To keep Steam from taking over a slow or shared connection, set a global download-speed limit at Steam > Settings > Downloads. For more control, change an individual game’s automatic-update behavior or restrict automatic updates to a time window. These controls work together: a speed cap limits Steam’s bandwidth use, while update settings control which games update and when.
Limit the speed of all Steam downloads and updates
- Open the Steam client and select Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Turn on Limit download speed.
- Enter a cap that leaves enough connection capacity for other people and activities in your household.
Steam’s download-rate guidance explains how to enable the limit. Check the unit shown in Steam before choosing a number: the client can display rates in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. A byte contains eight bits, so the same numerical value in bytes per second represents eight times the rate in bits per second.
The cap applies to both game downloads and updates. Steam also shows the limit in the download manager and in the update prompt that appears when you try to launch a game with an update pending, according to its download management guidance.
A cap restricts how much bandwidth Steam can use; it does not make your internet connection faster. Steam does not prescribe one ideal cap for every connection, so adjust it based on your connection and what else needs bandwidth.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Defer automatic updates for a specific game
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then open the Updates tab.
- Choose the option to update the game only when it is launched.
Steam’s game update settings guidance also lists keeping a game updated and giving it high priority. Choosing update-on-launch defers that game’s automatic updates; it does not avoid an update when you want to play, because launching the game requires its pending update.
Schedule automatic updates for later
To limit when automatic game updates run, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and set the time interval for automatic updates. The schedule uses local time. It is a timing control, not a block on every download: starting a download manually from the manager can make it run immediately, and launching a game can trigger its pending update. Steam describes these behaviors in its download management guidance.

Choose whether downloads continue while you play
By default, Steam pauses downloads when a game launches so the game’s network activity can take priority. To allow downloads during gameplay, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable the option to allow downloads while playing. If downloading affects online play, Steam recommends considering a bandwidth limit in the same settings. Its gameplay download guidance explains the default pause behavior.

| What you want to control | Setting | Scope and effect |
|---|---|---|
| Steam using too much bandwidth | Limit download speed in Steam > Settings > Downloads | Caps the rate for Steam downloads and updates. |
| One game updating automatically | That game’s Properties > Updates setting | Can defer its automatic update until launch; the update is then required to play. |
| Automatic updates starting at inconvenient times | Automatic-update time interval in Steam > Settings > Downloads | Restricts automatic update timing, but not a download started manually or an update required when launching a game. |
| Downloads competing with online play | Gameplay download option in Steam > Settings > Downloads, plus the speed limit if needed | Downloads pause by default when a game launches; enabling them allows downloads during play. |
Steam does not specify an exact client build or operating-system-specific wording for these instructions, so labels may vary slightly by client version or operating system.
