Link the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo account to the Activision account that already contains your Call of Duty progress. Then launch Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone with that same Activision account on every platform. Progression is stored on Activision, not on the console or PC account, so linking a platform to a different Activision account will not move your levels, Battle Pass progress, or unlocked content.

The linking process is free: open Activision account settings, choose Linked Accounts, select Link Account beside your provider, enter the verification code sent by email, and finish signing in on the provider’s website.

The account identity that controls carryover

Modern Warfare 4 requires an Activision login for online play. Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 In-Game Account Registration guidance, published August 20, 2026, says the requirement exists to support crossplay and cross-progression. Once you sign in, the Activision account becomes the identity associated with your game progress.

Activision’s Managing Your Activision Account guidance, published September 28, 2026, states that games with cross-progression store game progress on the Activision account rather than the platform account. That is why the exact account you use matters more than the device you are holding. A PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo login is a linked doorway to the Activision account; it is not a replacement for that account.

Before changing anything, identify the Activision account where your Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone levels, unlocks, Battle Pass progress, and purchases already appear. Use that account as the destination for every platform you want to connect.

Before you link: find the Activision account with your progress

Do not create a new Activision account simply because you are moving to another console or installing the PC version. Creating or using a second account can make an empty profile look like your progress disappeared, when the progress is still attached to the original account.

  • Use the email address associated with the account that shows your existing Call of Duty profile.
  • Make sure you can open that email inbox. Activision sends a one-time verification code for account changes.
  • If you have used more than one Activision email address, sign in to each candidate account separately and identify the one that contains the expected progression.
  • Record which platform accounts are already connected before adding another provider. Activision allows only one linked account per provider or manufacturer on an Activision account.

If you cannot access the correct email address or password, recover the Activision account first. Do not attempt to solve an access problem by linking the platform to a new Activision account; that creates the wrong account relationship and does not transfer progress.

How to link PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo

  1. Open Activision account management. Create a free Activision account only if you have never had one. Otherwise, sign in to the existing account that holds your Call of Duty progress. Use an inbox you can access because verification messages are part of the linking process.
  2. Go to Linked Accounts. The page lists supported providers, including PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Blizzard, and Nintendo. Activision may display the PC provider as Blizzard even though players commonly call the current launcher Battle.net.
  3. Select Link Account beside the provider. Choose the platform account you intend to use. Check the displayed identity carefully before approving it, especially if several console or PC profiles are available.
  4. Enter the email verification code. Activision sends a one-time code to the email address on the Activision account. Enter the code in the account-management prompt and continue.
  5. Finish authentication on the provider’s own site. Sign in to PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo when redirected, then approve the connection. The provider sign-in confirms which platform account is being linked; it does not change the Activision account that owns your progress.
  6. Launch the game and verify the identity. Start Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone on the newly linked platform. When prompted, use the same Activision account. Check that your expected level, operators, weapons, Battle Pass status, and other account content are present before spending currency or making additional account changes.

Repeat the process for each provider you use. The important pattern is one Activision account connected to the appropriate platform account on every device, not a separate Activision account for each platform.

Supported providers and linking limits

Platform or service What you do Important limit or note
PlayStation Choose Link Account next to PlayStation and authenticate with the intended PlayStation account. Only one account from that provider can be linked to the Activision account at a time.
Xbox Choose Link Account next to Xbox and complete Microsoft/Xbox authentication. Use the Xbox account associated with the original progress if you are moving between Xbox devices.
Steam Choose Link Account next to Steam and sign in on Steam’s authentication page. Steam is a platform login; progression remains attached to Activision.
Battle.net (listed by Activision as Blizzard) Choose the Blizzard entry, then authenticate with the Battle.net account you want connected. Check the Battle.net identity before approving the link if you have multiple PC accounts.
Nintendo Choose Link Account next to Nintendo and complete Nintendo authentication. Use the Nintendo account that should access the existing Activision profile.

Activision supports other providers that may appear in the Linked Accounts list. The available list and platform rules can change, so rely on the providers shown in your account rather than assuming every service is supported indefinitely.

What carries over to a linked platform

Game progression

Progression earned in a Call of Duty game that supports cross-progression is stored on the Activision account. With the same Activision account connected, your progression follows you to the linked platform instead of starting over. This includes the profile progress that the game associates with that account, subject to the game and platform support in effect when you play.

Modern Warfare 4 Battle Pass and unlocked content

Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 guidance says Battle Pass progress and unlocked content are available on all platforms when you use the same linked Activision account. That means a Battle Pass level earned on one supported platform can be reflected when you sign in on another linked platform.

Warzone progression and COD-Point purchases

Activision’s Warzone platform update says full Warzone progression and content purchased with COD Points carry to supported current-generation consoles and PC when the same linked account is used. A platform upgrade within the same console family is covered by the same-account rule: continue using the Activision account where the original progress or content was earned.

Supported generations and carryover behavior are platform policies, not guarantees for every historical version of the game. Confirm that the console or PC edition you are launching is among the platforms covered by Activision’s current Warzone guidance. The support excerpt for that Warzone update does not display a publication date, so check the current platform list if Activision changes the supported generations.

COD Points are different from progression

COD Points cause many apparent transfer problems because the currency and the items bought with it do not follow exactly the same rule.

Item or balance How it behaves What to check
Game levels and other progression Stored on the Activision account in a cross-progression game and available on linked platforms. Verify that every platform uses the original Activision account.
Battle Pass progress Available across platforms when the same linked Activision account is used for Modern Warfare 4. Sign in with the account that earned the progress.
Items purchased with COD Points Generally usable on linked platforms under the same account, including the Warzone content described in Activision’s platform guidance. Check that the platform and game are supported and that the item is tied to the Activision account.
COD Points balance COD Points bought or earned through Battle Pass progression are tied to the platform account for spending. Look for the balance on the platform where it was bought or earned; do not assume the number will be identical everywhere.
Some real-money purchases Some purchases made with real money remain tied to the platform where the transaction occurred. Review the purchase on the original platform before concluding that an item was lost.

In practical terms, an item bought with COD Points can be available when you move between linked platforms even though the COD-Point balance itself is not a shared wallet. A Battle Pass reward can therefore appear on another platform while the unspent currency used to buy a tier or item remains spendable only where the platform account holds it.

Moving between console generations

A console-family upgrade does not require a new Activision identity. For example, when Activision supports a current-generation version of Warzone and its predecessor platform within the same family, use the Activision account that held the original progress or content. Link the new console account to that Activision account and launch the supported version.

The same-account rule is decisive. Moving from one generation to another does not merge two different Activision profiles, and it does not turn platform-tied COD Points into a universal balance. If the new console opens an empty profile, stop before playing extensively or purchasing currency and check which Activision account is connected.

If you linked the wrong Activision account

Linking a PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo account to a different Activision account does not transfer the original progress. Activision’s account guidance says the progress and content are not deleted; they remain associated with the original Activision account. Relinking the platform to that original account restores access, provided the platform can be unlinked under Activision’s rules.

  1. Stop using the mistaken profile for purchases. Playing on the wrong account can make it harder to tell which profile owns new progress or currency.
  2. Identify the original Activision account. Sign in to the account that previously displayed your levels and content, or complete Activision’s recovery process if you lost access.
  3. Review the linked-account page. Confirm which Activision account currently lists the platform provider and which account should own it.
  4. Unlink only when necessary and permitted. Individual platform accounts may be unlinked once every 12 months. Activision can restrict unlinking for accounts under enforcement or when it detects suspicious activity.
  5. Link the platform to the original account. After the provider is eligible to be removed, use the normal verification and provider-authentication workflow on the correct Activision account.
  6. Recheck the game. Launch Modern Warfare 4 or Warzone and confirm the original progression and content before making purchases.

Do not repeatedly unlink and relink while troubleshooting. The 12-month interval means an experimental change can prevent another correction for a long time, and security restrictions may block the operation altogether.

Account recovery when the email or password is unavailable

If you cannot sign in because you lost the email address or password, use Activision’s account-recovery and email/password-change workflow before attempting to move a platform account. The platform login alone does not prove that a new Activision account should own the progress.

  • Recover access to the Activision account first.
  • Update the account email or password through the supported recovery process.
  • Confirm that verification messages arrive at the newly controlled email address.
  • Only then review Linked Accounts and correct the platform connection if needed.

If the account is under enforcement or Activision detects suspicious activity, unlinking may be restricted. In that situation, follow Activision’s account-support process rather than trying to bypass the restriction with another account.

Troubleshooting common carryover symptoms

The game starts at level one on the new platform

Check the Activision account shown during sign-in, not only the console or PC username. A fresh profile usually means the platform is connected to a different Activision account. Exit the game, sign in to the original Activision account, and verify the provider in Linked Accounts.

Battle Pass progress is missing

Battle Pass progress follows the same linked Activision account in Modern Warfare 4. Confirm that the account used on the new platform is the one that earned the progress. If the account is correct, verify that you are running the supported game version and that the platform connection completed successfully.

COD Points appear lower or unavailable

Check the platform where the COD Points were bought or earned through Battle Pass progression. The currency is tied to the platform account for spending, so a different balance on another linked platform does not by itself indicate lost progression. Content bought with COD Points can still be usable across linked platforms when the game and platform are supported.

A real-money purchase is not visible

Some real-money purchases remain tied to the platform where they were made. Recheck the original platform and the transaction history there before unlinking anything. Do not assume that every paid item uses the same carryover rule as COD-Point content.

The verification code never arrives

Confirm that you are checking the email address on the Activision account you intend to keep, including its spam or junk folders. If you cannot access that inbox, use account recovery instead of linking the platform to another account. A provider sign-in cannot substitute for Activision’s email verification step.

The unlink option is unavailable

An individual platform account can be unlinked only once every 12 months, and Activision may block unlinking for enforcement or suspicious-activity reasons. If either condition applies, do not keep submitting link attempts; resolve account access or contact Activision through its support process.

Account-security practices that prevent a bad link

  • Use a unique, controlled email address for the Activision account and keep access to it before changing platforms.
  • Read the provider name and account identity on the authentication page before approving a link.
  • Never share an Activision verification code with another person.
  • Keep a private record of which Activision account is connected to each platform.
  • Do not create a second Activision account to solve a missing-progress screen until you have checked the existing account.
  • Do not unlink merely to test whether another account contains your progress; the 12-month limit makes trial-and-error costly.

Account linking requires no special headset, controller, cleanup utility, streaming subscription, or other hardware or software. The documented prerequisites are an Activision login, access to its verification email, the platform account you want to connect, and the ability to authenticate with that provider.

Quick decision guide

Your situation Correct action Expected result
You are adding a new platform and know which Activision account has your progress. Sign in to that account, open Linked Accounts, and link the new provider. Supported progression and eligible content appear after launching with the same Activision account.
You created a new Activision account on the new platform. Stop, recover or sign in to the original account, then check whether the platform can be unlinked. The original progress remains on the original account; linking the new account does not merge it.
Your levels and Battle Pass carry over but COD Points do not. Check the platform where the COD Points were purchased or earned. This can be normal because the currency is platform-tied for spending.
Your COD-Point purchase is missing but the currency was spent on another platform. Confirm the same Activision account, supported game, and platform generation. Eligible COD-Point content is generally usable on linked platforms.
You cannot unlink the wrong platform account. Check the 12-month unlink interval and any security or enforcement restriction. You may need to wait or resolve the restriction through Activision support.

Bottom line

Use one Activision account as the home for your Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone progression, and connect every supported PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or Nintendo account to it. Linking the right account makes cross-progression work; linking a different account does not move anything. Battle Pass progress and eligible unlocked content can follow you, while COD-Point spending balances and some real-money purchases remain platform-specific. Because unlinking is limited to once every 12 months per platform account and can be security-restricted, verify the account identity before approving the link.
