You can use AWS Elemental MediaLive to turn a prerecorded MP4 in Amazon S3 into a live-style HLS stream: MediaLive pulls the file, processes it, and sends output to a configured destination. An AWS walkthrough published July 27, 2021 demonstrates this with a MediaStore container and CloudFront. Its console labels and configuration are historical examples, so verify the current AWS console and service availability before following them literally.

How the prerecorded-video workflow works

The AWS walkthrough separates the job into storage, processing, and delivery:

  • Amazon S3: stores the source MP4.
  • MediaLive: reads the file through an MP4 pull input and processes it as a channel input.
  • HLS destination: receives the channel output. In the walkthrough, this is an AWS Elemental MediaStore container; CloudFront is shown as part of the delivery architecture. Social-channel output is also presented as an option.

This is a live-style broadcast workflow, not simply a link to play the file on demand. Viewers receive a stream when the channel is running. The walkthrough’s specific MediaStore path is an AWS-authored example, not a guarantee that every destination or console option remains available in the same form today.

What you need before configuring MediaLive

  • A prerecorded MP4 uploaded to an S3 bucket.
  • An IAM role for the MediaLive channel to access the required resources.
  • A destination and delivery path for the output. The cited example uses a MediaStore container and CloudFront.

The example’s MP4 pull-input URL follows this pattern: s3ssl://YOUR_INPUT_BUCKET_NAME/CONTENT_OBJECT_KEY.mp4. Replace the bucket and object-key portions with the actual S3 location. This is the syntax shown in the July 2021 walkthrough; confirm the current input requirements and console fields for your account and region.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Set up the live-style stream

  1. Upload the MP4 to S3. Create or choose an S3 bucket and upload the prerecorded video. Keep track of the bucket name and exact object key; the input URL must point to the object, not just the bucket.
  2. Prepare the output destination. The walkthrough creates a MediaStore container and a CloudFront distribution. Configure the destination according to the delivery method you intend to use. MediaStore and CloudFront are part of this example, not prerequisites for every possible MediaLive design.
  3. Create a MediaLive MP4 pull input. In the MediaLive console, create an input for the S3-hosted MP4 and supply its s3ssl:// object URL. Assign the IAM role and other access settings required by the current console. Exact labels and available options may have changed since the tutorial was published.
  4. Create a MediaLive channel. The 2021 example uses a Live Event–HLS template and a SINGLE_PIPELINE channel. Treat those as historical example choices rather than universal recommendations. Select a current channel configuration that fits your required output and availability needs.
  5. Configure the HLS output and destination. Set the channel’s HLS output group to send output to the prepared destination, using the current destination details and credentials or access configuration required by AWS. Check that the output path and destination agree before starting the channel.
  6. Attach the input and start the channel. Associate the MP4 pull input with the channel, review the configuration, and start the channel. Confirm that the destination receives the HLS output and that the intended playback path can access it.

The tutorial is a useful architecture example, but its 2021 console sequence should not be treated as a current click-by-click guarantee. AWS’s MediaLive User Guide describes upstream sources and downstream systems more broadly; the exact present-day settings for this prerecorded-file use case are not established here.

Decide whether you need a live stream or VOD

Use a live-style channel when viewers are meant to tune in to a broadcast at a particular time, or when you need a continuous linear stream. If viewers should instead choose when to start the video, an on-demand workflow may be simpler.

A separate AWS MediaPackage VOD workflow starts with file-based content in S3, uses a packaging group and configuration, then creates an asset with playback endpoints. AWS describes an asset resource as how MediaPackage ingests, packages, and serves VOD content. That is a different workflow from the MediaLive-to-MediaStore HLS example.

MediaPackage is not mandatory for the cited MediaStore setup. AWS also documents a live-to-VOD workflow in which MediaPackage ingests live HLS from an encoder such as MediaLive and extracts a VOD asset; AWS says MediaPackage is not required to deliver the resulting asset. MediaPackage v2’s documented HLS and CMAF live-ingest requirements apply to that service’s inputs, not to the MP4 pull input in the MediaLive example.

Plan for operating cost

The 2021 AWS walkthrough gives historical example figures of $1.63 per hour without its Twitch setup and $2.05 per hour with that setup. Those examples refer to the AWS Ireland Region and exclude view-based CloudFront data-transfer-out charges. They are not current AWS prices or a complete estimate. Your actual cost depends on the current regional rates and the channel runtime, origin or packaging services, and viewer delivery you use. Check current AWS pricing for the services and region in your design before launching.
