.
- Wait for the Studio preview. Confirm that the correct feed appears in Live Control Room before starting the stream. Check framing, audio level, channel balance, and synchronization while the performance is quiet enough to diagnose problems.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Confirm the event page is reachable, watch stream health and messages, and listen for changes in the audio during the performance.
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Those are planning recommendations, not a guarantee against setup or connection failures. If you are recording locally as a backup, check the local file after the event rather than assuming it was saved correctly. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current Studio settings and your archive needs for the event. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips and the encoder setup page.
#1 Best Overall
- [XLR Mic Input] One XLR microphone input interface is set on the gaming audio mixer, which is great to up your audio quality with your XLR setup. The XLR mixer is a stepping stone to upgrade your live streaming. Audio mixer offered built-in 48V phantom power which opens up more choices for mics. Directly use it with your condenser microphone but do not solve added peripherals. (NOT available for USB mic)
- [Individual Channel Control] Gaming audio mixer for one mic recording with smooth volume slider fader take your streaming recording to a whole new level with full pleasure. Four independent channels set on the DJ mixer give audio volume of the MICROPHONE, LINE IN, HEADPHONE, and LINE OUT channels individual control. Configurable on the PC audio mixer instead of just operating on your game or streaming software.
- [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. Real-time feedback between speaking and hearing will not distract your attention, which encourage you to speak more confidently. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.
- [Sound Effects] The computer sound mixer supports four pre-recorded customized button that can be recorded and activated at the press of button to post production. 6 kinds of voice changing modes change your output style. 12 auto tune changes the tone of your voice. The podcast mixer being able to add different and fun effects is a huge bonus for your streaming or game voice.
- [Controllable Vibrant RGB] RGB button on the audio mixer DJ meets different live streaming themes. Lights on the video mixer is vibrant but not harsh on your eyes. Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
Set encoder quality and test the connection
Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain throughout the event, not merely at a moment when the network is quiet. YouTube recommends running a speed test, leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate, and accounting for other people or devices sharing the connection. Rehearse with sound and movement similar to the actual performance; a static, silent test may not reveal problems that appear during a full set.
For RTMP or RTMPS streams, YouTube’s encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. Use a compatible YouTube preset in your encoder where available, and verify the settings again before the event because platform recommendations can change. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
YouTube gives 2 Mbps as an example video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. Treat that as an example setting, not a promise that every connection, encoder, or performance will produce a good result at that rate. Choose a setting compatible with your connection and verify it in rehearsal. If you raise the video bitrate, include it in the total when checking bandwidth headroom.
Clear music rights separately from the technical setup
Before streaming, establish that you have the permissions needed for the particular music and the intended use in the territories where the stream will be available. Requirements can depend on the composition, recording, performance, use, and territories; the YouTube pages cited here do not determine what a particular performer or organizer must obtain under every jurisdiction.

YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say the provider represents and warrants that it has all necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. A performer’s permission to play a song, for example, should not be assumed to settle every permission relevant to a live stream or its recording. Check the rights for your actual repertoire and use; seek qualified advice for jurisdiction-specific questions.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. If it identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop streaming that content. If it remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption by itself. YouTube says creators who licensed third-party content should ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist; without that allowlisting, a stream may still be interrupted even when the creator has a license. Confirm the process with the rights owner well before the event.
Do not confuse this with YouTube’s live Content ID matching feature. The feature described by YouTube is for certain Content Manager partners to detect copies of their own live streams; it requires global rights and exclusive ownership of the stream content, and access is restricted. It does not grant other streamers permission to use music. See YouTube’s explanation of Content ID matching on live streams.

Rehearse, monitor, and protect the event
- Test the full route: instrument or microphone, mixer or interface if used, encoder, network, and Studio preview. A test that bypasses part of the actual setup cannot confirm that part works.
- Listen as well as watch: check for clipping, low or missing channels, unwanted room noise, and audio/video timing issues. Make adjustments before the audience arrives.
- Test at performance intensity: play representative passages and move as you expect to during the event. This helps expose network or audio issues that a static test can miss.
- Keep the connection predictable: leave the recommended bandwidth headroom and account for other devices using the same network.
- Monitor during the broadcast: watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages and keep listening for changes. YouTube’s recommendations do not guarantee that every stream or archive will work in every setup.
- Have a recovery plan: know who can check the encoder, audio path, and event page if something fails. If a rights warning appears, do not assume that restarting the encoder resolves the underlying rights issue.
Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see or hear | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| The channel cannot start a first live stream. | First-time activation may still be processing; YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours. | Enable live streaming well before the event rather than waiting until showtime. |
| The Studio preview does not show the intended feed. | Check that the encoder is connected and that the stream URL and key were entered in the correct fields. | Verify the encoder’s selected video and audio inputs, then reconnect and wait for the preview before going live. |
| The video drops frames or the stream becomes unstable. | The selected total bitrate may be too high for available upload bandwidth, or other network users may be consuming capacity. | Run a speed test, preserve 20% headroom over total bitrate, reduce the bitrate or quality if needed, and rehearse again. |
| The audio is missing, distorted, or imbalanced. | Inspect the selected input, cable or routing path, mixer/interface levels, encoder audio settings, and stereo configuration. | Test with representative music and listen in the Studio preview before the performance begins. |
| YouTube shows a copyright warning or interrupts the stream. | The live system may have identified third-party content. A license alone may not prevent matching-related interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. | Stop the identified content as YouTube directs and contact the rights owner about the required permissions and Content ID allowlisting. Do not treat a technical reconnect as rights clearance. |
| You expect an archive but cannot find or rely on it. | Confirm current Studio settings and event duration; YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance is not a guarantee for every setup. | For an important event, consider a local recording and inspect the saved file after the broadcast. |
