You can reduce what Meta AI can use by limiting who can see future Facebook and Instagram posts, avoiding sensitive disclosures in AI chats, and reviewing Meta’s privacy and account settings. These steps serve different purposes: they can restrict future sharing or adjust recommendations, but they are not all a general opt-out from AI training. Meta says public posts were used to train its generative AI models, while private posts and private messages were not—unless someone deliberately shares a message with an AI feature.
What Meta AI can use depends on where you shared the information

Limit who can see your Facebook and Instagram posts
For a new Facebook post, use the audience selector when you create it and choose the audience you intend, rather than leaving a post public by default. Meta’s Safety Center says users can choose who sees their posts and points to Privacy Checkup for reviewing privacy settings: Protect Your Information.
Review existing posts as well as the defaults for future sharing. Meta’s exact menu labels and paths can vary by app, account type, and region, so use the current in-app Privacy Center, Privacy Checkup, and audience controls instead of relying on a guessed sequence of buttons. Restricting a post now limits its visibility going forward; Meta’s sources do not say that this reverses the use of public content already included in model training.
Do not put information into an AI chat unless you are willing to share it with that feature
Meta distinguishes private messages between people from information deliberately shared with an AI feature. If you ask Meta AI to analyze a conversation, paste in a message, or provide a personal photo or detail, you have brought that material into an AI interaction. Avoid sharing sensitive information that you would not want used to improve Meta’s products or models.

Meta describes controls for deleting information shared in AI chats. Use the available deletion control for the relevant chat or information, but do not treat it as proof that content was removed from model training or every system derived from it; Meta’s cited explanation does not make that broader guarantee. EU adults have a stated objection process for certain AI training uses
In an announcement published April 14, 2025 and updated March 27, 2026, Meta said adults in the European Union could object to the use of their public content and AI interactions for training through an objection form linked in Meta’s notices. Meta said, “We’ll honor all objection forms we have already received, as well as newly submitted ones.” Find the form through the Privacy Center or the in-product notice; the announcement says the notices link to it. This stated route is specific to the EU context and should not be assumed available worldwide or for every account type.

Meta’s announcement described the scope as public posts and comments from adults on its products and AI interactions. It said public data from EU accounts belonging to people under 18 was excluded, and private messages were not used unless deliberately shared with AI. These are Meta’s stated practices, not a conclusion about legal compliance or a universal policy. Details are in Making AI Work Harder for Europeans.
Recommendation and ad controls are not a general training opt-out
Meta said that, from December 16, 2025, AI interactions would inform content and ad recommendations in most regions. Ads Preferences and feed controls can adjust recommendations, but Meta’s announcement describes them as recommendation controls—not as a general objection to using information for AI training. Use the settings for the purpose they are intended to change.

In that same announcement, Meta said it would not use sensitive topics such as religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, and trade union membership to show ads. Meta says AI responses may be personalized using information you have chosen to share, such as profile details and content you like or engage with. If Facebook and Instagram are connected through Accounts Center, Meta AI may use information from both for personalization. Check which accounts are linked and review the current privacy settings for each. This can help you make an informed choice about response personalization, but disconnecting accounts alone is not established as a way to stop training or eliminate all personalization.
